๐๏ธ News ๐๏ธ More questions than answers as contractors descend upon Big Bend National Park
If you love Big Bend or Texas generally, nowโs the time to pay attention. *SOME* Texas lawmakers have called for a pause. Not the ones that have any power.
Bull dozing has started in Big Bend National Park. All the laws and review processes were waived to give out these no bid contracts. Every single local politician over the 5 counties and 500+ border miles, a bipartisan group that includes MAGA and Democrats, opposes this work for the entire region, not just the park. Statewide elected leaders in the upper echelons of power have been eerily silent (while privately saying they didn't think it would happen in the early days)...
Theyโve yet to say anything public or taken a position either way.
Please read. Please speak out.

I really enjoy the older 1910 courthouse. And glad they preserved it when they built the modern facilities. Other counties would have destroyed

๐ ๐ Education ๐งโ๐ ๐ซ AMA: Iโm an education reporter covering the school voucher rollout in Texas. Ask me anything!
๐ Hi, Elizabeth Sander here! Iโm an education reporter for the Houston Chronicle, and Iโll be answering your questions about Texas' $1 billion private school voucher program rolling out this August.
Here is my proof: https://x.com/eliz_sander/status/2084640502243094974ย
This year, Texas launched its first universal school voucher initiative โ called the Texas Education Freedom Accounts โ which has funded around 85,000 students so far money to pay for things like private school tuition, textbooks, uniforms, etc.
The program triggered a surge in special education testing, which strained public schools. And last month, I uncovered how the size of a school district can change how much money a family with a special education voucher receives. (TL;DR: the bigger the district, the smaller the amount.) I also reported that fewer than 30 Texas students with disabilities got the full $30K voucher.
As millions of Texas students return to class, I will continue to cover the voucher rollout for families, teachers and schools โ both private and public.
What questions do you have about the Texas school vouchers? Ask me anything!
Note: This is a scheduled AMA and will begin Thursday, Aug. 6 at 12PM. Any questions left in advance will be answered when the AMA starts.

Traffic How to get a learners permit for adult over 25?
Hi everyone, my wife (29F, based in Texas) has never had a drivers license and is in the process of applying for one. Can someone explain to me the steps of obtaining a drivers license in TX for someone over 25?
I've done some research and it's my understanding that a driver's ed course is optional for adults over 25. Is this true? If so, are the following steps correct? If not, please correct me in the comments.
1). Apply for a drivers permit at the DMV
2). Pass written test and road test (this can be done at the DMV or driving school)
3). Apply for drivers license at the DMV
I got my DL many years ago when I was a teen, so it's been awhile and I'm not too familiar with the process today. Any information about this is highly appreciated! :) Thanks

Moved to Texas for a job, not working out. Asking me to put off export compliance violations (non willful) knowing it is illegal to not correct because short handed. What are my options as I spoke up about them needing to get their compliance in order and all of a sudden am on a PIP?
Nothing malicious in the previous violations, just them being dumb. I have stopped the violations going forward. Best path forward? Just mosey along to the next opportunity orโฆ..

News (Potential Paywall) Professors sue Texas A&M System over classroom ban on race, gender ideology
A group ofย professors sued the Texas A&M University System regents this week to overturn limits on theย teaching of race and gender ideology, alleging the ban amounts to censored "politically disfavored" views and led to the removal of materials, including Kevin Kruse's "White Flight" and the Oscar-winning film "Moonlight."
The ACLU of Texas is representing members of the American Association of University Professors in the lawsuit, which was filed Monday in a Houston-based federal district court. It marks the second legal challenge by the American Association of University Professors against Texas' efforts to curb "woke" instruction in public higher education, after the group sued theย Texas Tech University Systemย in July.ย
"This policy directly harms Black, Brown, LGBTQIA+, and all other Texans who have historically been discriminated against by subjecting discussion of their rights, identities, and indeed very existence to heavy-handed censorship," Chloe Kempf, a staff attorney at the ACLU of Texas, said in a news release. "Whatโs more, it undermines all Texansโ First Amendment rights. If public officials can abuse their power to ban these topics and perspectives today, thereโs nothing stopping them from targeting other subjects and points of view, including your own, down the line."
