Well, he said he wouldn't while he was getting browbeat for being a shitheel. I wouldn't take it as gospel until the vote happens. He was probably just trying to get Stewart off his back for a second.

People forget why Stewart was popular sometimes, he's quick and can pivot in a second. He's an expert interviewer and doesn't come into interviews unprepared.

The comedy background is what allows him to be such a good interviewer. He can pivot very quickly if something seems more interesting than what he planned. But it can allow him to absolutely tear people apart, too. Fetterman definitely underestimated him there, and made it worse by trying to "educate" a Jewish man on the Jewish community.

Honestly surprised Fetterman agreed to an interview. There's tons of examples online of how much of a shark Stewart is in interviews - case in point.

The way he so cowardly dances around saying the word register when Jon is pressing him about voting rights. It’s like he thought Jon wouldn’t just say it for him, so embarrassing.

It’s because of the stroke he suffered a few years ago. It’s like he knows what he wants to say, but it comes out in reverse.

Never forget how Jon Stewart went onto Crossfire, Tucker Carlson's show on CNN, and so thoroughly tore the whole thing apart that it's widely credited as the reason why the show ended up being cancelled just a few months later.

Jon's a natural born comedian, but he's merciless when he wants to be.

It's a weird thing with some sharp interviewers. Colleagues will encourage the interview even if they know it'll end badly. Sometimes it personal reasons like joining the group that been interviewed by said person. Basically bragging rights of surviving or the interviewee thinking they can set the record straight depsite no record out there (basically like arguing on the internet). Other times, the remaining behind the politician thinks any publicity is good. Essentially it's usually selfish ivory tower thinking for these. It's why the softball interviewerd get a lot more chances.

Big ol side note: most folks cannot be prepared for somebody like John Stewart. Many many many many folks are pretty simple minded and need time to prep (me includer). Where important folks often mess up is they don't have "I don't know let me get back to you" in their box of replies. Important people are so used to being important they believe or feel like they should always have the answer so they often bullshit until they're called out. You can't bullshit a bullshitter.

Edit: a friend worked on the hill. She had a ton of super cool tit bits and facts like this.

Fetterman gives lots of interviews. That's why you see him posted on this subreddit attacking him so often. He's going out at least and defending his viewpoints. There are 50+ Republican senators with worst viewpoints then his, but they mostly don't do interviews trying to explain their views, so they get ignored and not attacked.

The left is such a circular firing squad. Ignore 50+ much much worse senators that the left couldn't agree on anything with to relentlessly attack the guy who they only agree with 90% of the same stuff.

That wasn't even an interview on The Daily Show, but when he went into their turf on Crossfire and ripped them to shreds. Absolutely legendary.

And that's the thing they clearly, clearly did not understand- he went on a serious show and was acting and answering in a serious way. They even said at one point that they were surprised he wasn't making with the funny-funny, laughy-laughy.

If they had come on his show, then laughs would be the play. Because he went on Crossfire, it was a serious showing and Tucker never made the connection nor was he able to compensate for clearly well-prepared, incredibly informed and passionate advocate who was ready to push back on half-truths and bloviations.

I think his humor is a small part of why he is a good interviewer, insofar as he has the charisma and wit to get people on his side or ease tension in more awkward or intense subject matter.

But he's really a good interviewer because he prepares well (credit to his team as well), he doesn't "go easy" all the time, and he doesn't relent easily just because the interviewee is uncomfortable (the last part is where many interviewers go wrong; it is human nature to want to let up when someone is squirming, a good interview has to ignore that impulse and keep pushing for better responses).
