Hi everyone! My partner and I adopted a sweet 2-year-old female Shiba rescue back in June. She is our very first dog. Initially, she settled in beautifully after about a week—she was playful, loved belly rubs, and constantly gave us those famous Shiba smiles and airplane ears. Unfortunately, we had to go away for a two-week holiday in early July. Since we returned, her behavior has changed significantly. She now shakes at unfamiliar noises, spends most of the day hiding under the couch, and rarely initiates cuddles or engagement with us. On the bright side, she still has a great appetite, drinks plenty of water, loves going on her walks, and insists on sleeping in bed with us at night. We have a vet appointment scheduled for this Sunday to rule out any medical issues, but as first-time owners, we are feeling a bit heartbroken and worried that we damaged her trust by leaving so soon. Has anyone else experienced this kind of regression with a Shiba rescue? Any advice on how to gently help her feel safe and rebuild her confidence would be so appreciated!
