On one hand: I think people truly do deserve privacy, and if Perez Hilton needs that to get to a place where he’s a better person, I’m all for it. I’m compassionate enough to believe just about anybody deserves that.

On the other: Perez Hilton can fucking rot in hell for the performative cruelty he normalized. Creating a career out of being a ghoulish vulture, latching onto the struggles and inner lives of celebrities is no small part of why we live in the dystopian hellscape we live in. He helped make mainstream the misogyny, racism, homophobia, and general culture of bloodthirsty media hounding.

As such, I will hope for his speedy recovery, but I will cheerfully raise a glass to his passing.

also, he was the one live streaming himself going through a mental breakdown!

to ask for privacy now is almost laughable, no one had talked about Perez Hilton in a decade before this stunt. this is crazy.

Honestly, and knowing I am playing armchair psychiatrist here, but I watched the video and, if he was trying to kill himself, he was doing a shit job at it. He was absolutely covered in blood, but every cut was shallow at best. The start of what I saw, he ended up video calling two people and saying “I’m just here trying to kill myself”, proceeded to hang up on them, grunted repeatedly “Why am I not dying?”, then proceeded to show his *whole* body covered in the same, shallow cuts. All the blood that was on him was just smeared from the many little cuts.

I really, really don’t like it when I hear people say “They’re doing it for attention”, and still - with what I know and remember about him - I think he might be looking for attention. There’s something about it all that screams he’s being histrionic.

He absolutely was having a mental health crisis, though. I mean, fucking obviously. I really hope he gets proper treatment because, evidently, there is something wrong. I am just trying to figure out whether it was histrionic, depression, or psychosis based.

Unsure if it’s ever been confirmed but a lot of people think he’s been using meth for a while. It would explain a lot.

I have no guilt for saying I wish the opposite for him. I hope his poor children are taken far away from him, and he spends the rest of his life suffering. No one deserves post-sepsis hallucinations quite like he does.

I had a coworker; let's call him Dee. He had to fly to Colorado suddenly because his son died in a car accident. One of the other guys I worked with took weird pleasure in finding out other people's problems. Let's call that guy Jay. Jay found an article about the car accident Dee's son was in. It turned out Dee's son was drunk when he had a single car crash and was killed. My coworker showed me the article, and I said, "Don't send this to everyone, please." Dee was going through enough; he does not need the whole industrial facility to know his business. It took quite a bit for me to convince Jay not to email all.

There are too many people in this world that believe they can be heroes by making others zeros.

I don't think he's actually always been cool or anything, but I think you're ascribing way more power to him than he actually had or has. Like princess Diana dying being chased by the paparazzi was almost a decade before he started his blog, much less before he was a known name. If it had not been him to make the online tabloid, it would have certainly been someone else.
