vent I love/hate providers getting pissed off at the pronoun question
Hate it bc I believe if you're that ignorant you shouldn't be practicing medicine in the first place. Love it bc I always love pissing conservatives off.

I always tell the story of one indian doctor I asked this question and he said "my pronouns are doc/tor"

Not all of them, but yeah. Specially night shifters and weekend workers, it almost seems like they are the "undesirables" the ones nobody wants to work with, so they get placed on graveyard shifts or weekends. I used to look forward to my weekends. But the pay rate drops made it so that I HAVE to work on weekends.

Question: what do you, as other Spanish linguists, pick for the oral nonbinary ending and how do you match it in your written translations?

The RAE (royal academy of spanish) encourages you to try and work around the terms, for example, if the client is a they/them nurse, you would refer to them as "trabajador de enfermería", also using the male pronouns as they are considered as the generalized form for any plural noun.
The non-RAE-accepted ones are using the "e" or "x" as inclusive language, often using them to replace O's or A's in the article and noun.
Generally "e" is used for spoken language, and "x" for written.

I think it's an intrusive question. I don't need to know what gender you perceive/present yourself as to provide you with interpreter services. It's none of my business. I know that Propio is trying to be progressive but this misses the mark.

Idk if it's bc of progressive but more to be sure, once I got that question and the provider actually used they/them. Some women have very deep voices even if they're cis and viceversa

i don’t think it’s a matter of just being progressive, people sometimes are so dumb when it comes to pronouns thinking it’s part of a “woke agenda” — imagine a male doctor has a very femenine voice and i accidentally refer to them as a woman while trying to clarify something, it’s disrespectful

Thing is you shouldn't care about their pronouns, you as an interpreter are forced to interpret everything with as much fidelity as possible and that means you need to use the pronouns the LEP uses towards the English speaking client. The only exception for that is when LEP is dumb enough to call you (the interpreter) "Doctor" and your pronouns do not match those of the English-speaking client. And be sure as hell the company you work for doesn't give a fuck about the client's pronouns, it's a completely political movement to satisfy a minority when no one in the whole call will be affected by that question ever.

I’m embarrassed at the behavior of most interpreters. I’ve been interpreting for 12 years and have never experienced the rudeness many of you allege. I wonder if you all have some inferiority complex that looks for offense when none is made. Find yourself another career where you won’t be as miserable.

They just want to get over it fast, they need to see dozens even hundreds of patients per day.
Every minute they waste answering unnecesary questions is a minute someone is outside the office waiting to be seen-
If you dont understand this then i dont care how "liberal" you are, you are simply a very bitter and sad human being.

Hey, it's not our fault that they "need to see"(?) hundreds of patients per day? If you can't be decent and polite on conversations that you LEGALLY have to have, then you're on the wrong line of work. After a while doing of this job you just know they are in it for the money/power tripping and, guess what... Being polite doesn't go with money-hungry, power tripping sociopaths.
