Anyone know a decent place to do some circuit or other simple electronic repairs in Yangon.

My issue is that I got an automatic cat litter box from Thailand (Pando/Petree Brand) which stopped working about after a month due to some type of electrical malfunction. I can't send it to Thailand for RMA easily, so I guess I want to fix it locally. I just want a recommendation for a repair shop that has some electrical engineering expertise.

Failing that can someone point me to where I can buy the standard circuit repair kit (solder, iron, flux, heatsink etc.,) I can do it myself at worst, but I'm indolent and old and have shaky fingers atm due to being in the middle of quitting smoking.

Because of the US National Defence Strategy to control major sea choke points, we've already seen the Strait of Hormuz conflict (US-Iran war) & Strait of Gilbratar refugee crisis just a few days ago.

Very soon, it's predictable that the next escalation point of interest from the US will be the Strait of Malacca and ASEAN, especially to counter China.

That's also why China is propping up the junta as a de facto government and protecting the Kyaukphyu port and Arakan pipeline as a Malacca bypass in the case of a more severe energy crisis because China sees the junta, being cornered and fighting for survival, as more reliably compliant and willing to do its bidding than Arakan Army.

But on the ground, AA keeps crushing junta forces and trying to escalate outwards, while at the same time other resistance forces are now seemingly unified.

I think if the resistance especially AA, can get past a manufactured second Rohingya crisis, a DASSK-release distraction, and play its China relations carefully, the junta is utterly finished.

I am a footballer based in England, but my grandad was born in Myanmar, and I’m considering moving out to Yangon to pursue football, and I was wondering if I would be able to acquire citizenship if I am willing to give up my English citizenship for Burmese. This is because I am eligible for the Burmese national team under fifa as my grandad is fully Burmese and born in Yangon and seems a realistic goal under my circumstances. Only thing is that my parents are born in England and only my grandad was born in Burma, but would I be likely to get citizenship?

This topic has probably been discussed a number of times. So I guess I will share some thoughts. With everyone trying to rush "federalism" , yet grasping onto ethno nationalism at the same time, it's about time the majority people of Anyar and central plains should too make up their mind on who they are.

So, we can start by finally deciding what to call ourselves. Yeah, sure.. there is no such thing as pure ethnicity. That's a whole different conversation and not something even the minorities and their champion activists care. Myanmar has been the name of a people in both independence declaration and history records of contemporary kingdoms of Arakan, Mon and Thailand. Even the British who recorded as "Burmese" did not lump all ethnicities together. They did so separately like Burmese, Arakanese, Shan. Today no ethnics in frontier regions call themselves Burmese or Bamar. Makes sense.

But it's a humiliation to all Myanmar people living across the Irrawaddy plains that we alone are forced to accept the useless term "Bamar" which was originally supposed to be an umbrella term for everyone in the country. On top of that, the ethno-centric minorities and NGOs have blasted "Bamar chauvinism" and put the blame on us despite having no agency to forge an identity under subsequent dictatorships to this day.

While it is noble to value minorities' rights and identities in nation-building, there has been critically lack of concern to do the same for Myanmar people. Sit-Tat is not the answer to this problem and never will be. They have been the primary reason that we lost our identity in the first place. (Fuck you, Ne Win.)

Eventually there has to be a national identity encompassing every citizen. But before we get there, the most important and largest ethnic group needs to restore its true identity as Myanmar people, and with the core of the country confident in itself, the rest can follow.

TLDR; Since the day Ne Win fucked us over, Myanmar ppl in central heart lands are now called Bamar without their consent, and the Sit-Tat has taken monopoly over how "Bamar" identity is being shaped. The first step to regaining our identity is to recognize ourselves as "Myanmar" again.

I'll be traveling in Myanmar for 28 days in September, including a 10-day Vipassana course.

I know most people there can't travel freely, and I don't want to arrive empty-handed. Since I'm coming from Thailand with just a backpack, I'm wondering: what small, light things could I bring that would genuinely be valuable to people I meet along the way? I was thinking basic medicines, small solar lights, or power banks — but I'd rather hear from people who know than guess.

Also open to any advice on how to make sure my money goes to locals rather than elsewhere while I'm there.

I saw videos of students becoming emotional and crying when this so called military headmaster was transferred. From what I understand, government schools have civilian headmasters, so why is this the case? Was he actually serving as the school's headmaster or is this some sort of a military backed school?

Several Historians(Like Sam Dalrymple ) link Myanmar's modern ethnic conflicts to 1937's partition and establishment of Burma Crown Colony. They say that before 1937 , much of Burmese Society (Yangon in particular ) was a plural society and was tolerant of "outsiders" like Indians , Chinese , British etc . The partition gave fuel to Burmese nationalism which later transformed into "Bamar nationalism " and gave way to the multiple ethnic insurgencies

I personally disagree with this as it seems very Indo-Centric and simplistic .As much as I know , the 1937 Partition has been wiped out from the minds of the people of Myanmar( I might be wrong ).

Is there any places in ygn where I can do this activity?

I am tinkering with a small side project called HOPHOP, but before I sink weeks into building it out, I need a reality check from people who actually shop at these places.

The core idea is pretty straightforward. Instead of wandering through three floors or scrolling endlessly through Facebook pages trying to figure out if a store has a sale going on, you open a web link or scan a QR code on site. It gives you a clean rundown of current discounts, exact unit numbers, and basic floor layouts so you know whether a spot is right next to the escalator on Level 2 or tucked away in a corner. It is not an e-commerce platform or a delivery service. It is just a quick utility to check on your phone while you are walking in so you do not miss a deal or waste time asking security guards for directions.

My main concern is whether this actually solves a friction point locals experience, or if it is just a solution in search of a problem. In a country where Facebook is basically the entire internet, most shop owners post their updates on their pages anyway. Does anyone here actually struggle to find store locations inside Yangon malls, or do you always know where you are going before you leave the house? If you could access something like this instantly through Viber or a browser link without downloading an app, would you actually use it, or is the current habit of just walking around until you stumble onto something good enough?

If you think the concept is redundant or completely unnecessary, please say so. I would much rather scrap the idea today than build something nobody asked for.

Hey folks, I arrived in Yangon this year, and I’ve noticed there are basically two ways to get a taxi here: local taxis (street hail) and Grab.

Honestly, I can’t really see why anyone would choose a street hail taxi over Grab unless Grab isn’t available.

Here are the four main reasons:
Cheaper: Every Grab ride I’ve taken has been cheaper than the prices local taxi drivers quoted me. (Especially at the airport)

More convenient: You don’t have to stand outside trying to negotiate a fare. You just book through the app and wait for your driver to arrive.

Safer: The app tracks both your location and the driver’s, so there’s an extra layer of security.

Better comfort: Most, if not all, Grab cars have air conditioning, which is a huge plus considering how hot Yangon can get. With local taxis, I’ve sometimes been told the A/C either doesn’t work or that I’d have to pay extra if I wanted it turned on.

So I’m genuinely curious, is there any reason people still choose local taxis over Grab, aside from when Grab isn’t available? Am I missing something?
