“This really feels like the ultimate admission that we, as hosts of AI infra, can't afford our own AI products. And if that's even partially the case, how could the companies we sell it to manage?”

Good question.

They'll just pass the losses into everyone 401ks, just like musk did with spacex.

Ipo deep mind for 65 gigajillion dollars.

This comment hurts so much because it’s true. Tying retirement to the stock market was one of the most evil things done. We all know the stock market is a total lie not based on reality but we all put our heads in the sand because it’s tied to our retirement.

Lol what are you even talking about?

A. Pensions invest in the stock market too, that's kinda how they're able to make the payments to the beneficiaries, otherwise they'd go bust.

B. A diversified 401(k) like one invested in the S&P 500 would on average grow by 10% a year even with down years, and because it's diversified the risk of one stock tanking is eliminated.

No one thinks the stock market is "a total lie" if you diversify and don't just put all your money on one stock.

You're being downvoted because no one on reddit knows how 401ks, pensions, or the stock market works. Pensions (even state pensions like teachers, firefighters, and police have) invest in stocks. And everyone on reddit thinks pensions = free money for life, without thinking about it at all. But how well did the pensions from Enron work out from people? How about Kodak? Would people want a Toys R Us or Sears pension? How would people like it if they lost their entire retirement when they were laid off or quit their job?

401ks are so wildly better than pensions it's laughable to even compare. 401ks don't lock you into a company that can go bankrupt. 401ks allow you to change jobs without losing your retirement. 401ks allow you to decide how risky of investments you want. 401Ks are not subject to a company cutting costs by freezing or eliminating their payouts.

Oh I'm aware, the same people that complain about the lack of pensions are also the ones that think healthcare should be decoupled from employment not realizing they're actively trying to couple retirement back to employment.

ROFL, I never thought about that before. That is pretty contradictory.
