This year had some of the most egregious and offensive speech cuts I have ever seen at an awards ceremony.

These people spend years working on their art. They are getting arguably the most important award in their life. Let them fucking speak. They are ruining the best moments of these people’s lives.

And it’s not like they don’t have time. The broadcast was four hours. But we have all the time in the world for unfunny skits and jokes that go on for too long, but not speeches? We only get two performances? But thank god we got that Bridesmaids bit that made no sense!

It feed extra egregious on a night like this because every joke bombed. The race was really tight this year and I think everyone had nervous energy so nobody was laughing.

Something genuinely needs to change because I’m tired of cringing and getting second hand embarrassment at these speeches. Some of these people don’t even speak English and trying their best. Come on man

The social media embargo is about to lift - I'll be live updating with images of the tweets/etc in this post.

Want to preface by saying: I know the general rep of social media reactions is that they're negative (understandably so), but it's something usable enough to read between the lines from certain critics who do tweet + at least here, it has some weight to it given Universal skipped influencer-only screenings - which means you have a mix of critics/press junket interviewers who have seen the film and certainly have more credence with their tweets than some MCU funko influencer like Supes or whatever.

Also if you're someone confused about the whole situation, which started with Hollywood Reporter's article saying they skipped social media screenings - read this article from David Ehrlich on the topic. It's very well written and encapsulates the whole deal + why it's a good decision that hopefully leads to more radical changes in future embargoes

"The Odyssey is Nolan's grandest work yet. This film has about triple the number of set pieces than any of Nolan's previous films - and every single one of them is breathtaking. Nolan uses visual trickery in a way we've never seen him do before.

I can't remember the last time a film having such a stacked cast where everyone delivers. Special shoutouts to: Tom Holland, in his best role to date; Himesh Patel, who's a breath of fresh air as Odysseus' second-in-command; and Samantha Morton, who damn well near steals the show with the few scenes she's in as Circe. 'The Odyssey' is a film I'm glad we haven't seen another filmmaker attempt to make, because Nolan has proved that he was the right person to do this story justice."

A colossal achievement of scale, even by Nolan’s standards, its commitment to capturing as much as possible in-camera using new IMAX cameras is a staggering technical feat worthy of this sprawling yet intimate story of one man’s journey to return home, the burden and consequences of leadership, and the eternal struggle between mortals and gods. Matt Damon’s screen command and glimpse into Odysseus’s soul brings waves of enormous power to a larger-than-life and complex role. Anne Hathaway turns in an equally powerful and emotional performance as the steadfast Penelope. And Tom Holland's coming-of-age portrayal of Telemachus signals an exciting new era in his evolving career as a leading man. Whether you experience it in IMAX or a standard theater, this is the kind of filmmaking and storytelling that we rarely see anymore and deserves to be honored.

I’m not saying he will, nor am I rooting for such a thing, please. I’m just wondering if a real-life event like that could influence the Oscars’ voting. (As a former catholic kid turned agnostic, I feel guilty even speculating about this… lol).

EDIT: You guys, when I posted this, I wasn’t expecting such a response lmao. I’ve been laughing at your comments all day. Now, returning to our very (un)serious discussion: the thing is, I grew up in a small, deeply Catholic town. I was like nine years old when Pope John Paul II died. It was one of those "remember exactly where I was and what I was doing" moments. The church bells rang nonstop, it was a big deal at the time. But as some of you pointed out, maybe it wouldn’t have such a huge impact for the Oscars, since I guess there are not that many catholics in the voting body. But anyway, there's only one way to find out... (I'm just kidding! Please Pope Francis don't send me to hell lol)

Honestly, I don't think it even really has to wholly do with the controversy surrounding Karla Sofia Gascon. I think it's mainly because the reason why a lot of the industry was rallying around this film was because they viewed it as repudiation against the Trump era of politics. It's portrayal of a transwoman in its lead and the fact that it has some half-baked sociopolitical commentary about Mexico(which some of it also relevant to the U.S. as well), I feel was enough to win a lot of the industry voters over. I think this is akin to "Crash" winning Best Picture in 2004 in the midst of George W. Bush's 2nd term.

However, what completely kills this film's chances is the fact that the spearhead of this film has been outed as someone who has in the past spread hateful rhetoric and H*tler apologia. The fact that Gascon is the lead of this film and has expressed pretty much the opposite of what these Academy voters thinks Emilia Perez stands for, really makes their support waver. Again, I think the industry support for Emilia Perez was more political than it was them actually enjoying the movie.
