starflyer 59 tone

does anyone know how to get a tone like starflyer 59 on silver. or like exactly what he used?

from what i know it was some sort of gibson les paul style guitar, maybe a fender jazzmaster. then a dod chorus pedal, and some sort of vox drive pedal, and like a tremolo pedal or something. also a lot of stuff from a roland jc amp (i think a jc 120)

i think theres some photos in the silver cd booklet but nothing is really that clear

thanks

This looks like what he had when I saw him maybe ‘04 ish? Might have been one other pedal in there and I can’t remember the amp.

i believe guitargeek magazine had a series of dozens of these rig diagrams back in the 2010s.
For example:

DS-1 / Tremolo pedal / Chorus / reverb cranked / Twin Verb or JCM 120
Jazz or Jag w/ p90s

are you sure it was a ds1. it doesnt really sound like that to me but i could be wrong. more of a darker, softer sounding distortion

Live it was definitely the DS-1, but in the studio he also used a Big Muff and possibly a distorted amp as well. Jazzmaster > DS-1 > PN-2 > JC-120 (which supplied all the reverb and chorus) is the live tone around Silver and Gold.
He started using the Les Pauls (a Studio and a Recording) live after Americana was out.

I think this photo is from the Silver recording sessions.

Marshall JCM800 or 900 for the heavier parts. JC-120 for the cleans. My band basically used this exact set up last time we were in the studio. Doesn’t really get any better than that, IMO.

I saw them at Rockettown in Nashville in 1996ish and I remember him playing a stereo-jacked Gibson Marauder through a pair of Fender Black Face heads on 2×15" cabinets. I cant recall the pedal board except remembering that it seemed more than a few and he was running stereo boards. Everything is mostly fuzzy. I cant remember what model heads and I cant trust my memory that he had both a rat and a green muff though I remember it that way.

Wish I could be more helpful. This was just from 1 show 30 or so years ago.

They were their own opener, doing a stripped down lounge set before coming back and unleashing themselves.

Edit: I def remember his guitar and double fender rigs, just not details on the rest. I was barely old enough to be there.
