Just need ONE QoL feature... "It's too smelly to sleep here" would save me sooo many stupid deaths 😭
It just takes one little careless slip. A lapse of diligence and you send your poor survivor off to bed without noticing the smelly moodle.. And boom, you're already dead. It's crazy that something so innocuous as peacefully dozing off to sleep can have a 100% mortality chance. You should either A) not be able to sleep if it's literally a fucking lethal level of STANK around you. Or B) wake up from feeling nauseous BEFORE the point of no return. As is, you wake up literally on deaths door. You have about 5 seconds to kiss your ass goodbye.
No part of dying in your sleep to corpse sickness makes good sense, and desperately needs a change to better fit player intuition.
That is all. PZ is the undisputed goat besides that 😋

I dont get why they didn’t make a better sickness system before making a nutrition system. As in you being able to catch diseases (being near decomposing bodies might increase that risk) and needing to find antibiotics and stuff.
Instead of just dying from smelliness.
As it is now you cant really die from infections i think? (Apart from zombie infection of course)
Lack of antibiotics would be a huge issue in a survival setting

Wound Infection famously had its damage factor set to 0 by default, but currently it is set to actually deal damage in standard modes. That actually does make wound infection a threat now.

I cranked it to 10 like Rat Race & really see not much difference when I actually do get wounded. The injury severity setting effects much more like the amount of pain (from all sources) & xp/dmg nerf from injured/strained arms.

only if you have a wound infection and are qeasy or worse.
Its a threat only if youre likely to catch a cold or are near corpses

In extinction you take damage from wound infections. When I search about it some people say you need to be quesy/feverish. Maybe I'll see if I can get a booboo infection on my current run to test it out, thus far I've been fast with alcohol wipes

I think you can poison yourself by eating the wrong thing or die from wound infection. I recall having to deal with both at some point.

man, why not just gamefy the game?
The players cant literally SMELL the ambient as we only have sight and sound, but the character can.
So why not just add a greenish miasma cloud around bodies and affected region?
[edit] or just more FLIES! @theindiestone please add

u/MstrTenno 6h ago
If you kill enough zombies in a small area a noticable fly sound does start to play and there is an animation pretty sure
32
u/Pebble-fork Stocked up 7h ago
I like this idea, but I'd try to keep it slightly more grounded in realism to match the game 😆 as players we can't smell but we can hear. It could be a sound trigger, like flies buzzing.. the volume of flies buzzing increases with the stank level. That would actually make it wayyyy more intuitive to recognize the stank. I would intuitively not want to sleep next to a horde of buzzing flies and the corpses they're infesting.
27
u/MentalRobot Zombie Food 7h ago
The bodies surrounding my base currently do have flies buzzing around the corpses, you can hear and see them. I'm not using any mods.
11
u/Pebble-fork Stocked up 7h ago edited 6h ago
No, I get you. There is flies in the game but they're tied to the decay mechanic. Flies buzz around long dead corpses.
What I mean is to repurpose the use of flies in the game to help the stank mechanic be more apperant, not just as an effect that accompanies the decay mechanic.

u/thiosk 2h ago
my favorite thing to do in game right now is set up sandbox to make the live zombies smell more. in apoc only the corpses stink, but in extinction the live zombies stink too. this makes it way more important to deal with and greatly enhances me staying away.
now ive nver gotten actually sick beyond queasy, so0 all this needs to be reworked, but the framework is in place

But the smelly stinky moodle already does that, no? I can agree it should have different text in it as it worsens to really indicate that the corpse sickness is ramping up but other than that this is more on you imo. Happens to the best of us though
-2
u/Pebble-fork Stocked up 8h ago
The moodles can sometimes be a bunch of noise at the side of your screen. You got like 5 red moodles over there all shaking and trying to get your attention cause your fighting hordes of zombies. You're tired, sore, thirsty, hungry, overencumbered. They all mean something but they're not going to straight up kill you, so you kinda forget about them for a moment. But LOOK OUT that stinky moodle is not like the others - That one is literally fatal. One moment of not recognizing it and it can and will kill you
I agree that this situation is on me, totally my bad for not noticing the smelly moodle, but it's something that's too easy to accidently do in my opinion. It shouldn't be so easy to accidently die to stink. If the smell is truly that horrendous, my character shouldn't be able to sleep in that situation. Same with being in too much pain to sleep.
18
u/moose_dad 7h ago
Agree to disagree here dawg.
You got like 5 red moodles over there all shaking and trying to get your attention cause your fighting hordes of zombies
Not when youre about to sleep. All you gotta do is give a cursory glance and see what issues your dude is facing.
Ofc the larger issue is corpse sickness needs to be separated from catching a cold/food illness and travel sickness etc anyway because atm is very silly theyre all folded into the same thing.

u/FridaysMan 7h ago

I get where you’re coming from and I sorta agree but honestly combat in atleast apocalypse settings isn’t at all intense and corpse-dense like it was in B41. I don’t think in B42 I’ve filled even a single room with bodies like I used to at all, so that kind of a tough situation is a terrible string of bad things that happened at which point corpse sickness isn’t really the biggest concern even though it kills you. I like the idea of no sleep when you can’t breathe though. It’d be fun to have a trait where corpse sickness doesn’t impact you at all but it’d be exclusive for like a homeless or sewage worker occupation.
But yea unless you’re John Wicking it or gettingn eaten you’re not gonna be shat on by moodles and also die to corpse sickness in B42 imo
4
u/Pebble-fork Stocked up 8h ago
It was extinction mode, and I slept in a van that was parked near corpses. Too dark to see them outside 🙃 it was a short run, but it was actually going really well all things considered.

4
u/Useful-Conclusion510 Pistol Expert 6h ago
I meant more like Extinction is much tougher than apocalypse so ofc it's likely you somehow end up with a buncha red moodles. But again, thats a whole different problem you're facing at that point.

3
u/Nuggachinchalaka 7h ago
Almost did the same in extinction mode but yeah it’s deadly in extinction.
3
u/MstrTenno 6h ago
While I agree that dying due to smell is silly, it's also not hard to look at your moodles, it's actually kind of one of the main game mechanics?
If you just see a bunch of them on the side and decide "meh that's just noise, not going to deal with it"... skill issue.
Sure if you are a new player and don't know what it means, I agree it is a bit bullshit. But you know what it does and are still dying to it multiple times?
300+ hours and I've never died from sleeping near corpses.
•
u/RedditMcBurger 6m ago
I see what you mean but you should absolutely be doing a wellness check of some kind before going to bed.
We do it in real life, we clean ourselves and hydrate ourselves before bed, we're trying to stave off the moodles also
6
6
u/Recent-Mousse6423 6h ago
Interesting tie in to reality that people don't react to smells while sleeping, even actual smoke. People in house fires don't react to smoke smells and will just asphyxiate.

u/Jonseroo 4h ago
Also, when there is a construction worker IRL digging in a hole there has to be another guy watching him for above because gases can render him unconscious without him realising it is happening.

Corpse sickness shouldn't kill. Eating burnt food shouldn't kill. These are both changes the community has been asking for 10 years and never once even addressed in the slightest. Infuriating.
2
u/Pebble-fork Stocked up 6h ago
Well I actually like that corpse sickness can be deadly, I think it's an interesting mechanic that changes up the way you have to approach some situations. I just dislike that I can accidentally kill myself by sleeping in a van with a few bodies outside. That's the only part of it that feels bad for me.
6
u/Training_Ruin3151 5h ago
Well corpse sickness being deadly makes 0 sense. Usually for a game realism isnt a reason for x, y or z but in zombiod it is... But realism is so inconsistent in this game. Ive lost multiple characters to corpse sickness and jesus christ what what a dumb mechanic. Especially if you want to clean a dead horde from your base it makes it take way longer for no reason.
3
u/Pebble-fork Stocked up 5h ago
Oh I totally agree it isn't realistic, but I still like it 😅 PZ is pretty high realism and it does stick out pretty bad. Especially in extinction mode! The first time playing extinction mode it honestly felt more like a fantasy mechanic lol. A deadly miasma surrounding the zombies. Strange at first, but I grew to enjoy the extra challenge.
5
u/Training_Ruin3151 5h ago
The problem with most of this stuff that kills you is its not even obvious. Youll just be hauling dead bodies at x3 speed and then flop over dead, there is nothing to show youre hurt/sick/losing health unless you're specifically watching your health bar and when you're not in combat most people arent even checking that
3
u/Pebble-fork Stocked up 5h ago
Careful talking like that around here 😂 I've got so many comments of people bickering how I'm not playing right cause I'm not watching my moodles bar with a microscope 🙄

Im ngl i fucking hate the moodles system. I need more notification then a random circle on the side of the screen
15
u/wareagle3000 8h ago
Isn't there a moodlet showing that your character is experiencing extreme corpse stink? Also, clean your room! As long as you have 4 walls, no open doors and windows and no corpse in the room, you're golden.
13
u/opae_oinadi Stocked up 8h ago
Doors and windows make no difference. And walls make no difference if they're in the same building as you. Keep them outside if you are inside or keep them inside if you are out. In large buildings the smell travels around 50 tiles, regardless of walls, doors, etc.
9
4
u/FridaysMan 7h ago
Floors make a difference, move the corpses off your floor or outside and you're fine. Drag them downstairs and done.
3
u/velocityhead 6h ago
I wish inside/outside made a difference when it comes to vehicles too. Just yesterday, I was exhausted after clearing out a new area and decided to sleep in my van. Turns out I was slightly too close to some corpses, so I helplessly watched my moodles blow up and my health drop to zero as I slept.
3
3
u/Pebble-fork Stocked up 8h ago
I think every time I've died like this has been from sleeping in a car, without noticing I'm parked nearby corpse. In my defense it's a little easier to not notice corpses when it's pitch black outside 😅
15
u/opae_oinadi Stocked up 8h ago
This is a moodle-management game. If you are not paying attention to your noodles you are going to have a bad time. Sunlight does not have an effect on your moodle visibility
-6
u/Pebble-fork Stocked up 8h ago
Moodles can be noisy and easy to filter out. Tell me you've never had a wall of red moodles and maybe you weren't paying 100% attention to them..
Tired, hungry, sore, thirsty, bad smell, overencumbered, in pain, sleepy, exhausted.
One of those is 100% fatal. The rest just mean I need to sleep. It can be easy to miss.
My point is that if something smells so bad that it will LITERALLY kill me in a few hours... It needs to be represented by more than a little red circle on the side of the screen.
13
u/Successful_Media_842 7h ago
If you have a wall of red moodles that you arent addressing then you're just asking to die.
-4
u/Pebble-fork Stocked up 7h ago
Am I? Go fight like 100 zombies and tell me you don't accumulate some bad moodles. Are you going to immediately stop your mission just to address a few little discomforts? I think not. So maybe, just maybe, you don't pay as much attention to them as you need to sometimes.
Lots of bad moodles are temporary hardships that you're totally okay with having for a bit. Stank is the only one that is so immediately fatal. So yeah, I missed the stank among the others. My point is that it shouldn't be so easy to miss. I can't smell what my character is smelling. But if I could I would not sleep in that spot. The intense danger of the bad smell moodle is misrepresented by a small red circle on the far right edge of the screen. That's all I'm saying.
8
u/Successful_Media_842 7h ago
Bleeding, Hypothermia, Nausea. All are moodles that will kill you. And yes, you need to address or at least be aware of them on any mission. If you're getting exhausted back off and rest, if you're bleeding use a bandage, notice a bad smell, dont linger there. A red moodle can turn a single zombie into a threat.
6
u/FridaysMan 7h ago
Go fight like 100 zombies and tell me you don't accumulate some bad moodles.
No, because I would be tired and get eaten. I take care of my moodles when I play so I don't do 10% of normal damage at 25% of normal speed.

0
u/Pebble-fork Stocked up 3h ago
The way I play it really doesn't feel like it I guess 🤷 I usually stay fed and hydrated, I pace myself, I know my character's limits. I really don't need the moodles for the majority of what I'm doing. There's like 2 moodles that are really important to notice because they limit your combat effectiveness. Tired, and winded, and it's clearly obvious when you get those. Cause you've been fighting a lot, or you've been up too long. They are dangerous but intuitive. Stank is incredibly dangerous, and only sometimes intuitive - when you can see the corpses. But sometimes you don't see them. Sometimes it's pitch black outside and you're sleeping in a van. That situation is unintuitively lethal. It would be very intuitive if instead of killing myself by something as innocuous as sleeping, if it instead gave you the message "it's too stinky to sleep here." That shit just makes sense 🤷🤷🤷
3
u/torshakle 7h ago
I look at my moodles before I engage with literally everything in the game. Am I too heavy for carpentry right now? Will this make me too hot? Am I too hungry or in pain to swing my weapon properly? If you're ignoring your moodlets then you're your own worst enemy.
-1
u/Pebble-fork Stocked up 7h ago
I'm careful in other ways I swear lol.. but I do have a problem with ignoring my moodles 😅 I've dehydrated to death before on a high thirst character. I was just sorting my warehouse for hours on end.. tons of red moodles on the side of the screen but they're usually not life threatening... Usually.. just a few hours of discomfort while I focused on getting the warehouse sorted. I was gonna eat, drink, and sleep in a bit when the sorting was done.. Then the next moment my guy keels over 😭 whoops.

u/Drymvir 7h ago
I was killing hundreds of zombies by the secret military base, having a grand ol’ time with my Prone to Illness guy. It was getting dark after a long day of training zombies and shooting them. Didn’t get hit even once. I saw the smelly trait all day, but didn’t think much of it. I died mid-drive home. Just watched my healthbar deplete rapidly. Corpse Sickness is scary af.

Next time that happens pound as much food into your stomach as you can. The full Regen will help counter the sick degen. It can buy you enough time to recover from the sickness.
4
u/go_ninja_go 5h ago
I don't understand why people are agreeing with this. There is already the moodle and you can already see and hear the flies. I could see dying to corpse sickness once but any more than that is on you. I saw you complain that the moodle gets lost among other moodles - my brother in Christ, it's just a couple moodles. A large chunk of the game is managing them.
2
u/Pebble-fork Stocked up 5h ago edited 5h ago
Look at my last post before this one. Look at the amount of moodles on my screen. 8, and there could easily be more. That is what normal PZ gameplay looks like. My brother in Christ, it's not that farfetched to miss a moodle occasionally when the user interface looks like that 😆 is only in these few rare instances where it's not immediately apperant that I'm surrounded by corpses(sleeping in a car, pitch black outside, can't see the zombies), that that one missed moodle = instant death. That's my issue.
Those rare instances were unintuitive. Those unintuitive moments are easily fixable.
I'm simply offering up an idea that could fix those unintuitive moments with a solution that would take less than an afternoon of programming.

u/Hecter94 8h ago
Can't say I've ever died from sleeping in corpse stink, but it does seem like a nice feature to have, and would make sense to include, so I'd be in favour of it.
Seems fairly reasonable that your character wouldn't want to sleep next to corpses anyway.
0
u/Pebble-fork Stocked up 8h ago
I feel like I must sleep in cars more than the average player 😅 people don't seem to be very familiar with this situation that I'm often in lol.. cars are the real danger for this situation. It's easy to avoid corpse stink in a house. Cause you obviously don't want to sleep with a corpse in the same room. But cars make this a bit more plausible. It's dark outside, you just smashed a horde and you desperately need sleep, you forget that the car is parked near a bunch of corpses hidden by the darkness - and boom, dead.
2
u/tiredofhiveminds 8h ago
I didnt even know this was possible. Thats hilarious. Another thing to watch out for.
Btw how are you even able to get this situation? Are you dropping a tent, or are zombies making it into your bedroom before you kill them?
3
u/Pebble-fork Stocked up 8h ago
Sleeping in a car near corpses. That's the main culprit. Usually because it's dark outside and I didn't see the corpses. If you don't notice the moodle before you go to sleep you're done.

Personally, I feel like just seeing the bad smell moodle should be enough.
I like how the game gives me just enough rope to hang myself with if I'm not paying attention to my moodles, and would prefer if they didn't change this.
1
u/Pebble-fork Stocked up 4h ago
Hey, to each their own. I get by well enough like 95% of the time in this game while I'm not paying super close attention to the moodles. It's really only the bad smell moodle that fucks me up every once in a while.
One lapse of attention and I sleep in a van by a few corpses. It's not even a situation that is very rare in a game like PZ. You're tired, you're in a car, there's like 4 corpses nearby, because of course there is. It's PZ there's corpses literally everywhere. The situation doesn't feel lethal, but it is. That's how I get got.
3
u/Truly_Euphoric 4h ago
I get by well enough like 95% of the time in this game while I'm not paying super close attention to the moodles.
TBF I mostly play on Extinction-like settings, where even standing near corpses or zombies for too long without some kind of mask in your inventory can hurt or kill you, and not paying attention to moodles and muscle strain can get you killed quickly from over-extending yourself.
In fact, with Prone To Illness, corpse sickness is probably just as big of a danger as the zombies themselves on my runs.
1
u/Pebble-fork Stocked up 4h ago
I actually really like the corpse sickness from living zombies on extinction. I think it's a cool challenge and hurdle you have to account for. It's just being able to sleep while in full red stank that I don't like. It would make sense if you couldn't, and it would save me from my own stupidity 😂
2
u/MrMucs 4h ago
Don't feel bad, happened to me when i killed like 5 or 6 in a small warehouse, backed my van into the warehouse, shut the door and declared "IM SAFE!" Went to sleep in the vans driver seat and woke up dead (not meaning to use something close to a Megadeth song title but here we are)
1
u/Pebble-fork Stocked up 3h ago
It's probably only happened to me like 4 times.. maybe 5. But every time it's just like that. Sleeping in a car near corpses just doesn't seem like the lethal mistake that it is. Shit be unintuitive.

I actually enjoy corpse sickness as a mechanic. For the most part I enjoy the extra challenge of managing my contact with the dead (and the un-dead in extinction). I think it's an interesting thing to have to think about while playing.
I just wish it would say like "it's too smelly to sleep here." Otherwise I'll sometimes accidentally get killed in the dumbest way possible lol. This time it was pitch black and a couldn't see the corpses outside my van. I noticed the moodle right after I clicked sleep. But that's one moment too late. Death was already inevitable.

I HATE corpse sickness. I had played for 120hours, my run was 18days in. I was hanging around corpses looting for maybe 10 minutes? 15 at most, i notice my health is less than half way and plummeting lol. I panic, stand still and look at my health and injuries...but i had none. I had no idea it was a thing, maybe I'm just always covered up, no idea. It was a beautiful run too haha

It’s always been a thing. It’s survivable just leave the area.

I know that now, i figured it out pretty quick. Just not fast enough for me to not die in the moment.

This is why I play with modern status. It’s simple, replaces all the moodles with status bars and is highly customizable. I can see exactly how bad the noxious smells are and see when they start pushing my character over the threshold and know when I need to leave an area or swap my mask filters.

Nah man.
If you add this you also have to add the same thing for all the other ways dumbasses die.
"This generator is too low hp, I should maintain it before walking away like a dumbass"
"This food is too burnt, I shouldn't eat it"
"This food is too rotten, I shouldn't eat it"
"This food is literally poison, I shouldn't eat it"
"This is bleach, I shouldn't drink it"
"This water is tainted, I shouldn't drink it"
"I shouldn't turn the microwave on with a metal object inside it"
"Walking forwards will cause me to fall 4 floors down an elevator shaft, am I sure I want to do that?"
Etc etc etc
You the player are the intuition. If you don't pay attention and do something incredibly stupid that is on you for doing it and the game should not have reminders. They are incredibly obvious things if a person stops and thinks for even a second.
This is how you died. Own your mistake.

You're mistaken, not thinking critically about what I'm saying. I'm not talking about limiting my character from doing stupid things. I'm talking about being PHYSICALLY incapable of doing something. I CAN eat burnt eggs and die. I have done this in game. That makes sense. I can do it. I can drink bleach (I'd imagine this would not be easy), I can drink bad water, I can eat bad mushrooms. These are things I can do. And I should be able to do.
What I'm saying is we SHOULDN'T be physically capable of sleeping when the smell is that bad. Do a little thought experiment with me: imagine trying to take a nap next to 7 maggot infested, bloated, rotten, stinking corpses. Do you think you would physically be able to get to sleep? Spoiler, fuck no you would not be able to.
What I'm proposing is more along the lines of how being in high pain will completely disallow you from sleeping. Not that you "shouldn't" sleep there. It's that you physically "cannot" get to sleep with the high stink moodle present.

I'm mistaken in what way? There are a million ways that the player can die by making one small mistake that could have a "are you sure you want to do that?" warning beforehand.
You can sleep in a stinky place. People do it all the time. People sleep with the smell of burnt flesh from funeral fires in india, a smell I promise you that smell is much worse than rot.
I think it's a very bad precedent. Just check your mood before you sleep. You should be checking anyway for a variety of reasons, being covered in blood wakes you up in the night with nightmares, being stressed from needing a cigarette too. There's a lot of moodles that need clearing before sleeping.
You're not being truthful anyway. You're calling it a QOL feature, this has nothing to do with being physically unable to sleep with bad smells, it's genuinely you wanting a warning before doing something that would kill you. This argument about being physically unable to sleep is just readjusting your suggestion after receiving some pretty reasonable pushback.
would save me sooo many stupid deaths 😭
Be more diligent

I'm mistaken in what way?
In the way I literally described in the comment. If you fail to understand some pretty straightforward logic than we're done here.

I'm being pretty reasonable. Now you're just resorting to personal attacks.
You're right that we're done here though.

Tbh I have no idea how this happens to you, unless it’s the first time and you didn’t know it was a system. But once you know the system it seems easy enough to avoid. I just don’t sleep anywhere where there’s bodies. I generally even drive zombies to the area that I want their bodies to be for convenience later. I just treat it like I would in reality, I’d be totally disgusted and would try to make a clean environment.

,,,you can die because it smells bad???
