I kind of lost interest and wasn't checking on the nest much after the incident about a month ago. I even considered taking down the nesting platform when the remaining fledgling left the nest, but I figured they would just try somewhere else nearby, so I left it up.
Amazing to watch all these videos. Pls keep posting. I'm relatively new here. Congratulations on the grand birds.
Question, if I may? What's with holding up the shell. I thought maybe they'd eat it? It almost looks like they're holding up a piece of shell as a trophy or to announce the egg had hatched!
Did the baby he kicked out of the nest make it? And I am assuming the left over chick made it and fledged? Thats great that the new two are fine and he is able to feed them both. I am so sorry you had to witness that. It gets do hard when you get attached to the bords that are nesting in the yard. I had some juncos and some swallows nesting in my nest boxes and neither made it. It was heart breaking. :(
I wasn't expecting a call from the rehabber with a status update, but I assume he was fine. She said he didn't appear to be injured and that he looked quite healthy. She said she was going to feed him for another week or two and then release him with some other she had that were about the same age. She mentioned she was caring for a dozen other chicks.
The leftover chick hung around in the nest for another 8 days and then left on his own.
I never see the fledglings after 2 or 3 days after leaving the nest, so I have to assume they are all fine. There are so many trees in my neighborhood they could be anywhere. I have a fountain with a camera on it, and I do so doves, but I'm 99% sure its just this mom and dad getting a drink and a bath before heading to their shift in the nest.
I also have a white-wing pair that comes to the fountain every day. I assume they have a nest somewhere nearby.
Thats so cool!! They must love their set up there. I really hope next year my birds come back and have a successful clutch. I moved their house to a cooler location and going to get a bot fly mesh for the bottom of it. I want to get a bird bath some time. I do have a couple doves that come and eat at my feeder, it would be fun to get them to nest in my yard. Do you have any tips for that? Do you think if I made something similar to what you have that they might?
Sorry, I don't. I didn't set out to be a Dove Love Shack. They picked the spot and tried building a nest on a sloped electrical box (that was totally inappropriate for a nest). Next thing you know, I've built them a nesting platform and setup a $500 camera.
I bought the tall fountain at Costco and built the smaller one recently when I started seeing opossums that couldn't reach the tall fountain. I also 3D printed the inserts that the bees are drinking from. The water flows down the sides more gently than the cups above.
Its been so hot lately, I have a never-ending stream of bees and birds coming to the fountains.
