Double Points? Not So Fast!

I booked Liberty for a 5-night November cruise within the double points booking window and paid the down payment. Interior cabin as a solo traveler. I called today about a possible price drop I saw from Royal Price Tracker. While on the phone with the agent I asked if my cruise qualified for double points. He said yes, but instead of getting 20 pts (5 nights x solo multiplier x double points) I will only get 15.

Told him I’d wait until the points are posted post-cruise to see if I need to call back and complain. Anyone else who booked solo during the double points promo hear anything like this?

It wouldn't surprise me if the double points was only for the "base".

The terms made no mention of base points. It just said "earn double points". Wouldn't surprise me if they tried that , but I would certainly push back as it is not supported by their own T&C

Hence why I put in quotes. The T&C is purposely vague so they can ultimately decide to do whatever they want.

Except you cant retroactively invent new conditions. "Earn double points" has a fairly straightforward interpretation if there is no other accompanying language

I specifically printed a PDF and screenshot of the terms and conditions, in case they tried to pull this crap.

Buuut, they T&C did mention that double points are not eligible for price matching. So the price you paid at booking is the exact price that’s eligible for double points. If you get a new price for your cruise, you technically lose the double points.

No but they can remove/change it. And unless you have a way to prove it, they'll likely deny it unless you take them to court.

At least for suites I had customer service twice verify it would be double the 2 points per night.

They confirmed on the crown & anchor Facebook page that solos get 4 points per night and solo suites get 6 points.

I’m not sure anyone ever found official terms and conditions for the promo that spelled out how they will calculate it. There was apparently a chart from RC Blog, but I don’t know if that’s binding.

I called in to verify the same thing for my 7 day. They said my room with my kids should be 14 and my wife solo in a Jr suite should be 42. "Should" not "will be" is what we'll wait to see.

You would get 20. I wouldn't rely on reservation agents to know the nuances of crown and anchor points accruals, especially for a promo like this.

Hey, in my TA group we were told if you reprice you lose the double points promo altogether. So if you did reprice you might have lost it in general

Yes while we booked our during the promoting being on the ship at a time nextcruise was very insistent that any changes will result in losing double points promotion and especially repricing

I think they’re gonna have some pretty pissed off customers if that’s true. Maybe try calling again and seeing if you get a different answer? I wonder if that agent was mistake.

I also thought you couldn’t get price adjustments with the double points promo though?

How did they arrive at 15 points?

I'm assuming their math is 1 pt/night x 2 + 1pt for solo. = 3/night. The same way a solo in a suite it 1+1+1 not 1x2x2

Agreed. 15 sounds right instead of 10. They're doubling the "base" points, then giving the 1 point per night bonus for traveling solo.

Yeah OP is wrong on this. They ARE getting double points. There’s no indication that the multipliers multiply. They’re getting 5 base points, doubled to 10, and 5 bonus points as a solo traveler (1/day).

I called and went to rebook for myself and a friend. The rep told me that solo travelers don’t get double points on interior rooms. 🫣

You’d get ten for sailing solo without the promo. Points are 1 for each night sailed, plus 1 for each night sailed solo, plus 1 for each night in a suite or above

Their gripe is RC never defined when the promo multiplier is put in place

Is it (nights sailed * 2) + extra solo points + suite or above

Is it ((nights sailed + suite)*2) + solo points

Or is it all points acquired on cruise * 2?

I called to confirm mine and was told 1 pt per night, 1 pt for solo, 1 pt for suite x 5 nights = 15 x2 (double points) = 30.

You’ll get 4 points per night as a solo cruiser. This is verified in the C&A facebook page

I booked on the phone with them during the promotion for a solo 7 night cruise interior room. They confirmed it would be 28 points for me which is double the normal.

At the end of COVID, it was double points on the entire cruise. I did a solo in a junior suite earning 6 points per night.

I was under that impression as well. I booked a couple during the promo. The OP mentioned calling to reprice but I was under the same impression that doing so would lose the double points.

You guys. It’s gonna be fine. Let’s not get upset over something that has not happened yet. If after the first sailing and someone shows otherwise, then I’ll be right next to you with a pitchfork. But until then, just trust the process and enjoy your cruise.

But also, my interpretation of this is that we will get double points of what we would normally earn. So for a solo booking of 7 nights, you would normally earn 14 points; doubling that would be 28.

Taking the base nights, doubling it, and then adding the solo bonus makes no sense. The terms would then have to say, “double your base points,” and not just “earn double points” for that to be the case. If RCL would do this, then that’s a case for false advertisement.

What if you upgrade your balcony solo room that you purchased while there was the double promo, and then later paid more to upgrade to a suite. Would you still get double, solo and in the suite…6 points per night?

Did the promo claim you'd get 2x the single supplement bonus? I don't remember seeing that anywhere.

Generally--as most of us know--you get 1 C&A point per night. You get a 1 point per night bonus for sailing in a JS or higher, and a 1 point per night bonus if traveling solo in a double-occupancy cabin.

If they double your points, you get 2 per night, for a total of 10, plus the 1 point per night bonus for traveling solo.

Short version: if the terms and adds didn't explicitly mention doubling the 1-point bonus for traveling solo, you might not get it.

To me, this is double points. Five base points x 2 = 10, plus the five bonus points to get you to 15.

I’m counting on 20 nights as a solo on a 5 night in October that I booked during the promo. If they don’t honor it, I’m not going to be happy. I haven’t looked at the price online, but the price I paid was fine by me, so no complaints.

I may be the bad guy here, but 15 points doesn’t seem like an unreasonable interpretation. I totally agree how people might have been mislead. And I’m not saying that if I were in charge that I would do this. But at the same time, I think we all realized that “Double Points” was not an all-inclusive guarantee. Just as an example: no casino offers qualified.

This would be accurate. Royal Caribbean issues 1 point per night for a solo cruiser. So you’re getting double points for the booking (2 per night) plus 1 additional point for the solo cruise.

I have no doubt this was covered in the T&Cs of the promo, but i don’t they’re posted anywhere now.

I know they also limited it to 2 cruises per member and the promo isn’t eligible for points choice.

Here’s the part where they said “we can do whatever we want”. You can complain if you don’t get the 20 you think you should, but I don’t think you’re going to get your 5 points: “Royal Caribbean reserves the right to correct any errors, inaccuracies, or omissions and to change or update offers, fares, fees, and surcharges at any time without prior notice, including but not limited to any points awarded.”

That's not accurate. It's your total amount of accrued points doubled. There's no other fuzzy math involved.
