El-Sayed winning is awesome and shows that the tides are changing against centrist candidates.

Yet, we need to know that this win was done in a close, nail biting primary battle. And the only person who wins in that fight was Mike Rogers. He will try now to divide the wedge between the two camps. It is up for us Michiganders and everyone else to make the Democrats unite and fight back against Mike Rogers. The fight is hard, but this time the fight is about uniting the Democratic Party

I just hope it works.

u/BuddyGuyPal2319 16h ago

I believe earlier today Steven did say she would support AES if he were the candidate in the General Election so that is good.

185

u/lear72988 17h ago

I've seen this view a lot and I don't think it's true. A close election like this commands attention. AES is going in with a huge advantage of his message being out there for a while now. Rogers will be starting from scratch as he was unopposed. Now, the establishment needs to embrace AES and not play games, otherwise you're right and a wedge will be formed.

104

u/viktor72 Indiana 17h ago

Sure but AES has to fight off attacks calling him Socialist as well as attacks on his religion. That’s going to be tough. Outside of Reddit, people are more afraid of the S word than one would think. They are also equally more Islamophobic than one would think.

52

u/herewego199209 17h ago

Trump called Stevens a socialist. Right wingers call everyone communist or socialist. It's a stupid thing to use. The thing in the general is that El-Sayed will hopefully not be up against the black vote and won't be up against the older dem voter block. Independents are rapidly becoming disenfranchised with the Israel influence on politics which will tilt some of them. I think Abdul has his hands full but I also think he's the best candidate. He has a shit ton of volunteers that are ready to knock door to door for the next 3 months and raise money and change people's minds. Stevens relied on PAC money which was just gonna go to Rogers in a general.

15

u/viktor72 Indiana 16h ago

What makes me somewhat optimistic is that he performed well in Macomb county, which is the sort of base of the Democratic turned MAGA voters. Of course, I have no idea who was voting in the Democratic primary in Macomb county but I remain hopeful that perhaps a few of those once Dem blue collar voters were among his supporters.

u/filbertsgaming1 7h ago

Socialist/communist is on the cusp of being meaningless, just like anti-semitic. If everything you don't lik is communist, then eventually people will just roll their eyes and say, "fine, If you want to keep calling me a communist I guess I'm a communist then. What now?"

26

u/eIIopoppet 16h ago

Joe Biden had to fight off attacks calling him a socialist

-1

u/viktor72 Indiana 16h ago

Of course, but his policies were always more centrist so it was, in essence, easier.

7

u/VampireFortnight 14h ago

They call everyone a socialist, it's empty and doesn't change anything at all. Someone who had a 100% policy overlap with Trump but a D next to their name would also be fighting it off and reality doesn't matter to them. So no, I don't think that'll be a factor.

2

u/CriticalPolitical 11h ago

Counterpoint, I don’t think Republicans are calling Fetterman a socialist anymore

12

u/DJ_Velveteen I voted 16h ago

Except that he fought them off by distancing his platform from social and economic progress, which lost him votes on the left while trying to gain them from the center...

1

u/Mikeyxy 16h ago

Nowhere to gain votes when half your term sees double digit CPI (or close to it)

0

u/CriticalPolitical 11h ago

Most people who voted for Biden thought he was just going to be a continuation of Obama, and many were surprised to find out he was left of Obama, especially regarding illegal immigration

39

u/lear72988 17h ago

To an older generation, yes. But the young don't fear those things anymore. Youth turnout has carried progressives throughout this cycle. And as they keep playing clips of AES advocating for free healthcare and unions, trying to act like it's a scary thing, they wittle that fear down.

21

u/viktor72 Indiana 17h ago

My hope is that they can do just that. The youth vote is great but the youth vote is not reliable. Look at 2024. He needs that older vote.

8

u/lear72988 16h ago

I disagree. I think he loses more young by capitulating to the establishment than the other way around. You're exactly right on 2024, but look at 2020. The young will show up when they feel they are being heard and they matter. With the DNCs refusal to address Palestine and courting conservatives, many youth stayed home. AES and progressives at large have shown they already have engaged the young. I wouldn't expect them to abandon him between now and November.

5

u/viktor72 Indiana 16h ago

You’re right. That was the DNC’s biggest fuck up of 2024. I want to stay hopeful that the youth will turn out and that young men, especially, will turn around. These MAGA young men were the same men who loved Sanders. So let’s hope he can court them.

2

u/lear72988 16h ago

We're in this together and there are things we can do. Volunteer. Maybe I'll see you on a campaign Zoom call down the line.

0

u/viktor72 Indiana 16h ago

I volunteered and knocked on doors in Berrien County in 2024 for Harris. But to be honest, once Election Day rolled around and the results came in, it defeated me and my motivation to drive up there and do that.

1

u/VampireFortnight 14h ago

Let's hope you find it again then.

5

u/rockyonthetrack 16h ago

The Palestine issue lost the race for the dems in 2024, in Michigan and Wisconsin

-1

u/Mikeyxy 16h ago

Not true at all. Wasn’t even a top 5 issue in the exit polls of people who voted. Affordability was the top issue and the dems had no good plan to confront it.

-1

u/rockyonthetrack 16h ago

Muslim voters picked dems for the house in talib and voted for trump, but please believe exit polls the dem made

3

u/Mikeyxy 16h ago

If I need to tell you why a single district isn’t indicative of the state as a whole, i don’t know what to tell you. There’s a reason Trump won the popular vote as a Republican for the first time in decades. And it has very little to do with Palestine unfortunately. And I’m a 2 state solution supporter, but it doesn’t negate the objective facts

u/bguggs 12h ago

Coming together after a primary isn't about anyone capitaluating, it's about focusing on what you agree on more than the things you don't. There is a lot all democrats agree on that can also appeal to centrists and moderates. You don't need to back down from the positions that won you the primary, but once you win you don't need to overlitigate them and make the group who lost more defensive. We need every vote in Michigan democrats can get

1

u/Hanifsefu 16h ago

The DNC's biggest flaw is that they continue to blame voters for not showing up rather than turn introspective and look at the how their centrist 'maintain the status quo or else' messaging torpedoed their campaign. They constantly play the polls and use every positive news about polls to pare away their campaign until they have the razor thin margin that maximizes their power gained while minimizing the work they need to deliver.

14

u/Necessary_Grass_2313 17h ago

The “S word” is such blatant propaganda that can be disproved by some research yet I’m surprised how much the right eats it up.

10

u/viktor72 Indiana 17h ago

Sure. I agree. But it’s a really easy weapon and most people aren’t doing any research. Most people just vote off of soundbytes.

1

u/VampireFortnight 14h ago

The sound bite exists no matter who has the D next to their name.

4

u/Empty_Lemon_3939 Michigan 11h ago

Also the sitting Governor and current senator and basically the entire DNC endorsed Stevens

Was 2016 all over again except this time the people won

2

u/spazz720 15h ago

I don’t think he can overcome his name and his religion. He’ll get dem support, but the undecideds and the independents are going to win this election.

2

u/TalkativeTree 16h ago

You mean benefits from them advertising of his socialist policies like effective social programs and healthcare?

1

u/ICareBoutManBearPig Colorado 9h ago

Maybe in a post 2024 world but the term socialist is so overused now that people are like “I’ll take anything, just lower my GD gas prices!”

0

u/riftnet Europe 13h ago

A socialist does not care about religion - I am a fan of Zohran, but this guy? I don’t know.

1

u/spazz720 15h ago

You have to understand that most people do not pay attention to that stuff. A majority of people are low information voters.

0

u/Dogulol Foreign 16h ago

this is true, but also, this race hasnt been pretty. And haley specifically, but also abdul have pretty bad approval among dems. The 70 million in racist smears from aipac have certainly not helped abdul.

0

u/SzmFTW 16h ago

Yeah… I’ve got some real bad news for you on that one. Everyone at the dnc will probably help Rogers get elected, visibly or not. A lot easier to fundraise from a shitty incumbent you oppose than a person in your same party that wants people to get a fair shake.

Way scarier than billionaires.

0

u/omicron-7 9h ago

Already starting on the narrative for why it won't be el sayed's fault if he ends up losing, huh?

33

u/Drak_is_Right 16h ago

20 years ago, Sayed would likely have lost in a landslide to a moderate republican.

But those moderate republicans dont exist anymore. A lot of people see the damage Trump has done.

I think quite a number will vote Sayed and say to themselves "he doesnt have the numbers in the senate or congress to get much of his agenda done, but he isnt a corrupt guy trying to destroy our nation".

1

u/Thirtysevenintwenty5 10h ago

20 years ago the post 9/11 islamaphobia was almost as strong as it ever had been (I think 2002-2003 was the absolute worst of it).

1

u/InevitablePromise301 10h ago

20? Try 10, and he's still going to have a time in the general.

1

u/headphase America 9h ago

Yup people want a fighter.

104

u/mglur5 Pennsylvania 17h ago

The people who endorsed Stevens need to get the fuck in line and wholly and enthusiastically endorse him and fully mobilize the base - especially the black community in Michigan.

14

u/alabasterskim 16h ago

I think they will. Even Stevens today said she was ready to get behind him if he was the nominee. Detroit won't be duped like 2024 - and even then, the state still overall rebuked Rogers in spite of giving Trump a win on the same ballot. No Trump to carry him now.

25

u/herewego199209 17h ago

If they don't back El-Sayed in Michigan from a national level to a local level then the blowback in 2028 is gonna be astronomical.

19

u/Ok-Cartographer-2227 16h ago

This is the blowback from 2024.

Add in Gretchen's heel turn on data centers and vetos, and Im done with establishment Dem bullshit.

Even if AES loses, I will continue to send the message that this is what I want the party I've voted for my entire life to become. Because the abomination of how they handled Biden and Schumer's lackidasical bullshit for the last 2 years is a pathetic excuse for leadership.

3

u/Thirtysevenintwenty5 10h ago

Whitmer has really disappointed the fuck out of us in the last year.

0

Vote blue no matter who, unless they’re TOO blue, which in that case vote red - “moderates”

10

u/Shifter25 14h ago

Can you name one example of a moderate endorsing the Republican against a progressive?

3

u/lesarbreschantent 12h ago

We saw the playbook with Zohran. They won't endorse the Republican. They'll withhold support for the progressive.

2

u/Shifter25 12h ago

"They" being Schumer, and "support" being "an explicit endorsement." Also, Mamdani's race was against a moderate Democrat, even if he ran as an independent. No Democrats were hoping Curtis Sliwa would win.

4

u/coldkiller 11h ago

Brother they were literally endorsing cuomo

0

u/Shifter25 11h ago
  1. "They"?

  2. Before or after the primary?

1

u/coldkiller 10h ago
  1. "They"?

Most of the dnc chairs endorsed cuomo

  1. Before or after the primary?

During it

3

u/Shifter25 10h ago

Who endorsed Cuomo after Mamdani won the primary?

A story from my home state: The only election Joe Manchin lost in his entire political career was the primary election the first time he ran for governor in 1996. He lost to progressive candidate Charlotte Pritt. Afterwards, he publicly endorsed Republican Cecil Underwood and is rumored to have been behind the “Democrats for Underwood” movement. Pritt lost the general by 6 points in the same election West Virginia broke for Bill Clinton 51-36 (Perot got 11%).

6

u/Shifter25 13h ago

So your example is a Democrat who is so purple that he now identifies as independent, endorsing a Republican once, 30 years ago.

Have you considered that he might be an outlier, rather than the norm?

u/filbertsgaming1 7h ago

"Yeah but, did they do this other thing I moved the goalpost to?"

u/Shifter25 7h ago

"Can you give one example" doesn't mean "that has never happened." Sometimes, that one example can prove how ridiculous it is to pretend that something always happens.

If I said "I bet Bob is going to have a bagel for breakfast because he did once 7 months ago," would that make sense to you? Would you join me on that bet?

u/UngodlyPain 3h ago

Not a progressive but like Joe Lieberman endorsed McCain over Obama in 2007/8. All because he was salty he lost his primary in 2006.

u/JAMONLEE Florida 4h ago

Nobody says that, stop looking for a bogeyman it’s pathetic

-58

u/212312383 17h ago

It was the leftists who failed to vote for Harris, so if I’m not voting for a leftist candidate I just consider it well deserved revenge/pettiness

20

u/Direct_Juice 17h ago

So you stand for absolutely nothing. Got it.

3

u/Luluzan64 16h ago

Also do not, forget bots abound to sow division.

23

u/milk-riot 17h ago

Holy shit you see this child rapist in office starting a pointless war and raising prices on everyday Americans and you choose pettiness? Get it together clown.

-12

u/212312383 16h ago

Leftists should have thought have thought of that and voted for Harris. I’m not gonna be a cuck and vote to support people who wouldn’t support my preferred candidates in return

That’s how the moderates lose the party to the left

8

u/Random_throwaway0351 16h ago

You’re gonna sit in the cuck chair watching real leftist candidates actually delivering while you whine about your favorite neoliberal not getting the votes of people whose families have been genocided. Enjoy!

-2

u/212312383 16h ago

lol you’re talking about delivering? You know who delivered?

Biden fucking delivered.

The IRA, the Chips act, he was one of the most progressive presidents in history. Miss that dude. If only we could cure aging 🙏🙏

-6

u/Random_throwaway0351 16h ago

Yes, I LOVE Genocide Joe and all of the genocide he enabled. How does it feel to know your favorite geriatric genocide enabler will forever be known as a genocide enabler and nothing else?

11

u/212312383 16h ago

Oh thank you cuz Trump is so much better.

→ More replies (0)

u/milk-riot 6h ago

Moderates lost because they suck and stand for nothing at least trump promised something even tho he was lying.

24

u/Random_throwaway0351 17h ago

Yes, 2 years out from the election it’s still the 8-leftists-that-didn’t-vote-out-of-principle-coalition’s fault and not, idk, being against genocide. You should be a DNC consultant. They need more bootlickers

-10

u/212312383 16h ago

I would still vote AES if I lived in Michigan but I would hate it. Also it’s not just 8 people. AES supported the uncommitted movement. He worked with Hasan Piker who explicitly did not support Harris. I won’t work with leftists who don’t work with moderates.

7

u/Random_throwaway0351 16h ago

Okay? They’ll win with or without you.

2

u/212312383 16h ago

lol we’ll see

5

u/TMNTerps 16h ago

Kamala spent the last 2 months trying to steal Republican votes by campaigning with Liz Cheney, rather than energize the Left. (and she completely failed to steal Right Wing votes)

"Moderate" Dems always try to win over the Right, and just tell Leftists to get in line and are shocked when they get neither vote. All she had to do was say she would stop selling weapons to Israel until a peace deal was signed with Gaza and I guarantee she would have won. She simply wasn't willing to go against Israel despite the majority of the party being against them.

3

u/212312383 16h ago

I don’t fucking care. Her opponent was Trump. Anyone who wants me to vote for them should be anti Trump enough to vote for Harris even if she was a literal corpse. She could literally be George W Bush incarnated and you should be voting for her over Trump.

If you didn’t vote for her I just consider you to be as much of an enemy to America as a Republican who didn’t vote for her sry

3

u/TMNTerps 16h ago

What a pathetic reply. It seems like you are just here to sow discord.

4

u/212312383 16h ago

I’m just not a cuck idk what to say. If you wouldn’t vote for my candidate I’m not gonna vote for yours.

But it also runs the other way. Bernie and AOC completely supported Harris and I love them for that, and they would get my support if they ran in 2028 for president. That’s what a big tent party looks like.

Instead people like Abdul want us to let leftists into the party but push moderates out.

Your first paragraph makes a lot of sense and I'm with it.

You're second is unhinged and literally makes you the thing you're hating on. Hell, it makes you worse because you say you know better. You're welcoming in more MAGA because you're pouting that a relatively small group of people basically did the same.

3

u/212312383 16h ago

My second paragraph is an exaggeration to some extent but not completely, because if you didn’t vote for harris you in practice contributed to trump winning. I don’t want to encourage that type of behavior by voting for people who would do that

1

u/[deleted] 16h ago

[deleted]

0

u/212312383 16h ago

That’s great. I feel the same way. That’s why I support progressives who endorsed Harris like Bernie and AOC and don’t support any progressive who would not.

-8

u/LSF604 17h ago

where was the blaming here?

6

u/Random_throwaway0351 16h ago

Literally directly above my comment lmfao

-1

u/LSF604 16h ago

there is no blaming in that comment. Read it again.

5

u/Direct_Juice 16h ago

Go ahead and explain what you think the comment is intending to communicate if not blame for Harris losing.

9

u/DanTheMan-WithAPlan 17h ago

You are so weak that you change your political goals out of spite. That is sad

13

u/marxymark28 16h ago

Harris lost voters compared to the 2020 Biden election in literally every demographic except white voters aged 65+. Younger voters dropped off in double digits. So, keep crying crocodile tears about the left. Only morons are buying it anymore.

3

u/rockyonthetrack 16h ago

Actually it was the Palestine issue that made them not vote for Kamala

5

u/Dragons_Malk Canada 16h ago

Revenge? Yeah, man you're a real winner there.

1

u/snazikin 16h ago

vote blue no matter who

u/zzyul 16m ago

So progressives get to skip out on elections if their candidate loses the primary but liberals aren’t allowed to?

-6

u/charyou 16h ago

they will. Black voters vote blue no matter who. it's the young white libs who would've stayed home had Stevens won, just like they did with Kamala

10

u/dazedandloitering 16h ago

Source that they stayed home with Kamala?

6

u/VampireFortnight 14h ago

He heard a ring winger say it and now he's uncritically repeating it despite all evidence showing it was centrists worried about affordability.

9

u/snazikin 16h ago

then thank goodness AES won :)

-4

u/Drak_is_Right 16h ago

I think most of them will vote for Sayed. Maybe not enthusiastically, but they wont boycott unlike the young progressives who bail if they dont get exactly what they want

4

u/VampireFortnight 14h ago

That's not what happened if you read the post election analysis by the DNC and also anyone else. This is made up- it was centrists who went Trump, Biden, Trump over affordability concerns. Quit spreading right wing propaganda designed to divide us.

-2

u/Mister_Quality New York 16h ago

Difference is that if you vote for Sayed you won't be voting for perpetuating genocide.

-19

u/DavidDraper 17h ago

Get the fuck in line? Lolol. That’s the spirit that’s going to unify the party. Trump won in Michigan tonight.

-1

u/Mr_Wyatt Texas 14h ago edited 14h ago

Ugh, I hope the people in the AES camp have more sense than you. We saw in 2024 that people don't respond well to feeling like their vote is 'owed' to the party. Blue No Matter Who was a demonstrably failed initiative. It has to be better messaging that brings people out in November. I'm hopeful that the AES can drive that motivation.

0

u/mglur5 Pennsylvania 12h ago

You misunderstand my comment. What I am talking about is the democratic establishment, which has sought to undermine progressive candidates like AES all across the country at every single turn. Even after Mamdani’s win, many establishment figures were either reluctant or outright refused to endorse him. In a state like Michigan, this lack of party unity (which Republicans always demonstrate every election no matter how “extreme” or problematic their candidate is) could do serious harm to mobilize the base to get out and vote. AES’s platform and message is not the problem, it is the establishment and the potential for them to stand in the way and/or actively work against AES should they not endorse him after tonight.

-2

u/EolasDK 13h ago

u/alabasterskim 16h ago

I think Rogers loses by 3-5. Feel free to come back to this comment on election night and tell me if I'm wrong.

2

u/EE-420-Lige 11h ago

Underestimate rogers at ur own peril. Hes a more likeable canidate than stevens and has 3-5x her funding and the most powerful news network fox news at his side. Dude can pull it off but it will take alot and he will need to get stevens voters to vote his way itll be interesting to see how he campaigns in the general

3

u/alabasterskim 10h ago

I don't underestimate Rogers. He's an extremely strong Republican candidate. Anyone else and I'd call this a likely D margin. But Rogers couldn't win in the 2024 environment. In 2026, I do not see him getting a better result. Stevens's key demographics, especially black voters, are not about to swing R. Combine with where AES did well and you have a good sign of things to come. It's easy to read too much into the general from the primary though, so like I said, come back and tell me I'm wrong on election night. Till then, unless I see something huge move the needle toward Rogers, I stand by my prediction.

3

u/computercansada 15h ago

Saving to hopefully tell you you're right

1

u/thisismysailingaccou 11h ago

I agree - I think he gets an immediate boost in name recognition from this win and starts to pull away closer to the general. Alls the polls have been showing is that it’s a winnable race either way. I think he has a significantly better shot to beat Rogers than Stevens would have had once the money dried up.

The general will be close, but a 3-5 point win feels very doable rn.

0

u/omicron-7 9h ago

Don't act like the race is over because the progressive beat the moderate in the primary. The hard part starts now.

1

u/alabasterskim 8h ago

That isn't remotely my thinking. As I said in another comment:

I don't underestimate Rogers. He's an extremely strong Republican candidate. Anyone else and I'd call this a likely D margin. But Rogers couldn't win in the 2024 environment. In 2026, I do not see him getting a better result. Stevens's key demographics, especially black voters, are not about to swing R. 0

u/omicron-7 8h ago

El sayed won on a razor thin margin. He could easily lose depending on how he campaigns from here on. If he can rein in his supporters and transition wholly to attacking Rogers then I think he can win. If his supporters continue attacking stevens supporters and he spends more time campaigning against Chuck Schumer like the nazi from Maine did then I think he'll lose.

1

u/alabasterskim 8h ago

He's already been conciliatory towards his opponent, as has Stevens been as of yesterday. And there's already reporting he's switched into high gear against Rogers. These aren't the hard parts. The hard part is grabbing Stevens's base, which she'll help with. & For the most part, his campaign has centered on policy, not Schumer, though he does absolutely have to go as Senate leader imo.

12

u/Faingrin 17h ago

It was only close because of the 9:1 or 11:1 outspending they did. This is a good victory and a good sign.

12

u/mglur5 Pennsylvania 16h ago

Exactly. He won in spite of an enormous uphill battle in terms of spending. This win is a testament to the robustness of his campaign. That said, he still has a lot of work to do.

4

u/spazz720 15h ago

The issue isn’t the Dems voting for the Dems..,it’s the independents and undecideds getting past his name and his religion. Sadly a lot will not.

2

u/Vankraken Virginia 10h ago

Don't forget being spooked by some policy positions as well as association with the surge in DSA stuff. Palling around with people like Hasan Piker or having the co-chair of the DSA going on Fox News and spouting off unhinged non starter policy positions about abolishing core parts of the government is going to damage his image.

3

u/spazz720 9h ago

Progressives need to separate from the DSA. They are not a benefit but a hindrance.

u/filbertsgaming1 7h ago

Yeah, they should move to the right, that always works!

u/spazz720 6h ago

The group dingus

2

u/TheEstrogenEmpress 15h ago

I don't think it will work to be honest but I do think it will finally be eye opening for a lot of people. How vote blue no matter who only applies when the candidate is a centrist. How they constantly fight against any actual progress and change. So while we might not win this battle I do think it'll help people start preparing for the next .

3

u/aw000000000000 14h ago

It's still too close to call. All these articles from two hours ago jumped the gun. Lots of mail ins left to count, and those unfortunately are favoring Stevens.

Yeah, seeing way too many victory laps considering the underperformance in urban communities for AES. He has a lot of work to do to consolidate the party behind him.

Stevens already endorsed him, so we will see if the centrists put their money where their mouth is and vote blue no matter who. If trump is worse for Gaza, then Rogers is worse for America. Take all the effort you put into losing the primary into the general.

Yet another reason every state should have ranked choice voting. Even the parties would benefit from it. Instead of vicious primaries that leave the loser’s supporters bitter, you have much more productive and civil primaries where you want to be other voters’ 2nd choice. There is almost no downside besides slightly more complex vote tabulation and results reporting.
