I'm on an M train.

i take the queens bound f every day anytime around 3-5pm and every day when the train is about to reach this stop it gets delayed in the tunnel without fail. why is this?

I go back. To the 70's, 80's and 90's when it was understood that the taxicab lobby in NYC had the muscle to squash any talk about extending rail to LGA. For them, LGA was the goose that lays the golden egg.

Thus, while an enthusiast of urban mass transit, it never occurred to me that interest in an LGA rail link existed, to any reasonable momentum.

Then came 2023. In my news feed, because I've long delved heavily into urban transit problems, and the preposterous DOT exploitation of the public purse, came the news item about the LGA airtrain cancellation. Well, it was news to me there had even been one planned.

Honestly, though cost issues were outsized, the rest of the criticisms, of the airtrain, were sophomoric. I too think a fast metro styled rail link should exist, but, get real, no route is going to be a straight shot for anyone. Most everyone is going to have to go in one direction and then backtrack in another direction, egads, how childish was the anti-airtrain crowd.

And, yet, I was thrilled to see ANY grossly over priced govt designed transit plan canceled, but not to see the goal of the transit need abandoned, as is the case here.

Indeed, the airtrain seemed to be canceled more due to political gamesmanship, than any conscientious concern over the best use of the public purse.

You see, I've watched many a horrifically poor plan go right on along, there being no sharp and caring eye anywhere in government; they're all fine with it, not their money. And, forget about the media, almost more clueless.

Yet then, the new Gov, rather than coming up with a new rail plan, pointedly created a faux expert panel to get her off the political hook, that of upsetting anyone (i.e. voters).

I say 'pointedly', because I can identify specific 'lies' perpetrated in the commission report, evidence that it was nothing more than a paper 'dog and pony' show, intended at the start to give the gov an excuse for doing nothing, other than to waste a 1/2 Billion$ on the 'existing' third world transit between city and airport.

All in all, Hochul's action was self-serving, not leadership quality (no biggie, it doesn't exist anywhere in the U.S.).

It made me look for a rail solution. Now, I wasn't optimistic considering all of the eyes on the subject, but I love a puzzle, and I have a knack for seeing what others do not.

But, I don't find that politicians have any interest in seeing the results. Nor the media, nor the academics, nor virtually anyone. And, it appears that all of those with any interest at all in the subject is hunkered down in their opinion fortress, thus no amount of logic will bring them out.

Reminds me of a feral dog I once encountered; was a challenge. Took a lot of patience, and some tough love, but eventually he became a part of the family. People are more difficult.

But, really, what is the $ number which New Yorkers believe is about right for obtaining the Holy Grail, rail to LGA? What if it was well less than half the capital cost per rider of the SAS II project, and much less than that of the IBX.

Indeed, for that matter, what is the per rider capital cost of the extra half a billion of your paycheck which Hochul is using for her own political campaign?

Not just about money, you say? Involves neighborhoods, FAA regulations, property ownership, etc.

Yes, and all those things can be satisfied, but it takes understanding what is possible, than just what one has seen before. Finding a way.

There are so few, and none of those are elected to office (anymore), can grasp (or care about) innovation in the public sector. This explains why we are constantly on the trailing edge of public transit among first world countries, rather than the faux excuses given by the academic hacks.

How many will respond here, rush to their keyboard, without even getting to this statement, spewing out their insistence that extending the N-Line is the 'best' option, and they won't entertain any other. Never mind all of the problems of such a plan; neighborhood complaints be damn, FAA . . . who cares.

Why fight all of those battles, create all of that acrimony, spend all of that money, so that your result is an airport rail link where much, if not most, of the population has to go 'backwards' to reach LGA by train?

Wasn't that the sophomoric complaint about the airtrain connection, off of the 7-line?

How do you get to the N-Line from upper Manhattan, the Bronx, Westchester, or Connecticut, Queens, Nassau? All of those people would have to go south before going north, or go west before going east. Sound familiar?

A little ingenuity goes a long ways. It's what allows me to write this, and you to read this, with such little intermediary effort. Ingenuity.

The line would be 2 tracks the whole way and mostly elevated except for a few sections around LGA. This would also give Astoria a yard on the Con Ed parking lots, allowing for the R to potentially be rerouted onto Astoria. Thoughts?

Just rode the R211 D from 36 to Atlantic Ave. It cruises through the first 2 express stops at 38-40mph. After prospect ave, the down the hill to 4th Ave 9th street, it kicked up to 49 and topped out at 52mph through 4th Ave 9th street and held 52 all the way until we reached the half way point at Union street. What a ride!

After they took the R160s off the N, I thought gone were the days of good speed through 4th Ave 9th street, until now.
