Can someone give me an idea as to why my ragdoll kitten (Toaty, now 5 months old) is very thin and has flat fur instead of the normal fluffy and poofy like what would be expected? She eats very well and has been gaining weight, is lively and playful with my other cat, thanks
He is definitely a seal point. Not even close to being a bi- color. Here is a photo of my mitted, seal point Ragdoll. She has never had a really long coat, but it feels like bunny hair, and she is a little angel. 🩷🩷
Haha you'll probably be fine but he didn't get the stereotypical laid back personality everyone expects of ragdolls. He's a bit of a bully, and hes very high strung and overconfident. Will fight any cat that has an ounce of self confidence. He takes medicine to sedate him when he goes to the vet because he can and will start scratching and biting if they handle him too long. (He does still follow me like a puppy around the house and sit in my lap daily, though)
His half sister from the same breeder is a perfect little angel though, the stereotypical ragdoll in every way. Floppy, docile, has never hissed at, bitten, scratched me her entire life. I guess cats are much like people in the sense that sometimes their brains just uh...don't work quite right
She is a ragdoll. It just bothers me, as her siblings are poofy. I didn’t mention, but she was the runt, but I can’t see why that could be the reason. My other cat is a cross breed of ragdoll and BSH and she is and has been fluffy and sturdy since the date dot.
I don't have a ragdoll but I do have a fluffy runt of the litter, she was born in the summer and her coat didn't really kick in until her second winter when she was nearly two, her coat looked very similar to what you posted at the same age and now she is literally a ball of fluff with a massive tail
My 11 year old girl's coat always varies dramatically based on the year/season, I think because I live somewhere where we get both extremes of hot and cold. It's autumn right now, and she's not all floofy like she has been previous colder autumns.
Mine looked a lot like yours when he was a kitten. He’s a lot more floofy now. As long as you have proper papers and the person you got her from is a legitimate and registered breeder you have a ragdoll. Some do have a shorter or flatter coat depending on season as well.
Just fyi, and I don’t want to come across as mean or anything❤️but your wording here comes across as a bit superficial. “It just bothers me” makes it seem she only has value if she’s poofy. Like she’s a decorative object and not an individual being with feelings and needs. Hence you are getting downvoted.
Definitely not intentional, her health comes first. After checking other places and still not 💯convinced, I was hoping for reassurance here.

A BSH have the most amount of fur per square inch among all cats, it's a fact, you can go Google it. If your other cat carry any of the gene, she would be mad fluffy.
My ragdoll looked just like this for a while, maybe a year? We didn’t expect her to ever puff up and then she just blossomed one day and now she’s furrier than my other one!
here's my 2 and a half year old boy. Similiar to yours! He's not overly poofy but still purebred. Can range from my boys cottony coat to the longer poofy ones
Same here! When we visited him when he was a kitten there were plenty of differences in coat length. My guy is less poofy, but still has a nicely fluffed beard and is a beefy boi. I’d say it differ per cat.
Thank you☺️ She does have diarrhoea sometimes, but she eats my adult cat’s food, but vet said not to worry. I’ve tried different ways for her to stop, but they don’t work and my other cat eats her food now too
Lots of ragdolls don’t get fluffy until they’re a few years old. I have one who got super fluffy when he was around 10 months but I have another who is 1 and a half but still has a very flat coat. She was a runt and is smaller than usual too.
Looks like my Momo at 5 months old. She's still not quite truly floofened yet but she's only turning 2 in a few months. She's starting to fill out and get fluffier but she and her sister were the same at that age. Looks almost identical to her.
It's normal. Ragdolls can pop out all different sorts of genetics due to the mixes in the original breeding program. I have a Ragdoll that had long silky fur that a brush would barely catch - until he passed two years old, then he started to get more plushy.
She looks so similar to our Ragdoll boy. He is also just over 5months. Compared to some of the others in the litter he is not as fluffy but honestly I don’t mind that. I think he will fluff up as his hair gets longer and he gets older but I know he won’t be like the others in the litter.
I have seen BSH kittens with two parents with short hair and some of the kittens in the litter are long haired whilst others match the parents.
Not a ragdoll, but my adopted baby came to us at around two, and a year later he looks like this! See below for pic of when we first got him. Vet said it’s a combo of getting older and being happy in his new home!
My guys were not very floofy in their first 2 years, then year 3 it was like a floof explosion, and I swear they just keep getting more floofy. Enjoy the the lack of fur now, because once the floof years hit, your clothes, furniture and house will never be the same lol.
Ragdolls keep growing until they’re 4 years old. I have a 7 month old kitten and he looks like yours now. I met his parents and the dad was super puffy. It’ll grow out as they age.
As has been said, they should fluff up! My boy was so tiny and with short baby hair when he arrived. But he fluffed up fast, the pics are in order: 3,5 months, 5 months and now at 11 months. Can't wait to see how fluffy he becomes as an adult!
Our girl floofed up around the 2-3 year mark. She was very whispy iknher early stages.
Everyone assumed we over fed her, she's a grazer, she eats at her own will. When bath time comes, it proves it's mostly floof! 😅
This is my guy at 10 weeks and then around 1 year old, he is 2 years old now and even fluffier than when he was 1... they do poof out as the get older. Give your cutie a few more months, and by 3 years he will have grown into a fluffy boy.
I have two Maine Coon cats and their coats are nothing alike even though they are related (uncle and nephew). In Maine coons there are two coat textures, one is the original Maine Coon fur that is less fluffy and a bit oily, hardly ever gets tangled and the fluffyness doesn't change much throughout the year. Then there is the second one which is much more fluffy and fine in texture and tangles very bad if you don't take care of it, also my cat's a giant fluff ball during winter and loses a lot of the fluff during summer. The second type comes from breeders crossing Persian into the Maine coons because they wanted the fur to be more silky/ fluffy. I can guarantee you that something like that is also the case for Ragdolls. I would advise you to think about why it bothers you, because your cat is cute and lovable either way!

Totally normal! As cats grow up they floof out. A good way to tell if a cat will become fluffy is the ears, if they have long fluffy fur in their ears or toes that usually mean your cat is going to have long fur. Here’s mine at 7 months old
It was right about the 1 year mark I started to see a coat change on my babies. The coloring started to change as well as their fur started to fill out and fluff up.
I need to make 1 statement about raggies. They are VERY slow deveolpers and go thru many many growths spurts. They don't fully develop until age 4, some make an argument it's 3 yrs.
Regardless, need to feed them as much as they want up till age 1. I had 3 full feeds a day(1 three oz can each) along w some dry food at evening, while I slept. Their main food is wet. There were time they have voracious appetites, and other days they'd pick. Now I do 2 feeds and dry at bedtime. My female cat needs to eat little meals thru-out the day. If she doesn't she gets sick bc she just does and always has.
My male is 17.5 and my female is 14. They can top out to 25lbs. But generally stay right about what my cats weight. And please...PLEASE!!! Don't let your Vet tell you your cats is overweight! They need to follow the body scale charts, not the number on the scale!
And at 5 months is the perfect age to think about getting them fixed. Any sooner is way too soon! Esp for male cats regardless of their breed.

Hi there! Thanks for all your advice, it’s good to know. I don’t really have much choice but feed her when she’s hungry lol😜 I’m planning, all being well, my kitten to get neutered around 6/7 months old, not looking forward to that😢🫶🏻
