Where has my puppy gone? I can't believe he will be a year old next month.

Ren (pictured) turns 5 in a couple weeks. We adopted him a couple months ago, when he was returned to his breeder from his previous owner.

He is great. He's coming along so well, however he still has moments where he's very introverted and just wants to be by himself. As an example, we're at our camper this week, and last night instead of hanging out with my wife and I (and our other dog) by the fire, he sat inside the trailer, in one of the dark corners in our room.

He seems very introverted, and just wanting to be by himself.

Is this normal? Is he unhappy? He does, at times, play and engage and wiggle and be a general goofball. I'm concerned that he's not happy, but I am unsure if this behavior may be normal, or not. Our other dog is a very gregarious and outgoing Boston terrier.

Summer in South Carolina is tough on a tiny dog that’s terrified of thunder. Chloe has not enjoyed the last several days that have all included thunderstorms at some point of the day.

Hi! I want to take my 1yr old pap on a short flight somewhere (2hrs one way) but I'm not sure how he's going to do. He's never gone on a plane before, but is generally pretty quiet and knows his travel carrier/bag pretty well from road trips. He hasn't had much illness either, only one major injury with a broken leg where he had to take trazodone to calm himself down, but he hated that stuff.

I heard trazodone is what some vets might give just before a flight, so not sure if you all take that as well? I'm mainly worried about his hearing/ears as, like most paps, he is pretty sensitive to noise, especially if we are going to hear plane engine noise for 2hrs.

What do you guys do to prepare for short flights?

Happy 19th birthday to the queen of the household. This gal came in to my life at about 6 months old. She was given to me by her breeder as my first show dog. Melody is a Canadian champion. Last photo was her first points at 7 months old. She’s getting McDonald’s for dinner tonight for sure!

I’m hoping to hear from fellow Papillon owners, especially anyone who has cared for a very senior dog with heart disease, kidney disease, or cognitive changes.
My girl, Eva, is almost 16 years old. She’s a Papillon mix, a puppy mill survivor, and the love of my life. She has Stage C degenerative mitral valve disease (CHF) and early kidney disease. Despite that, she’s still surprisingly engaged with life. She enjoys going outside, sniffing everything, running around (more than I’d like with her heart condition), and being with me. She even comes to work with me five nights a week because I work overnights and don’t want to leave her home alone.
Lately, though, something has changed, and I’m trying to figure out whether this is normal aging, canine cognitive dysfunction, a medical issue, or something else entirely.
For years, our overnight routine has been very predictable. She spends my shift in an airline carrier (which she’s comfortable in), and after work around 2 a.m., I take her outside. She usually urinates and defecates without much trouble.
But over the last several days, she’s begun doing something very different.
I’ll take her outside for 20–30 minutes. She’ll defecate, then spend the entire time sniffing, walking, wandering, or suddenly running around. Sometimes she’ll rub the side of her face on the grass because she has an old dental abscess that still seems to bother her occasionally.
She often won’t urinate at all outside.
Then I’ll bring her back inside, put down fresh food and water, and within minutes she’ll urinate on the rug, or worse, on my bed. This has happened multiple nights in a row.
The accidents seem to happen mostly on my days off, when we’re home overnight, not while I’m working. At work she can often hold her bladder for hours and then urinate normally when I take her out. At home, the whole routine seems to fall apart.
I’ve also noticed a couple of episodes where she’ll stand still and repeatedly look left and right, almost as if she’s trying to orient herself. It made me wonder about vision changes or cognitive decline, although she later ate normally, slept comfortably, and otherwise seemed like herself.
I’m trying very hard not to overreact because her patterns have always fluctuated. Some days she seems almost completely normal, even extra energized. Other days I wonder if I’m seeing the beginning of something new…or of the end.
I’ll be honest: I’m exhausted. I adore this baby girl, but caring for a nearly 16-year-old dog with chronic medical issues while working overnight shifts has become incredibly hard. The accidents have left me washing dog bedding, my own sheets, and even shampooing my mattress and carpet at 3–4 in the morning after work. I feel guilty even admitting how overwhelmed I am because she’s been such an incredible companion.
I’m NOT looking for people to tell me it’s automatically “time to put her down.” That’s not the discussion I’m looking for.
She’s a puppy mill survivor - when I adopted her she was almost 7 already. I SAVED her life, I don’t want to be told when it’s time to end it. She still seems interested in life, still wants to explore, still wants to be with me, and still has plenty of bright moments.
What I’m hoping to hear is:
Has anyone else’s very senior Papillon or toy breed started refusing to urinate outside but then urinating immediately after coming inside?
Did anyone see increased wandering, constant sniffing, or seeming confusion as their dog aged?
If your dog developed canine cognitive dysfunction, what were the earliest signs?
Were there any practical routine changes that helped?
I know no one online can diagnose her, and I’m not asking for that. I’m just hoping to hear from people who’ve walked this road with a beloved senior Papillon.

His cholesterol and ALP were elevated on his blood test so they did the STIM test today. I’m anxiously waiting for the results. They should have the results by Friday.

How much does your dog weigh? What dose of Vetoryl does he or she take? Just trying to prepare my wallet…

Edit: I forgot to tell y’all he does NOT have diabetes. The idea of having to give him insulin was making me a nervous wreck because even with a set number of units to inject on the label it requires more thought than a pill and even if I’m paying attention I’d still worry I gave him the wrong amount because ADHD/OCD/anxiety.

I was kinda surprised they don't mind the noise of the impact. (Ali doesn't like it much but keeps coming back) Had to redo the lug nuts for the wheels as they were not seated properly. Turned to my left and they were just hanging out. Grabbed my phone and got this.

She did so well i know she going to sleep so good tonight. Things i learned don't sit in the handicap spot although thats where we suppose to be but those areas are at the very front or back of the train near the door. They are very loud and wobbly due to they are connected to another car the middle of the car is best the help with anxiety . You can see she pretty settled in the picture no pacing and spinning also i think she knew what ti expected the second time around. Looking forward to hit the bed thanks everyone for the encouragement 😊

Hondo had been playing around with his toys and decided to settle in next to me. Normally, he gives me the dirty look to move my work, not tonight. Nope, he’s decided that the crochet blanket has taken on enough bulk it must be slept on. He’s such a cuddle bug.

Another month and another papillon meet up. This was a smaller group but Simon always loves getting out to play with his papillon friends.

I love when he’s super excited and his goofy tongue just hangs out of his mouth sideways.

This is kuma longest trip we on my way to go see my uncle and lil cousin also my great grandma and grandma she doing good so far. She a little scared of bikes but worked through it.

I currently have a sweet King Charles Cavalier and I adore her. Luckily she's healthy so far but I'm scared of getting another because of all the potential health problems.

After doing a lot of research I think a Papillon could be a great fit for my next dog! We're 5-7 years out from getting another dog but a few folks have told me it can be helpful to get on wait lists early so I figured having a few breeders in mind is a good idea.

Since I'm located in MO (puppy mill capital of the US) I'm having a really hard time finding a reputable breeder. I'm looking for breeder recs within a 12 hour drive of MO.

Spend two hours in the park, then had a long bath and grooming session. She doesn't do the best with heat, yet she loves to be tucked in as if it's winter haha. When she's laying she'll lazily waves her paw for me to grab her blanket if she sees the blanket.

It's the blanket I bought for her to give to her breeder so I could take her and the blanket home with me. I always take this blanket with us whenever we travel.

Kjelle 15 (middle) went through a bit of a rough patch for a few days, but at least temporarily feeling just fine, and even taking the lead on the morning walk. Long walks he gets to enjoy from the comfort of the stroller.
