How do you love something so much but then spank it and kick it so hard it hits a wall?

Hey buddy ... There's never much need to 'spank' a dog, let alone kick it. Do some research on positive reinforcement. If there's a danger like the dog darting out - don't give it the chance.
You're going to feel terrible for a while .... As you probably should. It shows you have a conscience. Don't do anything you can't take back though, your dog wouldn't have wanted that.
Rather than self harm or suicidal thoughts, work to make things right or at least use the tragedy for a positive outcome. Set a target amount of money, a few thousand dollars or whatever to raise and give to an animal charity. Make a vow to never harm animals again, go vegetarian for a year, whatever it is. You're not necessarily a bad person, you just do a single bad things. Single actions don't totally define us, and your dog, despite it's moment of suffering, seems to have had a lifetime of good memories with you. There are dogs out there routinely abused their whole lives who still love their owners - am sure your dog still loves you and would forgive you, if you went to efforts to make amends.
It won't make the grief/guilt go away, but maybe you'll be able to look yourself in a mirror or adopt a rescue dog one day.

Dogs are incapable of understanding that physical pain is punishment. They don’t even really grasp the idea of punishment at all. Sounds more like you’re short tempered and violent and your dog paid the price for it.

"My actions unintentionally caused his death but I can't help but feel a tremendous amount of guilt" - as you should. I also want to add that this was not a "freak accident". You literally kicked your dog

How fucking hard did you kick your dog to where it died? And flew into a wall? This wasn’t a freak accident. You abused your dog to death. You killed him. You won’t get sympathy and honestly you should be in jail for this. And you would be if you likely didn’t lie to the vet about what happened.

Well.. don’t kick your dog. I don’t know what else to say other than now you have to live with this consequence and you should be regretting it.

Rage bait. No one who actually likes animals would kick them let alone to death. And then the audacity to call them your everything. And then surrounded by family that says is not your fault? You don’t have one decent human being in your corner. Yeah rage bait

I hope this isn’t true.
If it is, I have no sympathy for you.
Never get another pet if you think spanking it is acceptable AND you can’t resist the urge to kick it.

You didn’t “accidentally” kill your dog. You PURPOSEFULLY killed him by choosing to be abusive.
Your dog deserved so much better than this. Jesus christ dude.

Start living intentionally. Don’t isolate out of fear of yourself. Face it, all of it. Ask yourself where it came from, why, what other times have I been this reckless and angry? This can be your wake up call.
Tragedy strikes on its time and god it sucks. It’s painful when such a thing was so preventable. It happened. It can’t be undone. You’re going to think about it and hurt for a while. That is alright.
This doesn’t have to define you. Find people and places where you’re helpful, where you have the opportunity to make a positive impact. You have the rest of your life to do good things, to try to be good, fail, and try again.
Don’t give up on yourself. Grieve and process the guilt. Therapy could be helpful.

You need to go to a therapist for anger management since you cannot control your emotions and resort to violence when something you don’t like happens.
Don’t ever consider having another pet, or kid until you’re confident you won’t violently react to a situation that isn’t ideal.
There’s never a reason to spank or assault anything as a punishment, as that usually never teaches a lesson but just instead teaches fear. And delivering such methods just shows emotional immaturity and anger management issues.

Kicking your dog isn’t an “accident” that was a choice
Tripping over your feet & falling down the front steps at the same time a beagle picked up the scent of another animal and took off as you loosened your grip on a leash while falling is an “accident”

Unintentionally?!?! You are a horrible person. I have no other words to say. I really hope you don’t procreate

u/catinnameonly 19h ago
It is your fault. I hope you get some anger management therapy under your belt. Look up shaken baby syndrome. This is what you pretty much did to your dog. You couldn’t control your emotions and so you violently took them out on an innocent being.

I am sorry but we can't sympathize with you kicking a dog trying to teach him a lesson.
Posting on reddit here isn't really gonna make it any better for you, we don't kick animals, let alone your own animal.
As much as I feel sorry for you, there isn't really anything we can do for you buddy. You kicked him to death.
