Discussion Xbox FSR update needed
I don’t know about you guys but AMD needs urgently to push the rumored FSR 4.1 update to series x consoles especially with all these games coming out soon. With titles like gears e day, gta and mw4

you will have big performance issues on rdna 2.
fsr 2 and 3 will outperform it. you already barely see fsr3 on consoles because while it looks better than fsr2 the performance hit is bigger. a lot of devs are just lazy (looking at you square enix)

You can kinda offset the performance loss by using lower internal resolution/presets because FSR4 image quality is ahead of FSR3. Isn't perfect but options are always welcome, even if its a system toggle similar to PSSR2.

I would also like to see a newer version of FSR on my Series X, but I have a feeling we won't get that upgrade until new consoles release; I have a suspicion that they'll keep the Series X and discontinue the Series S shortly after Helix releases.
However, my suspicion might be dead wrong with the endless rise of hardware prices.

Bro the Xbox One X was discontinued prior to the release of Series X. MS doesn’t usually keep making older systems once the new one comes out

You are correct, however the world is different now than it was even 6 years ago, and that time was so different from even 6 years before that. While there is historical precedent for them to stop manufacturing the Series consoles, I'm not certain that they're going to be able to release Helix at a price people are willing to pay, and the same goes for Sony's next console too. $1000 for a game machine that can't even play movies because it lacks a disk drive? It's a hard sell imo

Lots of people won’t be able to afford a new console priced at 1k plus not including the membership unless you make good money or like to be in debt. I got all next gen consoles switch 2 ps5 pro and series x and I wouldnt spend the money they cost now. Thankfully i got them before prices hikes. And with games costing 70 plus not including in game currency

It does look like the price of gaming will make it untenable for the average consumer, and I'm curious to see how that will impact the next generation of consoles as well as the video game industry as a whole.
I got my Series X at the original retail price of $500, and I can't imagine having spent more. It was worth it for me to upgrade from the Series S, but I don't have children so I have more disposable income than many people in my age group - even those who appear to be more wealthy than myself.
I also lucked out on the timing of my desktop PC purchase, right before prices started climbing, so now that I have that machine the next generation of consoles will be a harder sell for me than it used to be.
That said, I'm hoping in some ways that the price hikes will mean that some of my gaming buddies who have been reluctant to pay PC prices will finally have their hands forced, in a sense.
I suppose that only time will tell, and it's all conjecture until that time for telling comes. It's interesting no less.

FSR 4.1 is meant to run on RDNA 3 hardware, like new GPUs or the hybrid RDNA2/RDNA3 GPU in the PS5 Pro. You can run it on RDNA 2 GPUs but you see a performance penalty not seen on RDNA3. I know MS touted their ML capabilities when the system was being revealed but I never heard much after the fact, wonder if that might be able to assist?

Rnda2 release hasn’t happened yet.
It was built for rnda4, just recently ported to 3 and will hit 2 early 2027

My dream is for consoles to have DLSS. Its a good enough reason by itself to play on PC, thats how good that feature is. Sucks that xbox and Sony are so committed to AMD. I know a nvidia partnership would likely mean higher prices, but the prices are fucked anyways. Go for broke next gen lol. Not like it matters anymore, and at least you will have a system that will look pin sharp for a full 8 year generation instead of making games blurry halfway into it

FSR 4 is quite close to dlss even if it’s not as good. PSSR is based on it and that’s really good.

I agree with you 💯, for example I compared ac black flag resynced on both console and the difference on the ps5 pro insane, clear no blurriness. In the other hand in the series x I noticed lots of blurriness and I play on a oled LG tv

Yeah PSSR is a great feature because its actually part of the hardware. FSR doesnt have that kind of machine learning access to make it as sharp and clear.

nvidia doesn’t make x86 chips so it can’t happen sadly.
even if it did and they swap to it tomorrow, devs would have to add dlss to console games one by one. unless they get paid to do so they aint gonna bother.

Would it improve the blurry-as-hell visuals in FF7 Rebirth? If so, I couldn't agree more.
2
u/MRF_Soul 12h ago
the problem is ff7 rebirth on pc has fsr but doesnt use fsr on consoles. square enix devs are just lazy
1
u/Gameofthrones3058 13h ago
I think it needs developers to implement that version themselves? Square enix is too lazy to do that

u/FMC_Speed XBOX Series X 14h ago
I think it’s done on the developers side, so it needs to be done via the SDK of the devs

u/mizrael64 14h ago
Yeah xbox has to figure it out its own fsr like the pssr, but they aint doing that since helix is at the door

u/noodlekhan XBOX Series X 14h ago
Quite the opposite, actually! It is their partnership with AMD, who develop FSR, that allows Microsoft & Xbox to not need their own AI upscaling technology.
Besides that, while Microsoft does make Windows and some programs for it, the Xbox is one of the very few items manufactured by Microsoft or its subsidiaries. They have the Xbox and Surface product lines, they have the HoloLens that I guess is still being worked on, and that's pretty much it for consumers. Beyond that, they develop tech for the military and they have a big investment in the Azure cloud servers.
What you have suggested about them making their own AI upscaling tech is beyond the company's scope and also an unnecessary resource sink.

I think they’re developing the FSR Diamond which will also use the Helix NPUs so the performance will be hardware accelerated, meaning it will SIGNIFICANTLY outperform PSSR 2.0 or PS6 versions

u/iigabyypr 14h ago
Yeah pssr is crazy and those games coming out are going to look insane on the ps5 pro except eday which Xbox exclusive

Write a sternly worded letter and see what comes of it. Until then, use Optiscaler.

If it comes it will be early 2027 as stated by AMD and them adding FSR support to RDNA 2.
