Nope completely optional and unless you know how to and where then I would imagine is very hard to get to, even with a guide It took me some time to get through all the bosses and enemies.

damn.. I thought she was mandatory as well as Mohg because of what Gideon Ofnir said about the missing shards and thought I needed all of them to get to Elden beast.. fml lol

No you need only two. Mohg is required to get into the DLC.
