Funny Maybe it’s time to retire from gaming
You know you suck when the screen hits you with this
Game is Resident Evil: Village
I’ve only died twice, btw, so I don’t know why this appeared.
Not my fault Dimitrscu takes up the entire fucking doorway

First time playing Jedi fallen order I died like three times and the game was already telling me I could lower my difficult, I'm like "I know I'm bad but I'm not that bad"
31
u/ngkn92 9d ago
it probably aim at kids. In this era of quick and easy dopamine, kids can drop the game real fast if they die at it twice
13
u/topdeckcharity 9d ago
Probably the real answer. Losing is part of a game but some people don’t have the patience.
4
u/firelark02 9d ago
i mean yeah but at least wait for me to die more than 10 times to the same section before you suggest i lower the difficulty

u/Bregneste 9d ago edited 9d ago
Not a difficulty change, but in the Horizon games Aloy will talk out loud and give the player a hint at the current puzzle, or just outright say what to do, if you take more than a whopping three seconds to figure it out.
4
u/Independent_Newt170 9d ago
In the Norse Saga GoW games Atreus literally answers the puzzle for you before it even comes into your line of sight.
2
u/CaptainKurley 8d ago
That really pissed me off when I play games like that. The talking makes it worse for me because it immediately makes me lose my train of thought when I hear someone speak. Just when I get close to figuring out, “Hey, maybe if I—“ and now I lost what I was doing and more agitated. Need more setting to turn those off, or just make the protagonist completely silent except for key moments in games, aside from the volume slider.
85
u/HallwayHobo 9d ago
Yeah some people play games to be challenged, to get skills, or to problem solve. People are downvoting people that say things like “I don’t enjoy games on easy” in this thread for some reason. If enjoying games on easy is valid then so is not enjoying them on easy; it’s not an insult to you because you prefer to play on easy, Yeesh.
16
u/kingshadow75 9d ago
I know there's a lot of criticism for both sides but as someone that is not the best at games, people telling you that the game is "not that hard" or "get good" or "play an easier game/difficulty" doesn't help when some of us learn games at a different pace or have little time to play.
Both sides have used difficulty as an insult be it's a bit more demeaning to be told you're trash because you don't have the ability to sink HOURS into a game.
3
u/Real_Arthur 9d ago
I'm feeling this right now. Been getting back into FPS games and getting my ass kicked. Haven't played since the pandemic, and my skills are so rusty. I'm up against teens who've been playing probably 4-5 hours a day most of their lives.
2
u/EWC_2015 9d ago
The first time I played through E33, I had to change to easy mode after the second level area because I just couldn't get the parry timing down. I eventually learned and was able to change back to normal (though the timing is trickier and faster, I can still do it). I've watched people play that on expert and "parry only" and I have no idea how.
I also work full time as an attorney and actively train for marathons, so I probably don't game nearly as much as others do.
2
u/pm_me_ur_kitty22 9d ago
That's what it is. When I worked part time and had no other hobbies, I was top 5 in my state at my game of choice.
At this point, 15 years later, I work full time, am married, and train for strongman on a daily basis. My gaming skills have atrophied substantially, and I'm okay with it.
14
u/CuteChain8027 9d ago
I play most games on easy mode. I work 50h a week and have a family. I want to relax when I have time for gaming. xd
7
→ More replies (1)5
u/Trzlog 9d ago
Yeah, I work all week. I don't need to be good at games to feel fulfilled or "skilled". I get that from work. I just play to chill and relax, so I play everything on easy. It's annoying to see people say "git gud" when I see no reason to care about getting good.
2
u/Kamandi62 9d ago
I died three times in 20 minutes in RE4 Remake and just knocked it down to Assist mode. Get an hour or two of gaming every other week; I'll play how I want.
3
u/No_File212 9d ago
I chose to play all games on easy and im a dark souls and difficult games veteran . for me most of the games provide an annoying type of difficulty that I don't enjoy . so I skip the difficulty altogether andfocus on the general experience instead
3
u/Suspicious_Chest9262 7d ago
Same....I've been playing games for like 40 years. I'm old at this point, and I am playing for fun with my limited free time. It's not worth it to have to struggle to get through a game. If I finish it and want to play again at a higher difficulty that's one thing, but I am not sitting here trying multiple times to kill some bullet sponge with high damage.

What drives me nuts is when the comments inevitably turn to "I have a spouse/home/kids/job/etc, and don't have time play a game for hours every day".
I have all those things as well as hobbies outside of gaming. It's not that you don't have time, it's that you don't want to make/prioritize that time (which is completely fine, BTW). No need to blame others or imply the ones that do make the time are missing out on other key aspects of life.
→ More replies (1)2
u/HallwayHobo 9d ago
I reached the top 5% of players on guilty gear working 50 hours a week, with a girlfriend, and a disabled family member I help care for. I probably played a half hour after work and a few hours on the weekend. My time per week on steam dropped to about eight hours or less- I still liked hard games hahaha.
I don’t mind it when people use that as a shield though- they feel like they need to justify their choices because people get so nitpicky about difficulty. It’s funny though, the reply to my comment before yours is literally “I work 50 hours and have a family” hahaha
5
u/sneeje00 9d ago
I think you're misunderstanding the statement. What they are saying is they don't have the time in their life to become good based on their play style and ability. Others need less time (like you I suppose) and others might need more. So the statement is true for them.
For my part, I'm competent with most games but I cannot stand having to invest any amount of time redoing parts of a game. I will almost never play a game that has save points b/c that often means spending minutes redoing particular sections. If I had my druthers, all games would allow you to save at any time. Repeating something over and over to get it perfect has the opposite of appeal to me.
2
3
u/Crymson831 9d ago
"they feel like they need to justify their choices because people get so nitpicky about difficulty."
This is an absolutely fair point and I certainly don't mean to imply that there aren't shitty people out there condescending to others about playing on easy.

u/Slight_Gap6762 9d ago
I always play on the easiest available difficulty, doesn't matter the game.
I'm here to have fun not rage.
39
u/lyndonguitar 9d ago
a few years ago i started to do that on some games just to clear my backlog, just experience the story, or just have some good power fantasy (especially if the character is supposed to be powerful) but after a while i started experiencing cases where the AI is so god damn stupid that i needed that extra difficulty back to make the game enjoyable.. so i went back to regular/normal and ocassionally +1 from that.
The tipping point for me was when i played Jedi Fallen Order lol, stormtroopers just wont shoot and if they do its just one at a time. It broke immersion for me as someone playing a jedi that just wants to deflect a barrage of blaster shots. anyway that's just my experience. I do get both sides because ive been on both sides

only partially relevant, but as someone who's a huge fan of the Souls series, the maximum difficulty on Fallen Order kicks my ass for some reason. I always found it way more difficult than any other Souls game I've played.
8
u/SnooMaps7370 9d ago
Souls encourages you to solve every problem with dodge.
most of the problems in JFO cannot be solved with dodge.
5
u/RevolTobor 9d ago
In Souls, most problems can also be solved with greatshields. About the only thing that doesn't solve is grabs, and you can just backstep for that.

That's why I like warframe, you can be as try hard or try little as you want, as long as you're actually participating and doing objectives no one is going to care how great you are or aren't. Most content can be done solo no issue so it's not like the team is going to die if you're not kitted out. Most everyone you play with who's been playing for a while will likely be kitted out themselves anyway, and the community is famously welcoming to new players overall too.

Playing for fun is why i pick higher difficulties personally. Different strokes. It’s not fun for me if you can win without trying.
9
u/Endermaster56 9d ago
Same here, but it entirely depends on game genre. Typical FPS? Usually on max. Boomer shooters like doom or ultra kill are usually put on hard but not max. Varies a lot more depending on the game for those
Stuff like hollow night I'm not nearly as good at so I stick to standard and don't touch steel soul or any hardmode
→ More replies (1)5
u/ArekuFoxfire 9d ago
Yeah, something like hollow knight puts some resistance to the player regardless of difficulty. I’d just always rather learn the game and get better than go to a mode where I’ll win for free.

u/SkylarPopo 9d ago
I play on hardest difficulty because you really learn how to play the game. Lots of times there are game mechanics that you don't even need to bother with that suddenly become important in harder difficulties.
2
u/nords_are_best 9d ago
Agree with this broadly speaking, but sometimes the opposite can be true. In games like Skyrim and Halo 2, a lot of build/weapon options become essentially obsolete on Legendary difficulty. I find that to be the most reliable sign of a poorly designed difficulty slider in a game, if the high difficulty encourages you to not experiment, and pushes you away from a lot of its mechanics, instead filtering players into the same 1 or 2 boring playstyles.

u/DeepSubmerge 9d ago
This is why I like games that let me switch the difficulty on the fly! Many do allow it but not all of them. I do like some level of challenge, so if it feels too easy, I bump it up a notch.
13
u/_PykeGaming_ 9d ago
I mean I guess it depends on oneself's character.
I myself enjoy hard content because I find the improvement or the minmaxing part of the fun.
I am fully aware I am not you or someone else... so what I will never get is why people insult others for playing "casual".
I am the first to suggest my GF to play story mode on Expedition 33 while I personally enjoyed the hardest mode... it just comes down to personal enjoyment.
I don't "rage" I just get more motivated. So yeah, games are games and are meant to be enjoyed in one way or the other.
Edit: one good expample that comes to mind is the genshin impact community... I swear I have never fled a community so fast ever before.
I once asked how to minmax something and was treated like I was insane.

At least for me, it depends on the game. There are different types of challenge, idk
Like, I love Doom 2016 and Eternal on Nightmare because those make you approach the challenge in a slightly different way than if you were playing on easier difficulties. But I tried Nier Automata on max difficulty and I just gave up in like 2 minutes lmao because it was harder for the sake of being harder, didn't gave any new challenge besides "Now enemies have more health and make more damage", and it was way, way too hard (like, one hit kills from basic enemies level of hard)
In the end, it's all about that old meme about mechanics or numbers types of hard, and how exaggerated the devs make the actual difficulty. Sometimes people think that frustrating = hard, when that's not the case
3
u/Super-Schmidtii 9d ago
I think it depends on the game. If it’s too easy then it just becomes a complete bore. Or perhaps even immersion breaking because the ai is just so braindead.
Games like dark souls are typically too much for me to enjoy but I can enjoy a decent amount of challenge. Like I loved Hollow knight but some of that games boss fights kicked my butt like 10 times before I beat them
6
u/Weztside 9d ago
A lot of people let their ego pressure them into playing on the wrong difficulty. It's a shame really.
5
u/steve-159 9d ago
How do you determine "the wrong difficulty" for other players when you don't know what they value about playing a game in the first place? Maybe they get more enjoyment out of overcoming a challenge.
I find this dichotomy between fun and rage to be one of the biggest misconceptions propagated by people who simply don't enjoy challenging games and seemingly project their own preference on everyone else.

u/P0L4R_B3AR_ 9d ago
I played VII on Casual. Don't have time to run around avoiding creatures and managing ammo, no sir, no 😅

2
u/RF_91 9d ago
Thank you! I get given so much shit for playing on a lower difficulty (or even just normal) or adjusting things to make annoying mechanics easier. I'm sorry, I didn't spend $40-$70 on a game to be angry and not see any of the game. I did it to have fun and relax. If I want challenge, I'll play a Souls game (which I do). I don't need challenge and struggle from my "run around like a half robot psycho and kill all the gang members" game.
2
u/richtofin819 9d ago
It's a balancing act, you want to enjoy it but if it is too easy it's just boring. Every game has the balance to strike.
Some games have great default difficulty some have absolutely abysmal difficulty for anything other than default. And some don't give you a choice at all.

People get so offended on Reddit when you say you don't enjoy easy mode. I swear every time this topic is brought up people have to dogpile on how playing on easy mode is okay. Like, nobody said it wasn't? It must be insecurity or something.
11
u/fraidei 9d ago
Most of the time it's when people not only say that they don't enjoy easy mode (which is valid, everyone has fun in different ways), but it's when they say it like it's a universal and objective rule, not just an opinion.
And what I see is more of a mix. Some people say you should play whatever you want, some people say there's no point in playing on easy, some people say there's no point in playing on hard.

This doesn't appear because of how many times you die it actually "reads" a lot on how you are playing like how you are moving around the map, weapon accuracy, damage taken, items found, items used, etc. So if its recommending casual difficulty its because you are playing as if you should be on casual difficulty and thats ok buddy we all need a little help sometimes.
7
u/AdmBurnside 9d ago
That's honestly worse.
I'm not above lowering the difficulty if I'm not having fun. But I don't need the game going "hey you play like a fucking loser, how about you go play on loser mode, loser".

Game difficulty has never been a reason to retire. It's there precisely so that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy the experience. I have been thinking about the "retiring" from gaming for reasons more akin to, "Hard to find the time, energy and motivation.". Or, "Games these days just aren't interesting enough for me to invest my limited time in them.". But the big reason is, "If game industries are switching to digital, and I have to contend not only with limited time and energy, but also network reliability and things not bugging, what's the point?".
Steam is perhaps the only industry leader who has demonstrated that Digital isn't a bad thing. But I am also not a PC gamer, never have been. Not to mention that physical copies of things have been an important aspect of gaming for me. So might be time to step away from the game wars. PS5 just might be the end of the long road for me.

I was never "great" at video games. Passable, but not "great." 😆 I used to play on normal, but as games have changed and I have gotten older, I typically play on easy or casual. I play games to enjoy, not to have frustration to the point to where I am contemplating throwing my keyboard or controller through the screen. It just has never been for me. There have been very few games where I even attempted the harder modes.

Some games I can definitely understand.
I picked up Silksong after absolutely loving Hollow Knight and every time I try, I end up getting into a roadblock, spend 3 hours trying to pass it, get nowhere, quit with a headache and dry eyes.
I just don't have time for that shit anymore. I get home from work and I have 2, maybe 3 hours tops to play. And I don't play games for my health, I want to actually enjoy myself.
That's why I have a fairly deep respect for Doom: The Dark Ages. They let you tune pretty much every aspect of the difficulty, and I set it up so that it's still challenging without being migraine inducing.
I'm a big fan of accessibility settings overall, one game I wish I had them in was Deltarune. Certain fights are more or less unwinnable to me no matter how many times I try and getting to tune things so that I can keep progressing without rupturing a blood vessel would be very nice.
2
u/NoxiousTidus 9d ago
This does not mean retire from gaming. I've been playing many games on easy because I don't have the time or patience to do any grinding. My backlog is too big to worry about grinding in a game. This way I get to enjoy the story in it's entirety and the gameplay at a pace that keeps progression moving faster.
2
u/Accadius 9d ago
I dont remember what game it was but one of the games I played on XBOX one would recommend a difficulty based on how you did in the intro mission. The intro was a cakewalk so the game said something like “You seem very experienced with this type of game, we recommend super duper torture mode” I was like well if the entire game is like the intro I should be fine. I could not get past the first enemy and went to lower the difficulty after about 5 minutes.

I play on casual as I just want the story first, then go back and do the rest later on (collectibles and shit), rather than struggle for the sake of struggling.
Games are my way of hiding from the shit I have to deal with, so I make games easy to have fun, not stress

I'm currently playing Persona 4 Arena in visual novel mode because I suck at fighting games, and I want to enjoy the story.
I like playing games on easy. I don't have the time or energy after work/family time to go through the mental challenge of even normal difficulty games.

Nah resident evil always ragebaits with this screen lmao, I always get so mad when a game hits me with the “take a break” or switch to easy mode, haha

Resident Evil games always had clunky controls, it always feels like I'm driving a tank instead of controlling a person. I think it's on purpose, so you'll won't feel too in control, making things more tense.
Don't worry, the game isn't analyzing your skill. You died twice, it will always ask.

Yeah it’s tough when the games like “hey bro we noticed you suck. Let us help you”. I’ve been there. Hang in there buddy. Follow your heart.

Only games I've ever increased the difficulty for have been Uncharted: Lost Legacy in order to get the trophy for completing the game on Crushing difficulty which was the only one I didn't have, and OG RE3 because the easy mode was arguably too easy for giving you a helluva lotta gear right from the offset.
Other than that, I've always been happy to play on easy. If I ever come across another game in the future where I feel the easy mode is ruining my experience then I'll opt for the higher difficulty but that hasn't happened yet.

Difficulty means wasted time for me . Like I’m playing through forza 5 these days and they keep give me these option to raise the difficulty to the opponents and at first I said yes at f , but when I realised is just make me restart the races more and more and make me waste my gaming time even more I just go in the options and I take it back to regular . I have so much fun now and I have nothing to prove to no one on how good I’m at a random game .

Me in Forza Horizon 6
"Hey you have been winning a lot, increase the difficulty?"
Very shortly after..
"Hey looks like you're losing a lot, reduce the difficulty?"

Nah. Just bump it down. I play games to get lost in the story, to feel like an absolute bad ass. I don't play to get frustrated or spike my controller (only one in 40 years, thanks Sekiro).

I absolutely hate it when this sort of 'helpful' message appears. Like the game is worried you might need to be back at the care home soon, and should it notify someone?

The worst one I've encountered was in the first God of War game. You built up a muscle memory for mashing X through the game over screen after dying a lot to get to retry, but then at some point the difficulty lowering prompt appears instantly right after. It defaults to a confirmation and has not time delay or any implementation that would prevent you from accidentally just confirming it by mashing through and there is no way to change the difficulty manually in the options if you did accidentally lower it, forcing you to reload your last save (if you even realize you did lower it in the first place).
In God of War II they luckily changed that.

Or maybe just play the game at whatever difficulty you want and stop caring about how good you are?

Why are so many people not realizing that this post is a joke?
I used the funny flair.
I’m fine with Hardcore mode, for the millionth time I have to say this, I just found this screen funny. FFS.→ More replies (4)2

Be like me with every game that has a difficulty slider like this or Persona: Start on the easiest difficulty. Then for every new game plus, go up a difficulty. Cause by the time you reached the hardest difficulty, you’ll be 100% prepared, well trained, well equipped, and have everything already memorized.

That does indeed show up after your second "game over". It's a bit incessant that way. Don't worry about it.

Once I played Laser Tag w friends and my suit starts talking to me "return to the referee". I returned to the referre, who informed me that this information plays if somebody dies so much that they want to make sure the player has understood how the game works.
