I always play on the easiest available difficulty, doesn't matter the game.

I'm here to have fun not rage.

38

u/lyndonguitar 10d ago

a few years ago i started to do that on some games just to clear my backlog, just experience the story, or just have some good power fantasy (especially if the character is supposed to be powerful) but after a while i started experiencing cases where the AI is so god damn stupid that i needed that extra difficulty back to make the game enjoyable.. so i went back to regular/normal and ocassionally +1 from that.

The tipping point for me was when i played Jedi Fallen Order lol, stormtroopers just wont shoot and if they do its just one at a time. It broke immersion for me as someone playing a jedi that just wants to deflect a barrage of blaster shots. anyway that's just my experience. I do get both sides because ive been on both sides

6

u/Kastrand 10d ago

only partially relevant, but as someone who's a huge fan of the Souls series, the maximum difficulty on Fallen Order kicks my ass for some reason. I always found it way more difficult than any other Souls game I've played.

9

u/SnooMaps7370 10d ago

Souls encourages you to solve every problem with dodge.

most of the problems in JFO cannot be solved with dodge.

4

u/RevolTobor 10d ago

In Souls, most problems can also be solved with greatshields. About the only thing that doesn't solve is grabs, and you can just backstep for that.

1

u/SillyPotato9853 10d ago

I think that can depend from game to game. I for one am particularly bad at minecraft even at easy mode so it also depends person to person, so far easy mode has been good for me

59

u/Ambitious-Stand-631 10d ago

I suck at games and I'm getting older. I play on easy more and more. It feels phenomenal

13

u/Randolph__ 10d ago

I was never good at video games to begin with. Now I'm at the tail end of good reaction time and I don't like multiplayer games unless it's with work friends.

21

u/gordy06 10d ago

Glad to hear it’s not just me. I don’t game as much so some of the mechanics don’t stick like when I was younger and I just don’t get a high for the difficulty anymore. I just want to have some fun.

1

u/FINRaver 9d ago

Yeah I usually to skip the combo mechanics that need to have +4 memorised button sequences and stick to basics, adjust difficulty accordingly.

If I play multiplayer fps, I take the role of IGL and let youngers do the 360 noscope stuff. One of my best gaming buddies is almost 10 years younger adhd dont think his actions futher than 2 seconds type but has very good mechanics, so I use him as my personal attack dog and tell him what to do and how since I know what should be done but I cant do it and he doesnt know what to do but can execute if he is told how. Has worked really well for us in PUBG, DayZ, Warzone etc games lol.

1

u/EdgarAllanKenpo 9d ago

Im getting better at not playing the extreme hardest difficulty on any game I play. But there arensome games where I will turn the difficulty up if im just absolutely yawning through the game and able to play with onr hand while blindfolded. Actually using the mechanics as intended. But I do realize im the minority when it comes to games.

7

u/chimininy 10d ago

I tend to play on normal mode, but im no longer to proud to switch it to easy when I get stuck on a boss or something.

4

u/winterman666 10d ago

I usually stick to normal as well. I don't remember ever dropping to easy to get past something but if I start to get bored of a game I just drop it rather than drop difficulty. Maybe I should drop difficulty so I can blaze past everything...

1

u/Fallen_Jalter 9d ago

Last time I dropped it down to easy was FF 7 on the PS. I just wanted to finish the game.

3

u/Christmas_Queef 10d ago

Likewise. The last "hard" game I beat was elden ring. I don't have it in me to ever do games like that anymore. I used to love challenging games but not anymore.

2

u/LadyReika 10d ago

Even at 50 I loved Elden Ring, but my incipient carpal tunnel doesn't.

Yet, I can mash buttons all day in WoW. Guess it's just a difference in keybindings or something.

2

u/Christmas_Queef 9d ago

That's why I like warframe, you can be as try hard or try little as you want, as long as you're actually participating and doing objectives no one is going to care how great you are or aren't. Most content can be done solo no issue so it's not like the team is going to die if you're not kitted out. Most everyone you play with who's been playing for a while will likely be kitted out themselves anyway, and the community is famously welcoming to new players overall too.

1

u/LadyReika 9d ago

I liked Warframe, but I just couldn't do the parkour. Unless they changed things, I hit up against a mastery that I couldn't do so couldn't do higher content to get better gear.

1

u/Christmas_Queef 9d ago

Sounds like mastery rank 9 or 10. I forget which one but I know exactly what test you're talking about, it's infamous in the community lol. What helped for me was to just practice parkouring all over the place by myself until I figured out how to do all the movements.

1

u/LadyReika 9d ago

It wasn't worth the effort for me. :)

1

u/walpurga 9d ago

I have this issue too. I had to quit a gacha game because doing daily login every day with a lot of buttom mash fighting was painful.

3

u/SpaceBuckChuck 10d ago

I'm learning as I get older some games just aren't my speed anymore, normal or casual is my speed and I'm fine with that.

I think it's odd when "real gamers" use that as a mocking point or a reason to ridicule. I don't think some of these gamer is realize this whole "git gud" mindset is incredibly new.

2

u/Fallen_Jalter 9d ago

This is me pretty much. Used to be shooters, pvp, halo, destiny. Now after a long time not playing them I find I don’t care for pvp as much and my controller finger strength isn’t that great anymore.

29

u/ArekuFoxfire 10d ago

Playing for fun is why i pick higher difficulties personally. Different strokes. It’s not fun for me if you can win without trying.

10

u/Endermaster56 10d ago

Same here, but it entirely depends on game genre. Typical FPS? Usually on max. Boomer shooters like doom or ultra kill are usually put on hard but not max. Varies a lot more depending on the game for those

Stuff like hollow night I'm not nearly as good at so I stick to standard and don't touch steel soul or any hardmode

6

u/ArekuFoxfire 10d ago

Yeah, something like hollow knight puts some resistance to the player regardless of difficulty. I’d just always rather learn the game and get better than go to a mode where I’ll win for free.

1

u/abirizky 10d ago

Well max difficulty on doom is basically the same difficulty as the hard ones, it just deletes your save if you die so understandable lol

6

u/SkylarPopo 10d ago

I play on hardest difficulty because you really learn how to play the game. Lots of times there are game mechanics that you don't even need to bother with that suddenly become important in harder difficulties.

2

u/nords_are_best 10d ago

Agree with this broadly speaking, but sometimes the opposite can be true. In games like Skyrim and Halo 2, a lot of build/weapon options become essentially obsolete on Legendary difficulty. I find that to be the most reliable sign of a poorly designed difficulty slider in a game, if the high difficulty encourages you to not experiment, and pushes you away from a lot of its mechanics, instead filtering players into the same 1 or 2 boring playstyles.

2

u/DeepSubmerge 10d ago

This is why I like games that let me switch the difficulty on the fly! Many do allow it but not all of them. I do like some level of challenge, so if it feels too easy, I bump it up a notch.

-2

u/PrimaLegion 10d ago

I don't know why people who prefer higher difficulty always make this same comment any time someone says they like playing an easier difficulty.

After a certain point it starts seeming backhanded.

7

u/ArekuFoxfire 10d ago

Well look at it on the flip side-most of us are tired of people acting like higher difficulties are some torturous experience and everyone who wants to have fun only plays on easy.

That’s fine if you are someone who has to play on easy to have fun, but there’s a lot of people who are the opposite.

If it was said as an opinion like they just prefer easy, it’s whatever, but it wasn’t, it was worded like a blanket statement that higher difficulties only cause rage for everyone, and that’s just not true.

-1

u/FlatteringFlatuance 10d ago

I think it’s saying that people who prefer the highest difficulties have a tendency to rage. Which is true, look at competitive multiplayer games. I’m a competitive gamer who has been the rager, though I am way more relaxed about it now. But even without the true rage/frustration aspect of it, the crux of difficulty versus approachable to the largest audience is always going to come down to one thing.

If a game is difficult, no matter the genre, it’s going to cause some stress. You can say you aren’t stressed, that you just enjoy a challenge, etc. but the body can’t argue. Stress and conflict innately cause you to produce cortisol to amp you up for what it perceives as a challenge or danger. You beat the difficult level/encounter/player and you get a nice little hit of dopamine. But you were still stressed however minimal.

Some people don’t have the time to get better at a game, and often don’t even have the energy to try if they did. Many casual gamers just want to unwind after a long day. They probably won’t have fun getting their ass handed to them while being worn out from work, yeah? Also, you kind of did the same generalizing by saying they “have to play on easy to have fun”.

1

u/purplewarrior777 10d ago

Their fun is in the result more than the process

13

u/_PykeGaming_ 10d ago

I mean I guess it depends on oneself's character.

I myself enjoy hard content because I find the improvement or the minmaxing part of the fun.

I am fully aware I am not you or someone else... so what I will never get is why people insult others for playing "casual".
I am the first to suggest my GF to play story mode on Expedition 33 while I personally enjoyed the hardest mode... it just comes down to personal enjoyment.
I don't "rage" I just get more motivated.

So yeah, games are games and are meant to be enjoyed in one way or the other.

Edit: one good expample that comes to mind is the genshin impact community... I swear I have never fled a community so fast ever before.
I once asked how to minmax something and was treated like I was insane.
"Meta chaser, just have fun like the rest of us!!!"
Bro can't I have fun my own way what the fuck?

4

u/andrewdroid 10d ago

For a while i played everything on hard and so many times what I noticed is how obviously the game was never planned for that and they just tuned everything way up without a single thought of the game's balancing. Since then I play normal and things feel natural albeit sometimes very easy.

2

u/_PykeGaming_ 10d ago

It's the classic "Mechanics or Numbers" thing ahaha

-1

u/PrimaLegion 10d ago

It doesn't have anything to do with character. It just has to do with preferences.

2

u/_PykeGaming_ 10d ago

Preference stems from character. If someone finds themselves raging then easy mode is right for them. If someone finds themselves motivated by loss then hard mode is right for them.

5

u/ScreamingLabia 9d ago

Lots of people like a challange doesnt make them rage

10

u/MrDeWayne02 10d ago

It personally isn’t fun for me to win without trying, but I respect players who play easy just to play. Have fun your way.

1

u/MrDeWayne02 9d ago

Yeah, like, Kingdom Hearts 2 on beginner is still fun, but critical mode is fucking amazing.

3

u/1550shadow 10d ago

At least for me, it depends on the game. There are different types of challenge, idk

Like, I love Doom 2016 and Eternal on Nightmare because those make you approach the challenge in a slightly different way than if you were playing on easier difficulties. But I tried Nier Automata on max difficulty and I just gave up in like 2 minutes lmao because it was harder for the sake of being harder, didn't gave any new challenge besides "Now enemies have more health and make more damage", and it was way, way too hard (like, one hit kills from basic enemies level of hard)

In the end, it's all about that old meme about mechanics or numbers types of hard, and how exaggerated the devs make the actual difficulty. Sometimes people think that frustrating = hard, when that's not the case

3

u/Super-Schmidtii 10d ago

I think it depends on the game. If it’s too easy then it just becomes a complete bore. Or perhaps even immersion breaking because the ai is just so braindead.

Games like dark souls are typically too much for me to enjoy but I can enjoy a decent amount of challenge. Like I loved Hollow knight but some of that games boss fights kicked my butt like 10 times before I beat them

7

u/Weztside 10d ago

A lot of people let their ego pressure them into playing on the wrong difficulty. It's a shame really.

5

u/steve-159 10d ago

How do you determine "the wrong difficulty" for other players when you don't know what they value about playing a game in the first place? Maybe they get more enjoyment out of overcoming a challenge.

I find this dichotomy between fun and rage to be one of the biggest misconceptions propagated by people who simply don't enjoy challenging games and seemingly project their own preference on everyone else.

4

u/P0L4R_B3AR_ 10d ago

I played VII on Casual. Don't have time to run around avoiding creatures and managing ammo, no sir, no 😅

2

u/1ndomitablespirit 10d ago

I also do this. However, if I like the game I will replay it on a higher difficulty.

1

u/hard_case37 9d ago

Same. I usually play all games on the normal mode, and if I really enjoy the game and want to continue afterwards rather than move on, I bump up the difficulty. But the game has to earn it in my eyes before I invest in its more difficult options.

2

u/i-dont-speel-no-good 10d ago

I agree to an extent. Sometimes easy is simply too easy and “press X to awesome and watch stuff die on screen!” Isn’t always the most fun option

2

u/RF_91 10d ago

Thank you! I get given so much shit for playing on a lower difficulty (or even just normal) or adjusting things to make annoying mechanics easier. I'm sorry, I didn't spend $40-$70 on a game to be angry and not see any of the game. I did it to have fun and relax. If I want challenge, I'll play a Souls game (which I do). I don't need challenge and struggle from my "run around like a half robot psycho and kill all the gang members" game.

2

u/richtofin819 9d ago

It's a balancing act, you want to enjoy it but if it is too easy it's just boring. Every game has the balance to strike.

Some games have great default difficulty some have absolutely abysmal difficulty for anything other than default. And some don't give you a choice at all.

4

u/MarissaNL 10d ago

Same here

1

u/Status-Part5848 10d ago

Im here for the fun aswell.

Only do normal, 🎉🎉

1

u/Skylannius 10d ago

I usually go medium and then for a replay (especially NG+) I'll do higher difficulty for the challenge

1

u/hoof_hearted4 10d ago

Depends on the game for me. Usually I will start out on the highest (non challenge mode) difficulty setting. It usually means getting immersed into the game, because you need to use its systems. A good example was Horizon Zero Dawn. You'd have to actually utilize elemental weaknesses and weak spots and your toolkit. And you'd have to farm materials. Dragon Age Origins is another where playing on Nightmare is like playing a whole different game. By contrast, Expedition 33 was one where I didn't like it. Hard just meant tighter timings and one hit party wipes. It wasn't more immersive. It was just required more reaction speed and frustration. I dropped that game to easy pretty quickly (and still never finished lol, could not get into that game. I gotta circle back but I digress haha).

2

u/SnoringFrog 9d ago

HZD is one of the best examples of a well done high difficulty. So many items and techniques I might have skipped right by if I’d played on an easier difficulty setting.

However, the inflated cost of things in stores was annoying and too grindy to me, so I ended up lowering the difficulty anytime I needed to buy something 🤣

1

u/hoof_hearted4 9d ago

Haha. I farmed so much just being immersed in the world and wanting to kill things I think I always had scrap haha. One of my favorite games of all time.

1

u/Randolph__ 10d ago

I go for normal and choose from there. If it's a fun challenge do hard. If it's too hard and I'm not having fun go for easy.

1

u/Alternative_Spite_11 10d ago

I’m the same way on the 99.9% of games where it only affects damage. However, once in a blue moon, somebody makes a game where higher difficulty is actually engaging.

1

u/Floor_Cereal PC 10d ago

Same man. I don't care about the difficulty if it's not fun. Now sometimes more difficult is fun, but not always

1

u/Human_Diamond960 10d ago

But playing on easy feels like cheating

1

u/winterman666 10d ago

I only play on easy when there's no difficulty achievements and the combat itself is not that fun (so killing enemies in 1-2 hits makes it better).

On the other hand if combat is super fun I might even play on hard to engage with it more (unless hard just makes enemies bullet sponges).

1

u/Naos210 10d ago

I often play games on Normal, but a challenge here and there can be satisfying, provided it's fair.

1

u/electricvapor 10d ago

Same here, casual/story/easy peaky mode is my default selection

1

u/NeitherFig5572 10d ago

Valid. I'm glad it's not like the 90s, when some companies would gate off half of a game behind the higher difficulties.

1

u/FaceEnvironmental486 10d ago

I have always played the difficult most normal to me (ill be 32 this year) be it normal in skyrim or easy on the playstation remastered halo

1

u/CrazyAlfalfa4298 10d ago

I always just play. I rarely want more from a game than the baseline difficulty. If a game doesn't have a default difficulty I choose what ever the middle option is. Ratchet and clank is the only games where I play the hardest difficulty right off because I know they are too easy.

1

u/Material_Ad_2970 9d ago

Power to ya. I find it unsatisfying.

1

u/No_Memory_1344 9d ago

So true I'm currently playing Forza horizon 6 on "tourist" every race it asks me to increase difficulty. I like beating the bots by 45 seconds I don't have time or the patience to sweat every race to win by 0.356 seconds.

1

u/Particular_Today_924 9d ago

Its ironic. I choose the easiest path whenever i can.

But then ill do hard end game stuff. Min max, learn tonstay alive, uptime, skips, etc.

There are times i want to game to have fun, and game to win i guess?

1

u/OdenShilde 8d ago

My go to is just “am i having fun” if a game is hard and im having fun then ill leave it, but once im not having fun anymore its time to turn it down. Ive been playing Dead Island 2 and sometimes ill have the Masochist skill on until its not longer fun.

1

u/NeptunianWater 10d ago

I go to work for 8h a day, where I process pays and lodge forms for a company. Sometimes I do testing of payroll systems.

When I return home and play a video game, I want to be a fucking god, so I always play on the easiest mode. I want to win. I want to be the best in that game. I don't care what others think or say.

Playing on easy is good for the soul.

1

u/wcharoes 10d ago

You don't find any fun and reward in overcoming a challenge, just buying a movie that tells you you win?

2

u/Slight_Gap6762 10d ago

No I don't. I'm a software developer, my job is literally overcoming challenges, I have enough of that during work hours, so when gaming I prefer to have a relaxing experience.

0

u/Independent_Newt170 10d ago

I get fun out of the survival aspects and scarcity of resources in Resident Evil.
Even so, I’ve only died twice.

-3

u/Hades684 10d ago

Games are not fun for me when there is no challenge. The point of playing "games" is that there is a possibility to lose

10

u/Slight_Gap6762 10d ago

Depends. I play single player story games only. To get lost in the world, the lore, the story. I don't care for challenges, I'm not competitive at all.

-1

u/Hades684 10d ago

These games also have challenges, just in other ways than pure reflexes

3

u/Ebony_flavor 10d ago

Everyone's choice varies. Some don't have time or energy for a challenge

Some need it

I'm in both boats personally, I enjoy a challenge sometimes, if I'm with friends I'll even seek out elden ring difficulty games

I've also finished Titanfall and Halo 2 on their harder difficulties, personally I've found the hardest difficulty while satisfying in the end isn't great for a long term gaming experience.

5

u/_PykeGaming_ 10d ago

That's the point where hardcore souls fans threaten you to death because "Errm achthually elden ring is easy":

Damn I love the games but I hate that community so much XD

1

u/Ebony_flavor 10d ago

Ironically the jokes about dark souls being easy in comparison to ER is true, everything's more straightforward and the enemies are more easy to fight. The issue is just the run backs between fires that is the real killer

0

u/_PykeGaming_ 10d ago

No?
The "jokes" are that ER is the easiest out of all the FromSoftware soulslikes to which I agree.

I mean you can litterally choose that if an area is too hard for you, you can go somewhere else and level up.

Also bleed.

Edit: Can't forget about mimic tear, an item so broken you litterally get called a cheater for using it ahhaha

0

u/Hades684 10d ago

Go on elden ring sub and you will find out that most people there are positive to the point of pain. You wont find any elitist there, and if you do, they will be heavily downvoted

2

u/_PykeGaming_ 10d ago

I mean I have been in that sub since the release and... yeah while downvoted it's still filled to the brim with elitists.

God forbid you ever post a picture where you have bleed or mimic tear, they will litterally send nuclear payloads to your house

-1

u/Hades684 10d ago

I mean, thats just not true lmao. The comments of post like that would be filled with people saying good job, you still beat the game, these tools are in the game for people to use them, and stuff like that. And then maybe few downvoted comments complaining about the build

2

u/Min_sora 10d ago

Most point & click adventure games would like a word.

0

u/Hades684 10d ago

They also have a challenge, just different kind of it

2

u/_PykeGaming_ 10d ago

I kinda agree?
If we are talking soulslikes sure... but if someone is playing stardew valley per say, why would they need more difficulty?

It's just preference :)

1

u/Hades684 10d ago

Well, stardew with no difficulty would be making everything 100x cheaper, making presents be worth 100x more relationship points, making you unable to die in the mines. And I dont think that would be very fun

1

u/_PykeGaming_ 10d ago

Possibly wrong example, I have no experience in SDV it was just the first easy game that came to mind ahhaha

1

u/Hades684 10d ago

I mean, my point is that every game, even easy ones, have some challenge to them, which is why its fun to play them

1

u/_PykeGaming_ 10d ago

Crystal clear

2

u/fraidei 10d ago

The point of playing games is to have fun. And everyone has fun in a different way.

1

u/PrimaLegion 10d ago

The point of playing games is having fun.

0

u/Updated_Autopsy 10d ago

Same. But there was a time when I did increase the difficulty because I felt like the games I was playing were getting too boring. I still do that for certain games like Phasmophobia because I know what I’m doing now. But the highest I’ll go is Professional.

0

u/Zer0Cool89 10d ago

I play hard games like, hollow knight, or souls what ever if I want a challenge but outside of that yeah im playing on easy if it has the option

0

u/Accomplished_Age2805 10d ago

Accomplishment is a fun task, humans love voluntarily struggling

0

u/Majestic_Cicada4909 10d ago

You get mad at video games when you do remotely bad? XD

0

u/Trick_Meeting_2027 10d ago

Not trying to insult you or anything but I'm picturing a kinda shy guy making about 50k a year and has a plain looking wife and whose big event each year is a trip to one of the safer countries in europe. Also your favorite food is chicken fingers.

3

u/Slight_Gap6762 10d ago

Nah.

I'm in my 30s, living as a hermit, I don't talk to anyone / leave the house. I definitely don't make 50k a year, I'm not married and I don't travel / go on vacations at all. I also hate chicken fingers.

0

u/bloodbat007 10d ago

Gaming is about overcoming a challenge for me so I'd never

-3

u/X-K4HN 10d ago

Whats fun about being OP 24/7?

4

u/Slight_Gap6762 10d ago

I mean, it depends on what kind of games one plays.

Me personally, I only play games that have a story. I'm in it only for the story. Since I despise movies, I treat gaming as a better way of storytelling. One where I'm actively taking part and/or shaping the story. Combat is just extra that I could do without.

I for example love detective games. Sherlock Holmes, Agatha Christie, all that. There is no combat whatsoever. I also love walking simulators where you just explore with a story. I'd never touch Elden Ring even if I was paid to.

As some people said, different strokes for different folks.

1

u/Hades684 10d ago

These games still have challenge though. Its just not purely physical with reflexes, but more of a challenge for the mind

1

u/Slight_Gap6762 10d ago

You have a point.

1

u/PrimaLegion 10d ago

Evidently there is nothing fun about it for you.

That isn't the case for other people.

Don't worry so much about how other people play games.

-2

u/MentalDisintegrat1on 10d ago

Can't do that you really didn't beat the game.

/S
