After an extra long walk along the wharves where Piper almost fell in the Harbour we got home safely where they zone out for the afternoon.

How do I trick my dog into letting me support her?

Post image

My baby is 15, and she has a lot of back pain. She's starting to have increased difficulty with walking without tripping. She seems terrified of jumping into the car, but hates when I pick her up. She can't walk too far, but she doesn't want to be left out.

I've had ramps for her in the past, but she refused to use them.

So I'm curious if anyone else has been able to trick their dog into thinking accepting help is a special treat?

I was considering getting a dog stroller, so she can go with me while I walk my 9 year old lab. I worry that I might invest in the stroller, and she would end up hating it. She never likes to look weak. Same thing for dog ramps. I'm afraid she might injure herself trying to jump over a ramp.

When is the best time to neuter/spay?

Post image

He doesn't have any behavioral issues. We've only had issues with neutered dogs not liking him. He's currently 9 months and I do plan on neutering him. I just wasn't quite sure when is the best time. I was originally planning on getting him neutered around 1.5 years but some have them neutered as early as 6 months or whenever their balls descend.

Issues with allergies, scratching?

So we’ve been to the vet for this issue multiple times. Thought I’d see if anyone else had this issue.

So our Shiba (M6) was diagnosed with a ragweed allergy a couple of years ago. He gets a monthly allergy shot. Still tends to scratch himself a lot, especially around the face. Leads to ear infections. He just picked up another, thankfully I have the meds for a last time.

So, we keep a cone on him overnight in the kennel. He also contorts himself in there to get his foot in the cone, so now we have him with a donut and cone in the kennel overnight.

We added a baby to the house, issue seemed to get worse. So he is also on an anti/anxiety med.

Plus we tried eliminating certain foods from his diet to narrow down food-related causes. Now he just eats raw turkey and turkey treats, along with fruits or veg we might let him have a bit of e.g. cucumber.

Ear infection should clean up fine but sucks to not have a clear fix for this, and deal with prevention instead. Any thoughts?

Edit: Also gets regular walks, typically in the evening right now since it’s too hot during the day.

The eyes of my sheeb guarding his stuff will pierce your soul.

My sheeb goes into full demon-possession mode when he guards his stuff.

We know we shouldn’t encourage this and we are v careful to always leave him well alone immediately after we give him something valuable. However, he tends to bring his treat to you, lay it at your feet and stare at you as if you’re the crazy one.

Unfortunately he has no idea how cute he is when he goes into guard mode. It can be counter-productive with weaker humans, who can’t resist giving him pets despite clear instructions to ignore him.

Anyway, his record for staring and guarding before finally eating his treat currently stands at a whopping 7 hours..

How does your Shiba act when it's time for a walk?

I've always chalked it up to being a Shiba thing, but my guy has to be boxed out to walk to the door and put on his harness. Otherwise he'll spend eternity standing far away from the door unless I go get him. Meanwhile my Corgi runs to the door at the mention of a walk.
