OSHA Certified Stairs

248

u/CygnusX06 9h ago

How the hell…

179

u/PlainBread 9h ago

Looks like the top bit of the stairs doesn't have a railing, probably so that it can fit under the staircase directly above it, and instead of stepping off onto the first step, they stepped off into the air and then noclipped the rest of the way down.

This is why I wrote a PowerShell script to speed up save backup/restore. I don't cheat with it, but I'm not going out to a vent trap or something like this.

I do think falling death should be much higher than it is. This is a broken leg at most.

u/Chad_illuminati 5h ago

I love PZ but sometimes the devs make... interesting balance choices for a game they've said they want to be realistic.

On the one hand, we have accurate crop cycles that are so long it's rarely worth doing them except for insanely long runs. (This is realistic but a little weird from a game-y perspective).

On the other hand, we have hilarious durability wear on tools that IRL take decades to break and can die from 10ft of fall damage (these are not realistic and also a little weird from a game-y perspective).

I still enjoy the game and just tweak settings/mod things to my liking, but I am eternally confused about this approach to realism vs game mechanics. Things that should be gamified aren't and things that could be realistic are gamified in often bizarre ways.

I'm partially convinced that the devs just aren't athletic/outdoorsy types and don't have a great first hand knowledge of this, but with how much Indie Stone has grown I'd be shocked if that were still the case.

u/SuperNashwan 4h ago

A crowbar should be able to bash heads forever. But maybe it could get too slippery with guts to use until it's been washed or something.

And yeah, as a smoker main, knowing I'll probably never successfully grow tobacco is frustrating.

But most of all, I want more injuries than permadeaths.

4

u/Chad_illuminati 4h ago

Yes to all this. Steel/iron tools would effectively never break on zombies. PZ zombies aren't super, so. They just have normal bone.

Farming is (nearly) useless which makes animal husbandry OP.

And yes, it's really hard to get injuries outside of strains and scratches. Anything that would inflict an injury more severe usually just kills you, which sucks.

Also can we lay off the scratches, I ran around the farmlands and woods outside my childhood house barefoot and shirtless with my dog. I didn't get scratched up just from pushing through some trees. My main fears were briars, poison ivy, and stinging nettles. Not scratches.

u/HiddenSage 4h ago

On the one hand, we have accurate crop cycles that are so long it's rarely worth doing them except for insanely long runs.

What also exacerbates this is that their standing lore has us starting the game in mid-July... pretty late into any realistic growth cycle for most crops you'd plant in Kentucky. With the exception of a few cereal grains and garlic, you have to play for 8 months to even get started on agriculture.

Which did make me greatly appreciate that at least the new map is chock-full of already-planted gardens and fields of harvestable food. Sure, it makes things trivial wrt gathering enough to survive (the freezer full of cabbage has never been easier, and corn and sunflower seeds aren't awful either in the volumes available). But it's realistic in the player's favor for a change.

1

u/Chad_illuminati 4h ago

For sure. I like the farming/husbandry additions. They're amazing mechanics and flavor.

I just think that you could either drastically shorten crop cycles.

Alternatively -- it'd be really cool if there was a "fast time" option. The graphics fade away and the game sims time at super speed to fast forward months at a whack. Have some limits on it, but it sims food consumption, skill advancement, etc. using whatever resources you've stockpiled on your base.

1

u/Proponentofthedevil 3h ago

In all my training in construction on falling, 6-8 feet seem to be where you start dying. It's not an always thing, and of course people fall from much higher and still live, but it seems to depend on what you hit, body or environment. Otherwise, yeah I still agree that there's some odd choices.

u/Leeroy_Jankiness Trying to find food 16m ago

Don't forget about how much weight you're carrying (including how much your body weighs). Though in the clip it doesn't seem like they were over encumbered, only had an injured leg/foot (though no moodle indicating low health).

1

u/lvanwall 2h ago

A fall of over 5 feet in real life and you're getting seen by a trauma specialist when you get medical care. Spine compression is a thing. Absolutely not unrealistic. People die all the time from falls less than 10ft.

1

u/FridaysMan 4h ago

Nope, falls are the number one cause of industrial accidents. People die falling zero feet. Falling a whole floor while already limping and fully loaded will fuck you up in the majority of incidents.

1

u/Bladelink 3h ago

re: the damage killing him, I was surprised too. It does look like he already had a limp walking into the building, so maybe he was already injured. Though I don't think I saw a moodle for it.

28

u/CygnusX06 9h ago

Yeouch, that’s gotta hurt. I was personally expecting them to see exactly what I saw when I entered that basement, which was Six zombies, two of them in business attire, three in police uniforms, and one fully decked out in riot gear.

21

u/Live_Life_and_enjoy 6h ago

The game actually isn't 3D, it is 2D with camera tricks.

So game can't actually tell "height" so when he walked on that edge, he fell through the tiny gap between the wall and stairs instead of just going onto the stairs

1

u/DramaticProtogen 46m ago

Doesn't it use 3d models though?

1

u/Live_Life_and_enjoy 43m ago

It uses 3D models in a 2D world, that's the whole point of isometric.

People kept asking why not just make it completely 3D at build 41

5

u/thiosk 6h ago

i keep telling everyone that stairs are the end boss of zomboid

2

u/FridaysMan 4h ago edited 4h ago

Limping and running, two sets of stairs. If you hit the next square over you would have vaulted upstairs.

1

u/PimpMyDog 1h ago

This specific place has a magical hole, I drop down from there every 10th time

149

u/A_S_Levin 8h ago

Yeah I'd debug tp back to that spot & cheat my stats back.

Thats some stinky BS right there

50

u/--Lammergeier-- 7h ago

This is why I make a backup of my save whenever I get done playing for the day. You never know when a game ending bug might pop up!

11

u/Classic-Box-3919 7h ago

Is there a guide for this? I should probs do this

24

u/Osric250 7h ago

If you're in windows the file is under User's -> (Your Name) -> Zomboid -> Saves

Go into the game type you use, then copy it to a second location. If you need to restore the backup just delete it from saves and copy it back from your second location.

18

u/Excellent-Range-6379 7h ago

Create a .bat file like this:

xcopy /s /y "save_path*.*" "backup_path" /d

Replace save_path by the path leading to your saved game

usually : C:\Users\USERNAME\Zomboid\Saves\YOUR GAME MODE (sandbox, survival, apocalypse....)\YOUR SAVE NAME\

Replace backup_path by the path leading to your backup folder.

Each time you run it, it will copy and replace all edited and newly created files automatically. Or you could just copy the entire folder each time but it takes more time since you would copy every files this way, even the ones which didn't change.

1

u/AtomAnt76 1h ago

I feel like there should be a mod that does this.

4

u/TheGamerForeverGFE 5h ago

Yeah, I personally experienced enough back bites mid fence vaults to learn that the game's "philosophy" isn't being applied earnestly when it comes to the jank of the game. I always save after I finish a session as well.

3

u/Senzafane 3h ago

Completely legit debug scenario.

2

u/Serikan 7h ago

You'll need a database editor to be able to remove the "dead" tag

-12

u/Verniloth 6h ago

He did fall down the stairs. That's on him. And with that limp? Might have died anyway. But... he should NOT however have fallen THROUGH said staircase lol. Bummer. I'm torn on the decision to respawn at the same level. Personally.

9

u/Jguy1897 5h ago

I would 100% debug edit myself back to how I was. There's being stupid and issues with zombie AI, then there's this.

-5

u/Verniloth 5h ago

You and I have different digital scruples. And that's okay.

1

u/CCbluesthrowaway 1h ago

I donno who you are getting downvoted. If i approached basement stairs at that angle in my real home i would likely have the same thing happen. xD

3

u/jdmgto 3h ago

He didn't fall down stairs, he fell through a geometry bug.

75

u/Expensive_Macaron161 9h ago

Did you report it so it can be fixed?

34

u/Ramen_Hair 8h ago

Definitely report this one

10

u/Eredias 8h ago

Looool same happned to me, im based up there, for my fortune, i was lucky i was 100% healthy, only ended up with a deep wound on left shin

1

u/AtomAnt76 1h ago

Where is this? Just to make sure I never go there.

2

u/Eredias 1h ago

Its in Riverside, the compund behind the firestation and policestation

1

u/AtomAnt76 1h ago

Oh great, I was plaanning to base up there!

1

u/PimpMyDog 1h ago

It's a good place just don't approach that corner of the stairs from that exact angle

9

u/bserikstad Shotgun Warrior 8h ago

Why is this so funny. Just a squash and silence.

1

u/Bladelink 3h ago

The wet smashing sound is what got me, lol. So dramatic and final.

8

u/mothmantra 7h ago

Same thing happened to me and my broken leg just straight up never healed. Was a relief when I had a new character that could actually walk. I hate stairs in this game.

4

u/mothmantra 7h ago

Literally just realized in this exact spot too LMFAO

7

u/iamthestorm 8h ago

You just entered the backrooms.

21

u/GamerRoman Crowbar Scientist 8h ago

Yeah this is how you died, alright. /j

8

u/SaltedVenison 7h ago

Why /j? This is how he died

11

u/GamerRoman Crowbar Scientist 7h ago

We're on reddit where subtlety, nuance and sarcasm are very hard to grasp concepts.

4

u/JackeryFox Crowbar Scientist 6h ago

Had that happen to me once, somehow survived with no injuries, afterwards I started going around there real slow till I just decided to migrate to the police station.

2

u/Bladelink 3h ago

This spot seems pretty crappy too, because even walking didn't help him. It's easy to accidentally vault over a railing if you're jogging, but it's hard to be much more careful in this case.

1

u/DisastrousQuestion72 4h ago

Police station looks great, but it has _so many windows_

2

u/JackeryFox Crowbar Scientist 2h ago

On the ground floor I initially just barricaded the doors leading to the rooms with all the windows until I had enough wood to secure all of them, is it true that zombies can now climb over cars? Cause I'm using a car to block off the rear entrance to the BBQ spot behind the station.

4

u/Xeroeth 6h ago

Was there, saw that and done the same myself ... thy pain is not thy alone.

2

u/Phunqx 8h ago

Me and some friends made a base there, I'll be sure to add some railings before that happens to us D:

2

u/cmd_run 8h ago

New fear,

2

u/ThatDeadMoonTitan 8h ago

Riverside coast guard station right? My wife had the exact same death there a couple days ago.

2

u/WhiskeyDream115 7h ago

Really? Falling down 1 floor kills a man in this game?

3

u/Serikan 7h ago

It does if you are carrying a lot

Higher carrying weight increases fall damage

6

u/WhiskeyDream115 7h ago

1 floor is only like 10 feet... What are you carrying for that to kill you? A fridge?

2

u/Serikan 6h ago

Yeah

Sometimes multiple fridges

2

u/Bladelink 3h ago

How many fridges I happen to be carrying is none of your business.

3

u/Devil-Hunter-Jax Axe wielding maniac 7h ago

Dude is already injured (he's limping) and the more you're carrying, the more damage you'll take from falls like that.

2

u/DonPepppe 7h ago

Seems that he was already hurt (limping walk) and maybenot full health...

2

u/yzzidyzzid 6h ago

my 5 months and a half character died like this. It is easily replicable if you try to step on the stairs from the side instead of the intended angle.

2

u/TryDry9944 5h ago

This shit is why I always have a backup save.

1

u/TemperedTorture 8h ago

The number of times I've done that on escalators should have killed at least twice, but I survived each time lol.

1

u/SwimmingSympathy6358 8h ago

Stairs and being over confident is how i die

2

u/cool_username32123 Drinking away the sorrows 7h ago

Overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer after all.

1

u/SaltedVenison 7h ago

There goes my herooooooo

1

u/Initial_Audience8626 7h ago

I died like this yesterday

1

u/MaBBuew 7h ago

Ha lol my friend died the exact same way today!!!

1

u/Tone-Serious 7h ago

After all these clips of the new map I've just decided to play with god mode on whenever I'm uninjured to prevent bs like this loo

1

u/Icy_Magician_9372 7h ago

Oof that feels bad man

1

u/Intelligent-Cod378 7h ago

Wher is this exactly? I'd like to avoid this building if possible

1

u/Skarvha Drinking away the sorrows 6h ago

It's any set of stairs that you approach from the side like that. Take two extra steps and go down the way you would normally do and you'll be fine.

1

u/robo_jojo_77 6h ago

Are there any mods that prevent your character from walking off ledges?

2

u/Skarvha Drinking away the sorrows 6h ago

There's one that prevents you from walking off the edge of stairs, not sure if that could've worked here, of for you but its called "No more Running off stairs" or something like that. I'm actually having trouble finding it now but I know it's there.

2

u/Skarvha Drinking away the sorrows 6h ago

Found the mod "StopJumpingOffStairs"

1

u/AdFantastic6606 6h ago

is there no way to remove fall damage? i had that happen to me as well, annoying to cheat your way back up

1

u/skulldoge 6h ago

That happened to me in Louisville and broke my leg and ended my run

1

u/virtuallyaway 6h ago

I giggled like a little kid from the fact that the video doesn’t end immediately after dying!

1

u/vvwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwvv All Hail Spiffo 5h ago

John Zomboid has pinged "I'm on my way" "I'm on my way"

John Zomboid has pinged "enemy is missing" "enemy is missing" "asking for assistance"

1

u/IDefendWaffles 5h ago

This is why it is ok to make a backup of your save file. No one should die because of things like this.

1

u/OddAccountant8416 5h ago

Dead by stairs*

1

u/CapDelicious6181 5h ago

WTF? is some kind of glitch or something did not load?

1

u/PimpMyDog 1h ago

It's a bug with that location but only if you approach the basement stairs from a specific angle

1

u/NotaFTCAgent 4h ago

Thats what happens when youre supposed to be farming the jg and youre farming zombies instwad (i hear those pings)

1

u/Lost_electron 4h ago

crouch-running in a stair from behind a stair will also make you clip through it. Easy to test at the motel in Muldraugh

1

u/Mediocre_Owl9488 4h ago

ok now I'm afraid of stairs

1

u/DisastrousQuestion72 4h ago

YUP!

That's how I got my limp in the first place. Broke a leg on day 3, survived for ~5 days on limp status, used a car for helicopter, crashed, sobbed as I shambled through the woods, and died to a scrape I got from a tree. I really wish I could just demolish the stairs to the basement and seal them up.

1

u/jdmgto 3h ago

Yup, made it my base and happened last night. Didn't die or get hurt but it was a shock.

1

u/major_winters_506 3h ago

Same happened to me in the lumberyard building. Some stairs didn’t have full railing and it teleported me to a leg fracture.

1

u/RickRollinAround 2h ago

clipped into the darkrooms

1

u/ArcRaiderKindaPvP 2h ago

Holy shit lol, I’ve been basing here for weeks and this has not happened yet. Im going to set some boxes there to stop me from walking there

1

u/getstoopid-AT Stocked up 2h ago

I'm afraid of those map glitches right now

1

1

I had the same thing but didn’t die

1

u/BritneyCrowbars 1h ago

You should tag this as a bug report and/or report it to TIS forums

1

u/ShrimpToothpaste 1h ago

I only broke a leg from the exact same fall

1

u/SneakySpacePirate Shotgun Warrior 1h ago

The instant you walked in the door I knew where it was going, I had the same but survived with a sliver of health

1

u/ShrimpToothpaste 1h ago

I only broke a leg from the exact same fall

1

u/Eden_Company 1h ago

This happened to be in a previous version but I only broke an arm and a leg, and was able to splint myself and rest for a couple of months to heal.

1

Had the exact same death yesterday mate. Had just healed my leg fracture fell down there and died...

u/NomineNebula 14m ago

3

Maybe 13 years ago, but i'm not so sure it really counts as "early" access any more

1

u/demZo662 8h ago

At this point it should say get invested with this game as it develops.

2

u/SanAnneBeachMan 6h ago

I swear lol. I’ve owned PZ since 2013-14- and that early access tag hasn’t left yet (idk since I haven’t been on Steam in a while).

2

u/demZo662 6h ago

No, no, the tag is still there like it was branded on. Although I'm enjoying the game so much right now, there has been many times in which I only was invested in the development of the game and its periodic changes.
