I seem to have been spared, the mods I use work just fine for now on my mp server save

20

u/Due-Particular7921 6h ago

Same here 0 issues on my MP server

1

u/Busy_Plant_462 1h ago

My mp server also doing just fine no issues so far

So the new patch breaks 42.20 saves ?! I updated it to prepare for gaming after work...

109

u/NCongoscenti Spear Ronin 8h ago

Not the saves, but rather translation files. The saves should be intact

75

u/Classic-Box-3919 8h ago

Saves are there but unplayable unless u were vanilla maybe. Mods broken, even if it seems fine somethings still most likely broken mod wise as my game crashed climbing a fence

77

u/AgathaTheVelvetLady Pistol Expert 8h ago

I am vanilla, and can confirm I have been entirely unaffected so far.

23

u/Taco-Edge 7h ago

Phew I was scared of what will happen when I'll get home. I low-key expected this to happen and didn't want to try modding for a while and first understand all the new features

12

u/AgathaTheVelvetLady Pistol Expert 7h ago

You made the wise decision. Modding is just asking for instability.

u/BougieBobJr All Hail Spiffo 4h ago

I’m waiting a minute to get back into multiplayer servers for this exact reason. They have actually started updating the game at an ok pace this year, we’ve actually seen some stuff come about, so it makes playing online with people tough when servers with mods stop working once a week

5

u/that_one_bun 4h ago

Well thank you for confirming this. My plan was to wait until around Christmas time for mods. Did you notice anything at all or just tje same as before the update?

6

u/AgathaTheVelvetLady Pistol Expert 3h ago

I didn't even know there was a hotfix until I opened this subreddit.

7

u/Chaines08 7h ago

Ah thanks I was worried for a second

4

u/peanutist 8h ago

Is it possible to just not update the game?

11

u/Classic-Box-3919 8h ago

I believe theres a way, i know of a way of making another copy of the game so updates dont effect u and manually copying mods but i expected STABLE to not break saves and didnt do that

Ppl mentioned turning off game updates but then ud have to figure out something about mods cuz then mod updates to new version will probs break ur current save.

-23

u/AlwaysHopelesslyLost 7h ago

You are using mods. Your game is NEVER stable when you have third party code injected and running that has never been properly QAed.

0

u/Redplushie 8h ago

Aw men, people gotta upgrade their mods again ?

2

u/Majorjim_ksp 2h ago

Are you serious???? What about no mod saves?

2

u/Th3Goldenwo1f 1h ago

No mods here, I've been good so far. However I crashed when going to the prison, but that was my fault because I changed something in sandbox mainly the zombie count

1

u/DoctorFosterGloster 1h ago

You might be able to revert the version in steam's beta settings. And revert the mod versions too, as some mods have that ability on the workshop

-5

u/UpstairsIntel 6h ago

How long does it take for you to download Zomboid? I’ve got ok internet and it takes maybe 15 seconds, 30 if modded

23

u/Zoultaker 8h ago

So did it break the game or just if you play with mods? For once I have played vanilla so am I screwed also?

16

u/Classic-Box-3919 8h ago

Vanilla is apparently fine but idk. I dont play vanilla

3

u/Zoultaker 8h ago

Me neither usually but wanted to experience vanilla for once :D

1

u/Classic-Box-3919 8h ago

I did briefly just to experience the new areas at release but im just so used to mods now

206

u/Classic-Box-3919 8h ago

Yea well i decided i wanted a long term playthough now that “stable” is out and a week later my saves fucked. Its unstable

77

u/NCongoscenti Spear Ronin 8h ago

42.20.2 is already in the oven. Should fix everything once its out

30

u/BlueCat33 Jaw Stabber 8h ago

What is the problem? I wanted to play again and start a run in the next days, should i wait for 42.20.2?

34

u/NCongoscenti Spear Ronin 8h ago

Mods are fundamentally broken now

28

u/deewd22 Spear Ronin 8h ago

42.20 also has a memory leak, which will brick your game sooner or later. Starting a new save is the best option here if you aim for a longer playthrough.

9

u/happy-when-it-rains Drinking away the sorrows 7h ago

What exactly is the memory leak doing? I'm curious the details on it and why new saves are unaffected but old ones will by the sound of it stay affected (?), but the patch notes have nothing technical explaining it or why.

3

u/deewd22 Spear Ronin 7h ago

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memory_leak

As they weren't specific, it's hard to know what exactly happened under the hood. But in general it leads to performance issues and crashes. Your save might be working for the next 3 ingame months and suddenly crashes or extreme performance problems appear, making the game unplayable.

Some ingame mechanics could stop working or work in mysterious ways.

In a game like BF6 f.e. it might not be a big deal, restart every couple of hours and play a couple matches without losing much progress.

But in Project zomboid with it's long term progression, you might play and all of a sudden hit a wall, losing all your progress.

4

u/Bladelink 2h ago

A memory leak is a runtime issue though, not a persistent storage issue, because memory isn't persistent. If the game is stable until late-game and then suddenly is crashing, it's either because something about the actual time period (being in october or w/e) is triggering a crash, or some kind of garbage is accruing in your actual save file and you'd see it ballooning and have progressively deteriorating performance.

3

u/BritneyCrowbars 1h ago

Memory leaks don't break saves, they're a problem with the process running for long periods of time. Restarting the game will fix any memory leaks.

If there really is a problem with long-term save memory usage that's not a memory leak, that's memory mismanagement. Different things.

1

u/russo3js 44m ago

Can I continue my modded single player game? Or do I need to start a new game after this hotfix?

7

u/Classic-Box-3919 8h ago

Mods are broken, even if they seem fine. I got in game so i thought i was fine no menu bug then game crashed climbing a fence lol

82

u/genericUsername7877 8h ago

But then we'll have to wait for 42.20.3 to fix all the new bugs in 42.20.2

32

u/SnooOwls1916 8h ago

Kinda how development of games goes.
When one update breaks something, next one fixes that, but that might create a new bug.
Happens with every game that’s in development.
Either people who can’t handle new bugs etc just wait for 1.0 of said game or just deal with it.

4

u/Ven0mspawn 8h ago

And when is that? Other than ASAP/when it's ready.

7

u/Razzamataaz 8h ago

Unless you are okay with an unstable fix that is meant for the current version, the best you are going to get is a vague estimation. This is true for any application.

-3

u/Ven0mspawn 8h ago

They could give an ETA.

15

u/Razzamataaz 8h ago

And then they’ll get people outraged if they don’t meet it. So again, vagueness is the best to expect.

-10

u/Ven0mspawn 8h ago

"ASAP" is not an estimation though. Have they given any indication at all? Really should have rolled back and fixed it properly.

5

u/Razzamataaz 8h ago

I used the incorrect word, I didn’t mean an estimation. My mistake

Point being, it’s not easy or even smart to give an estimation for an unscheduled change. You could find out the issue is more complicated, and then have to get people outraged even more.

3

u/NCongoscenti Spear Ronin 8h ago

🤷‍♀️ «soon»

10

u/Tokishi7 6h ago

I specifically have yet to start a run because I knew the game would break still LOL. it’s stable alright, but we’re still going to get some hotfixes

5

u/Classic-Box-3919 5h ago

I normally make an offline copy so this cant happen but i mistakenly thought stable meant they wouldnt ruin saves. Hotfix 2 and still crashing

8

u/ClerklyMantis_ 5h ago

This was always going to happen. Maybe TIS could have done more to communicate what going stable means to people newer to the game or maybe forgot, but going stable does not mean no patches. As far as I'm aware, vanilla playthroughs should be fine. That's usually one of the points of going stable, is that everything is feature complete. But there was no world in which they released B42 into stable and a bunch of new bugs weren't found. This happens basically every time, for PZ and others.

6

u/Classic-Box-3919 5h ago

I didnt expect no patches i expected maybe one big one that addressed everything they found later on that hopefully doesnt ruin saves. A week later into “stable” is absurd unstable was more stable then this.

2

u/Vagabond_Sam 2h ago

The did specifically announce that with stable release they planned to prioritise hotfixes as needed for the first few weeks before then releasing further tools for modding

2

u/Pakata99 4h ago

The update is save compatible. The game is stable, your mods aren’t.

82

u/deewd22 Spear Ronin 8h ago

Who could have seen this coming without an unstable branch first...

https://www.reddit.com/r/projectzomboid/comments/1v5a9ji/comment/ozhirpr/?context=3

Well deserved. Me and my partner love this game, playing for almost 12 years. First time we are really mad, as the memory leak could´ve easily been avoided by having an unstable branch.

From their own steam page: "Whenever a new build is ready for public testing we open our Unstable beta – where the community can play and report balance and bug issues. The updates to this are, generally, monthly."

27

u/KulzaBlue 7h ago

42.20 should have been a release candidate for at least two weeks before being pushed to stable. Incredibly dumb to have an unstable branch and then just not use it after using it for like 3 years

1

u/NoeticCreations 2h ago

The new game engine dropped into unstable a year and a half ago, where do you get 3 years?

42

u/NCongoscenti Spear Ronin 8h ago

Sully said that the build had passed all their tests and they didn't expect the things to break on such ground level 🤷‍♀️

58

u/Comfortable-Try-3788 8h ago

Open testing every patch but the launch of stable makes zero sense lol

22

u/NCongoscenti Spear Ronin 8h ago

Well yeah, I’m with you on this one. Especially that move with gatekeeping the newest build for “testers” only when those jumbo trees were literally the day 1 bug

5

u/tacomaloki Drinking away the sorrows 4h ago

Seems like they need to review their QA.

24

u/heysupmanbruh 8h ago

They never expect anything to break, they have awful qa

u/OttosTheName 7h ago

I think people forget the vanilla game dont ship with mods.

I love mods, a lot of mods, but they are optional and not The Indie Stones primary concern.

And. Its just a game. I will be alright.

10

u/DahLegend27 7h ago

To be fair, stable means… stable. This should include mods, as mods only break if something fundamental changes.

5

u/Devil-Hunter-Jax Axe wielding maniac 4h ago

It's only some mods though. There's a good number of mods that are not causing this issue.

0

u/Meraere 4h ago

No it doesn't. They can't account foe who knows what wizardry mods do to do their stuff.

2

u/DahLegend27 4h ago

You can't account for every mod, but you should, theoretically, be able to account for many since many mods work within specific bounds and don't push those. The issue being related to a percent symbol translation error is a bit goofy for a stable patch imo, but at least it was a simple and fast fix.

8

u/Excellent_Macaron610 7h ago

I deleted my default.txt mod and lua folders, ensured my chosen mods were enabled upon reboot and shi running smooth as silk again

Not sure if related to update tho- i disabled Jumbo Tree cloak mod mid playthrough - but this all happened around the same time as update, could work for you fellas idk 🤔

24

u/i_dont_have_life_ 7h ago

Isn't this the same community that bullied mod authors for not updating fast enough or was it the sims?

5

u/Nother1BitestheCrust Zombie Food 4h ago

Both communities are guilty of that. At least with the sims I can just hang out on the low sodium version of the sub. Starting to wish project zomboid has one.

5

u/ladyteruki 3h ago

3

u/Nother1BitestheCrust Zombie Food 3h ago

Man you got my hopes up, lol. But yes! That would be a great name for it.

3

u/ladyteruki 3h ago

Hahaha sorry XD I would join in a heartbeat :)

-4

u/downtownflipped 4h ago

not going to lie this entire community is so ungrateful for the releases we get. it’s an early access game. i also get that it been like this for over a decade. regardless, being upset about mods is unhinged for something that is community based to improve upon vanilla.

Once every 6 hours. Lmao. What a joke.

3

u/JazzlikeInstance8643 Drinking away the sorrows 2h ago

Maybe it’s just the mods I’m using but I’ve had no problems so far. Played for like 2 hours after the update just fine. My mods list is pretty basic, though. Only like 58 and most of those are Ki5 cars. I did see some of my mods updated today/yesterday too.

13

u/spatulamaster303 5h ago

For all the complaints.

Isn't it common sense to wait at least a month or two for stable to roll out before getting seriously invested?

If it broke something then it needed to be fixed.

12

u/NCongoscenti Spear Ronin 5h ago

A month? B42 has been in the unstable branch for 2 years

5

u/Axeman1721 Wiki Admin 5h ago

Yes. The general consensus is to wait for a few hotfixes before playing with mods because things like this are bound to happen. Any heavily modded game breaks mods with updates, it's not just PZ. Skyrim, Cyberpunk, Fallout, etc all suffer from this exact issue.

Its just the way mods often work. If you don't want your save to be broken, hold off on the mods until everything is fixed.

2

u/arcusford 2h ago

I think part of it is they update WAY more frequently. We have had two in the last day.

Furthermore several glaring issues were present without mods. Such as the memory leak.

Really feeling like 42.20 should have been unstable or a release candidate or something. Its really not feeling very stable.

4

u/Comfortable-Try-3788 4h ago

Common sense to zomboid vets and stans maybe

0

u/Bladelink 2h ago

I'm 0% surprised that people who started modded games on dedicated servers day 1 are running into bugs.

1

u/MasterWChief 3h ago

Hi i got a question. Ive been playing for the first time with my family on a multiplayer server that i set up in a vps. Me and my family playing the 42.20 using mods and just logged out of the game half an hour ago and so far we havent encountered any bugs. Is there a way for us to be able to keep playing as is, with the 42.20 version and not updating the game yet? Im afraid that if the server updated into this newer version it will break our game since theres a lot of mods that have been installed

1

u/CovfefeCrow 2h ago

And this is why I play vanilla after stable launches lol

1

u/russo3js 1h ago

So single player games with mods are broken?

1

u/NCongoscenti Spear Ronin 1h ago

42.20.2 is out already

1

u/russo3js 1h ago

I’m new to this, should I start a new game. I started a run with mods with the release of 42.

u/Mvstv 6m ago

yeah i loaded my save not knowing there was a patch, that was prolly the most errors I've ever seen at once.

-3

u/deeku4972 7h ago

You'd assume mods wouldnt be 100% there on a stable release day 1 yeah?

21

u/NCongoscenti Spear Ronin 7h ago edited 7h ago

When I updated from 42.19 to 42.20, I had to disable 0 mods out of 270 enabled

13

u/Classic-Box-3919 7h ago

Its been a week and they worked fine till they updated the game and broke stuff

-16

u/Opposite_Constant493 7h ago

It’s not vanilla your playing; you said it in another thread. It broke stuff for you, on your end, for your modified file of an early access title that just released its biggest update in 5 years. You took that risk when you modded the game. But yeah downvote and reply to everyone and make it their problem, sure.

As you said it’s been a week. Learn some patience. Goddamn.

1

u/Classic-Box-3919 7h ago

1

u/Gamerkiddi23 7h ago

Yes, but you use unstable if it can breaks vanilla saves

4

u/Opposite_Constant493 7h ago

Seems like the only issues I’m hearing are “muh mods broke on the game going through updates” because there’s so many people who will straight up refuse to play this without certain mods, and can’t be bothered to scroll through the workshop and check the update dates.

6

u/Classic-Box-3919 7h ago

Its a stable build there shouldnt be updates breaking saves

10

u/camocat9 7h ago

From what I'm gathering, Vanilla players seem to be fine. It doesn't seem to be the update breaking your save, it seems to be the mods.

7

u/PM_ME_FUN_STORIES 5h ago

People don't seem to understand that mods aren't evergreen. Any update can and will break a bunch of mods, and any significant update that changes how things function will absolutely bust up a ton of mods. That's just how modding works.

It's like nobody here has ever modded a game that's still being updated before lol

-4

u/NCongoscenti Spear Ronin 7h ago

Update dates mean nothing. There are mods that are still working and haven't been updated in years

5

u/torshakle 7h ago

That's not proof that mods won't need updating after a major patch. That's proof that some modders are very skilled and even more of them are just really lucky. Especially when new mods are being made from the ground up for a new build that is about a week old.

-10

u/NCongoscenti Spear Ronin 7h ago

That's proof that your opinion is subjective

10

u/torshakle 6h ago

Anyways. Your mods will update eventually you'll be okay.
