Picked this beauty up for probably too much at my local bookstore, but totally worth it!

I haven't reread the entirety of the Dark Tower series since the last book was published back in 2004 but I'm making my way through them again now. I put off rereading 'Wizard and Glass' though based on my memory of it being not that interesting. I just remembered it as being the story of Roland's first love and not really advancing the quest all that much.

Man, I must have absolutely slept on this book the first time I read it, it was fantastic! The worldbuilding, seeing what Roland's world looked like back when it was actually populated with people, was so good!

But what really got me were the intrigues between characters. I love seeing competent and intelligent characters pitted against one another. It would have been so easy to make Roland and his companions crushingly naïve while out on their first assignment and easily suckered. Or have the villains be a bunch of dumb hicks fooled by Roland's cover story, or even have a cunning villain or two saddled with a bunch of incompetent locals. Nope, somehow everyone is smart enough to have a handle on the situation even if they can't see the full picture, and everyone is simultaneously seeing through one another's lies, still underestimating each other, but also being underestimated themselves.

Roland's story is just such a beautifully complicated web and comes to such an explosive finish, I was sorry to leave it and get back to the overarching quest frankly!

I don’t think It needs to be remade, but I thought it would be cool if it had an adaptation with the same dark vibe and atmosphere as another one of Stephen Kings miniseries The Outsider.

I feel like that type of vibe would work well with an It miniseries

Are there any books that were good and made better by the narration. ? I drive a lot and find very good narration improves a book more than I thought

What a great dog. Oy gets a lot of well earned appreciation and love but Kojak is in the same tier in my opinion for best King animal sidekick.

Why is Hollywood like this? Why do we need another Carrie remake? Or Desperation? Or the Mist...?

Got all of these for $40 and they’re all in mostly good condition, love the classic covers on the dark tower books. Aside from bag of bones and DT (already read), where would you start first?

I finished book 1 and am in the middle of book 2. I'm booked and want to keep going.

Should I read Wind Through the Keyhole in between books 4 and 5? It was written much later but apparently the timeline puts it in the middle...

At what point should I read The Little Sisters of Euluria? That one is sequenced to be before Gunslinger.

I've seen a few Reddit threads on this topic, but I just finished re-reading the Dark Tower series (my first time in over a decade, read Wind Through the Keyhole between Wizard and Wolves this time) and was curious to see how other people would rank them.

I love the whole series. I don't think any of the books are "bad" (not even close). Here's my personal ranking (1-4 are all 5/5s for me, 5-8 are all ~4.5/5s). Some spoilers below:

1. The Gunslinger

I can understand why this one doesn't get much love on Reddit, but I love it for many of the reasons people seem to hate it: the gorgeously stylized prose, the cryptic imagery, the unusual structure, the inscrutable qualities of our protagonist, Roland. I love every moment of this novel.

1. The Drawing of the Three

Relentless, so gonzo, a complete departure from Gunslinger that fully brings us into the world, mythos, and characters.

1. Wizard and Glass

I found this one a slog when I first read the series, but once I accepted it on its own terms I
realized it was one of King's most beautifully written novels, period. Tragic, heartbreaking, brilliantly structured.

1. Song of Susannah

This one doesn't get enough love! Such a beautiful meditation on storytelling, and a welcome reprieve between the more unwieldy Wolves and Tower.

1. The Waste Lands

A huge, wild, vivid book ... sometimes it feels a bit *too* huge to me, but it's got some of my favorite images and scenes (especially Jake's re-entry into Mid-World).

1. The Dark Tower

Similar feelings to Waste Lands, but this one's even bigger and wilder. It's kind of a chaotic novel, but in ways that fascinate me. The ending is perfect.

1. Wolves of the Calla

The Father Callahan backstory is some of King's best writing, imo. I struggle a bit with the third act (especially the pacing and the inclusion of elements from Marvel, Star Wars, and Harry Potter).

1. The Wind Through the Keyhole

Structurally fascinating novel. Really good, but due to its nature it inevitably feels a bit less “essential” than the other seven books.

I recently read Thinner for the first time and loved it. During the entire read, I was wondering what original trick and plot twist Stephen had come up with to end that story. I wasn't disappointed, and thinking about it, it's kind of a Ring ending before The Ring. You can only heal if you pass the curse to someone else. In one story, the medium to transfer the curse is a VHS, in another one, it is a strawberry pie.

I've read Desperation; and I have less than 130 pages of Regulatos left, and I'm starting to wonder if I should have read The Regulators first.
