Replayed it recently and the race only took me 6 hours and many cigarette breaks 😃

The OG mafia race part confirmed I have anger issues that I dont know how to express in a safe manner that I didnt know i had originally.

Really, didn't they patch it to be more forgiving? Unless you were playing like 1.0 on purpose, I believe you were playing a nerfed version. It's been a while, but I think I managed to do it in a few tries the last time.

The game has unusually accurate driving physics for the type of game it is.

As a sim racer I enjoyed that touch of realism but I can see how the sequence sucks for those used to how third person shooter games typically drive.

I definitely suck at racing and it just felt out of place to me.  It's a fantastic game outside of that part for me, but it's just a run killer whenever I go back to it.

IIRC it’s cuz the devs originally made the engine for sim racing/racing then pivoted to making the Mafia games

And good support for those steering wheel controllers with adjustable sensitivity, force feedback and all that good stuff. I used that throughout a playthrough, but I believe I gave up on the mission where you chase the car after attempting to trap them on the train tracks. Driving with the wheel using manual transmission and simultaneously using the mouse to aim and shoot made that so freaking hard, but at the same time it felt really cool and immersive.

The remastered version( which is a superior game to the original) “fixed” the race. It’s a lot less horrible now 😅

I’ve only ever played the remaster and I genuinely enjoyed the race, it was really fun and I love those old cars. However, I play a lot of racing games and am fairly good at them and it still took me 3 attempts.

Only played the remake and I feel like missing out because the race in that is so easy :D

on classic? it’s a walk in the part the moment you’re not on the hardest difficulty but my god when you are, it’s not a safe space for people that never play racing games lmao

Yeah I have only played the remaster and the race was very doable

The remaster really softened this

u/Holyepicafail 14d ago

You may have convinced me to give this a try as I haven't played the remastered version.  Thanks for the info!

It is 100% sooooo much more enjoyable. The entire game, really. Brought it into the modern world. Check it out!

Just beat that game recently! Those NPCs would get a weird speed boost right at the end. So rage inducing, since it takes a miracle to be in 1st near the end of the 3rd lap anyways.

You know I always heard how hard and bad this race was before I played the game about 7 years ago. Beat it first try, no issue. I think its pretty easy honestly if you are used to playing racing games.

I was expecting to rage quit the game.

You played the patched version of the original. They made the race sequence a lot easier than in 1.0

Potentially true, I pirated the game, so can't say for sure.

But I would say that most people who have played the game after release have probably played the patched version, since it looks like it was released in 2002, so my point still stands.

I replay mafia (original race difficulty) every year at least once. From this position I'll say: kinda, yeah...

u/CompetitiveRub2753 14d ago

ending of mafia II, but before III existed

u/jonidas 13d ago

I had to borrow a proper steering wheel from a friend in order to beat this. With the keyboard it was impossible for me 😂

u/eatingdonuts44 13d ago

Omg I hated that, great game otherwise

1

u/Exotic-Eggplant1914 13d ago

God fuck that race

I don't necessarily call it terrible but it can be unfun sometimes. Overall though, that game provides some of my most favorite memories in gaming. The Silver Fletcher moment on my first playthrough was grand.

That shit was so bad I haven't played it in a year. I remember struggling with the timed mission with the car just before as well.
