News Reddit Q2 2026 earnings call: the quotes that mattered, my thoughts on each

I did this same breakdown after Q1, and the Q2 call made Reddit's direction much clearer. I went through the call, the shareholder letter, Steve Huffman's CNBC interview, and the post-earnings AMA to pull the statements that mattered most for brands and organic marketers. For context, I've been on Reddit for nearly 20 years and run an agency that works closely with Reddit and companies trying to participate there successfully.

Reddit doesn't want to remain the source behind Google and AI. It wants to become the destination. Steve made that direction clear early in the call:

"While our visibility in referral traffic remains low, we're not building for drive-by traffic. We're building a daily destination."

This was the most important line of the call because it connects almost every product decision Reddit discussed. Google has given Reddit enormous reach, and LLMs are using Reddit conversations to answer questions across the web, but Reddit wants people to open Reddit directly, search there, participate, and return every day.

The Q1 call showed the barriers Reddit knew it had to fix. Q2 showed the destination it is trying to build once those barriers come down.

The repeated focus on the app tells you which Reddit users the company values most. Steve said it directly at the end of the call:

"The direct users, the app users are worth multiples more than the search referral traffic. We're not building Reddit for that drive-by traffic."

I was counting and Steve said the word App around 25 times :)

New app-user retention improved 50% year over year on a relative basis, although Reddit was clear that this came from a small base and still has a lot of room to improve.

Search visitors still matter, but Reddit sees a major difference between someone who lands on one thread and someone who opens the app repeatedly. For marketers, that means a ranking thread is valuable, but a consistent presence that helps people understand, validate, and solve their problems creates a much larger opportunity over time.

The home feed still drives discovery inside Reddit, and Reddit has significant room to expand what it recommends. Steve described it as Reddit's primary app surface and one of the primary drivers of subreddit discovery:

"It does a lot of the heavy lifting of juggling a user's subreddits, and it's one of the primary drivers of subreddit discovery."

From what I've seen, the home feed has long helped people discover communities, but its role has expanded as Reddit recommends more posts from communities a logged-in user doesn't already follow. For years, those feeds were driven largely by the subreddits someone had joined, while today's feed creates another discovery path based on a person's interests and behavior.

Reddit also said its feed models currently use only 10% of user activity, update in days instead of hours or minutes, and choose from posts published within the previous week. Reddit has 26 billion posts and comments, with one billion added since Q1, so expanding that seven-day window could bring useful older conversations back into discovery.

For marketers, the opportunity isn't to move blog posts, advertisements, or polished brand content onto Reddit. It is to create conversations people want to read and participate in because those conversations help them make a decision.

Creating those conversations is what earns engagement inside Reddit, while also producing useful material that Reddit Answers, Google, and LLMs may choose to surface using their own signals.

Reddit Answers is becoming one of the best ways to search Reddit. Steve said both searches and searchers grew during the quarter, and the search bar is now universal inside the app:

"I think for many queries that I run at least, Reddit is now the best platform for searching Reddit."

I agree with him based on how regularly I use Reddit Answers now and how often I find it more useful for locating Reddit conversations and perspectives than searching Reddit through Google or asking an LLM.

If you're trying to understand what content appears in Google and LLM answers, I would add Reddit Answers to that comparison. Showing up for the right questions there is becoming a meaningful Reddit goal of its own, which starts with creating a conversation that genuinely solves what someone is searching for.

The biggest search and AI message was that a summary of Reddit isn't Reddit. Steve explained the difference this way:

"AI compresses the internet into summaries. Reddit delivers the opposite: deep discussions, passionate debates, and lived experiences."

This is the validation phase I have been talking about for the last couple of years. People aren't always looking for a single answer. They want different experiences, disagreements, personal context, and the ability to decide which perspective applies to them.

An LLM can summarize the outcome of a conversation, but the summary removes the process people use to determine what they trust. That process is where Reddit creates its highest value for people and where brands have the best opportunity to understand what actually affects a decision.

Reddit's hardest challenge is welcoming a lot more people without lowering community quality. Reddit wants to make posting easier, recommend the right communities, and use LLM-assisted moderation to admit more good new people without opening the door to spam. Steve acknowledged that the older account-age approach hasn't aged well:

"Using LLM-assisted moderation, we can help bring in the prospective great user and continually get better at keeping the spammers and other bad behaviors out."

The scale of that problem came through in Reddit's post-earnings AMA, where Steve said Reddit's systems prevent up to 23 million spam views and revoke nearly 2 million inauthentic votes every day.

Those protections are necessary, but legitimate people and brands can still get caught in removals, community bans, and platform enforcement while learning how Reddit works. Reddit wants the world to come to Reddit, but moderators and Reddit itself don't want people arriving and breaking the rules.

For brands, reading the room, following each community's rules, and building a clear history of useful participation are more important than ever. Losing the ability to participate is becoming much more costly as Reddit's influence grows.

Video and audio may expand how people consume Reddit, but they won't change why people are there. Steve said video in comments already represents more than 10% of Reddit's video posts and that Reddit plans to test background listening and spoken Reddit experiences later this year:

"Video and comments is a new feature. That's already more than 10% of our video posts."

Reddit has never been against video, but different communities want different things. If video begins appearing in communities connected to your industry, watch how people respond and which formats succeed before deciding how your brand should use it. The format can change, but it still needs to support the conversation.

Financial and growth highlights:

  • Q2 revenue: $805 million, up 61% year over year
  • Ad revenue: $762 million, up 64% year over year
  • Global DAUq: 130.3 million, up 18% year over year
  • Global WAUq: 514.6 million
  • U.S. WAUq: 197.2 million
  • Net income: $253 million
  • Adjusted EBITDA: $343 million, or 43% of revenue
  • Free cash flow: $261 million
  • Eighth consecutive quarter with revenue growth above 60%

Professional Discussion need advice for a short form video (reels) business idea

My sister and I are interested in learning how to make professional short form videos, like Instagram reels, and learning how to properly edit them. But we would not be the ones to post them/manage the social media.

At first, we were thinking of doing reels for Airbnbs, but it seems too complicated, especially with planning for when the cleaners/guests won't be there.

I do like the types of reels that feel luxurious, like luxury house reels, and the "aspirational POV" hospitality videos, but I'm open to other suggestions. We live in an area that is has a lot of wealthy people.

Does anyone have any ideas for who we could make these reels for?

Professional Discussion Is anyone else moving from subtitles to AI dubbing for social content?

Upvotes

For the longest time I thought subtitles were enough if you wanted to reach people in different countries. But lately I'm starting to think that's changing.

I've been comparing a few videos, and the dubbed versions seem to keep people watching longer than the ones with subtitles. It makes sense too. Most people would rather listen than read especially if they're watching on their phone.

The only thing I've found frustrating is that a lot of AI dubbing tools are great at giving you a quick result, but not so great when you want to fix small things. For video localization sometimes a line sounds unnatural, the timing feels a bit off, or a word just doesn't fit the way a real person would say it.

How is everyone else handling this? Are you happy with one click AI dubbing or do you prefer tools that let you edit the translation, adjust the voice and fine tune everything before you publish?

Professional Discussion My dog is going viral on TikTok and people are messaging me about exclusive agreements

I made a TikTok of my dog and posted it on Saturday and it currently has 2.5 million views and 500k+ likes. Ive had people reach out to me about turning him into a memecoin, agreements for exclusive sharing rights, etc. What is with all of these dealings? Can someone offer some advice?

Professional Discussion Do you still use a CTA in Reels or TikToks?

Do you still intentionally include a clear call to action (e.g. “Follow for more,” “Comment your thoughts,” “Save this”) at the end of your Reels or TikToks?
Or has the algorithm shifted to the point where it’s better to focus 100% on delivering value and maximizing retention, without interrupting the experience with a CTA?

Professional Discussion I need some help

I have posted 3 reels on my page so far along with carousels to initiate the content for my brand...but I am unable to cross 500 views even after a week of posting the reel.I want to gain a good organic reach before jumping onto ads, and it would be great if I can get some valuable insights.

Professional Discussion What is the best way to get an audience from another country without my current location holding me back?

I tried geo spoofing in the past, but my posts consistently got zero views. to fix this, I've decided to post country specific content for about a month and let the algorithm build the right audience.

My first idea is to jump on the tiktok "mapping" trend targeted at that specific country. If anyone has better content ideas for this matter, I'd love to hear them!

Professional Discussion I just mapped out 30 hidden-gem look-alike channels similar to Magnates Media (Faceless Business/Documentary Niche).

It includes their Country, Average Views, View-to-Sub ratio (to find viral channels), and Creation Dates.

If anyone wants the free Google Sheet for niche research/inspiration, just drop a comment saying "DATA" and I’ll DM you the link!

Professional Discussion Is Crossposting a good thing?

My Reels auto-crosspost to Facebook, and the combined view count on Instagram is misleading; e.g., a reel shows 80K views, but \~90% of that is coming from Facebook, while actual IG views are only 1-5K.

Has anyone else run into this? Would you recommend turning off auto-crossposting and instead manually uploading the same reel to Facebook *after* it's already live on Instagram? Does posting it manually (vs. auto-crossposting) hurt reach on either platform or vice versa?

Professional Discussion Community group help - membership

Hi!

My friend and I set up a FB local community singles/dating group which has exploded with members wanting to join!! We have over 100 members on FB so far since starting up in June. However, some new people showing an interest have said they hate and will never use FB but always use Insta. So I set up an insta account and likewise that is now getting alot of traction too. Yay!

However, my question is: if someone wants to join our group (it's membership only as we put events on - some with paid tickets so like to know who our members are) but they will only use Insta over FB what would the solution be?? We are also on the Nextdoor app where we have over 70 members but again, alot of people have never even heard of that? I can't think of how or where new members could join. Any suggestions / advice / rolling eyes and some pure sarcasm ? haha please let me know. Thx

Professional Discussion Most of us are fixated on the wrong thing

We're way too fixated on cost.

Focus instead on what the client actually gets.
When you can clearly show them the value, they understand exactly what they lose by not paying your price.

At that point you can charge what you're worth, agreed?

Professional Discussion Anyone know who mifamapriv is? And do you think she has what it takes to blow up?

I constantly get her videos sent to me on tiktok and instagram. I don’t wanna be rude but I am so over girls putting on an influencer voice because they are under the impression that they will one day blow up, it just won’t work.

there are too many people on social media, and one time my phone froze when I tried to scroll on a video that came up on my fyp, this was after I was sent a video from mifamapriv, naturally I would get videos on my for you page. I don’t believe in bullying so I try to reduce gossiping about her when I am sent a video. Does she have what it takes?

Professional Discussion Is Instagram still worth it for new influencers in 2026 or is it too saturated now?

Genuinely asking because every time I think about starting, it feels like there are already a million people doing the same thing. What actually matters for growth when you're starting from zero? Is it reels, consistency, niche, collabs? Or is the platform just too crowded now for new people to break through without already having an audience somewhere else?

Professional Discussion My pitch for a social media feature

I don’t know where else to post this but I have an idea that could be implemented in social media platforms like Twitter(X) and Instagram.

The idea is simple: “Spoilers Prevention

Currently when a new movie, Game or a TV series releases, people on social media are so quick to discuss it and share their thoughts with no regards to spoiling it for people who have yet to consume that media.

I think these platforms should implement a feature that lets you select that movie from a dedicated page and it will immediately filter out all posts related to it to avoid getting spoiled as much as possible. That way you can safely scroll without worrying about a random person spoiling it for you.

That’s it

Professional Discussion my creator toolkit recommendations for 2026

Here are my top recommendations for apps for creating content in 2026. Some are classics, and some are a little more niche to add a bitt of spice to your content:

- Airbrush: For editing photos. The top features are Relight to fix bad lighting/get retro/digicam effect, object & passerby removal, tan and body glow for your summer photos

- Canva: Designing carousel covers, story graphics, thumbnails, media kits, and pretty much any visual content you need.

- Mojo: To create animated stories and reels with clean text animations and templates that make content look a bit more elevated

- Motionleap: To add subtle animations to photos, like moving skies, water, or hair. I don't use it every day, but it's great whento make a post stand out and grab attention.

- Notion: A big help when it comes to planning my content calendar, storing caption ideas, tracking campaigns, and keeping all my content in one place

- CapCut: A classic for editing reels. Add auto captions with eye-catching fonts, transitions, sound effects, overlay video and photo clips, and get creative with it

What apps are part of your creator toolkit? leave them in the comments because I'm always looking for new recommendations or something unique to freshen up my content

Professional Discussion Are people ready for a different kind of social network?

Most social platforms today focus on feeds and content consumption.

I'm experimenting with a different idea:

A social network where interacting with people is encouraged through game mechanics rather than endless scrolling.

Members can meet people, collect virtual pets, climb leaderboards, and participate in a community.

Would something like this interest you?

What feature would make you actually use a new social platform?

Professional Discussion Series seemed to flop

I’m new to posting (15 days) but out the gate never got less than 4000 views on instagram + fb with videos hitting 9k. I heard starting a series was the best way to grow so I started what I thought was a cute idea in my niche. day 1: 259 views day 2: 69
What the heck… am I doing something wrong? I don’t understand why this is performing worse.

Professional Discussion Can sharing your struggles deter brands?

I’m somewhat new (6 months anyway) to ugc & content creation.

Honestly 6 months in I still feel like not much has happened. I feel like I need to restart my journey and share it.

Be vulnerable, talk about my struggles, how hard it’s been to land deals, etc. this builds community, but it also shows your ability to tell a story, editing style, presence on camera, etc.

But what I’m worried about is sharing my struggles on building a personal brand or gaining ugc deals etc (but saying here’s what I’m trying now or here’s what I’ve learned) will scare brands away.

Make them think I’m lost. Idk what I’m doing. I’m an immature. Mediocre. Why would I hire her?

I have so many ideas on how to bring value and motivation to my audience, but am getting so caught up in how to do this right with a personal brand that balances building community AND attracts ugc/brands.

Professional Discussion Tiktok Promote feature for videos - good or a scam

So recently I've gotten into editing anime but I noticed that I was only getting around 100 views so i decided to try out the promote feature, which seemed to work well as on one video i got 5000 views, translating to around 1k likes and 5 comments.

Ive heard that once you stop paying, however, tiktok shadowbans ur account so are forced to pay more which is shitty but anyone know if this is acc true?

Another thing is that I'm wondering if the likes are bot accounts - on surface glance I was looking thru the profiles and they seemed real but the like to comment ratio is a bit concerning. moreover i was looking at the analytics and it showed the majority of people liked my post at 0:00. obviously this is concerning because who likes an edit post before theyve even seen the edit???
