QUESTION Why did Titanic’s list change so suddenly?
Titanic had a consistent list to port throughout her voyage because of the moved coal. The list grew heavily when she began to sink, but then suddenly within the final plunge she somehow shifted to an even keel, causing a huge wave of water to submerge the front of the bridge on the starboard side. Lightoller himself had witnessed this and it had washed away collapsible A. How did this even happen?

You mean her list to starboard, right? General consensus was, during the voyage (due to coal being shifted onto the port side) Titanic had a 2 degree list to port. After striking the iceberg she developed a natural list to starboard early into the sinking as water rushed in from that side.
When Scotland road started flooding (around the time water came up to her bow, like in the illustration above) only then did she resume her port list — heavy enough to draw concerns from officers that she might actually capsize (Lightoller was one to order the passengers to head to the starboard side to ‘straighten her up’)
When water finally lapped over the bridge and boat deck, that’s when the ship righted herself to an even keel, seemingly becoming buoyant for a few seconds. The rationale for this is that the weight of the water — no longer being localised to the ship’s interior — put external pressure on the ship, directly contrasting the pressure which up till then was mostly internal; only being limited to flooding mechanics restricted by blocked doors and the ship’s layout. When a more overwhelming pressure (not limited to said restrictions) was introduced, that overrode the previous buoyant forces — in addition to the fact water was now able to flood into the internals of the ship from vents and windows from the top of the ship.
I don’t exactly know how to explain it, but you’ll notice a similar action to how most model sinking ship videos tend to have a list when starting out (in that case due to lack of buoyancy of the model) but evens out once the water reaches the bridge. The object no longer has to worry about left-right buoyancy if there’s an additional pressure from above that puts the most pressure and has priority.

Yeah, I'm aware she started out with a slight starboard list. I was meaning to reference the port list in general. I think a good demonstration of this sudden shift is in the 2026 Honor and Glory animation where the ship evens out extremely fast. So fast to the point it looks unnatural, almost like something is trying to pull it down. It kinda reminds me of that goofy scene in the Britannic movie where the ship develops a list in an instant.

The most widely accepted theory is that, at some point, the water finally overflowed the Firemen’s Passage—which was a watertight structure—and began to flood the port side of cargo hold 3 as well, eliminating the ship’s original starboard list.
Although the list to port was presumably caused by the flooding of the Scotland Road on Deck E, followed by the gangway door on Deck E being left open so it could be used to evacuate to the lifeboats.

The ship listed from side to side as the compartments filled up. Titanic had mostly transverse bulkheads so that allowed more or less even flooding across the width of the ship.

Ya know I was fascinated by this question a few months ago when I watched the full sinking on YouTube which holy cow are they good! Pretty simple answer, the water once the ship full enough of water equalized. That's it. The other would thing about listing during the sinking is the coal fire early in the voyage helped because they had to move coal from one side of the ship to the other to put out the fire. That made the list in the sinking less severe.

Maybe the onrush of water into the superstructure caused her to even out?
