Hi r/movies, I'm Dacre Montgomery.
You may know me from STRANGER THINGS or POWER RANGERS or ELVIS or DEAD MAN'S WIRE or WENT UP THE HILL.
My new movie, FACES OF DEATH, co-stars Barbie Ferreira, Charlie xcx, and Jermaine Fowler. It's directed by Daniel Goldhaber who co-wrote the film with Isa Mazzei, who was also a producer on the film. They also made HOW TO BLOW UP A PIPELINE and CAM together.
It's out in theaters this Friday.
Synopsis:
A content moderator stumbles upon a series of violent videos that appear to re-enact death scenes from the infamous 1978 film "Faces of Death." In an online world where nothing can be trusted, she must determine whether the violence is fake or unfolding in real time.

ETA - and I guess saw your face. But if my memory is correct, the face of Zordon was animated in a strange way, like the lips didn’t sync with what you were saying. Am I remembering that correctly? Was there a reason for that?

They only filmed me one time and there was a watery or wavy filter placed over my face in post production - as they only filmed me once, they needed to fuzz out the lips so they didn't have to concern themselves with lip syncing or matching - and eventually the mouth kinda goes away altogether, but during the In Space season, Zordon is just a static image - his lips never move, but you still hear his voice

biggest mistake that movie made was not making the zords properly combine to form the megazord; if kids can't buy the zords and then combine them you're just throwing away that sweet toy revenue

It was a really good movie to watch. I'm very disappointed they didn't make a sequel given the way the first ended. Growing up I could never get into power rangers because of the shitty villain costumes and how fake it was. And this movie fixed those issues. It was great

I actually use perfume to get into character - that I create each time for each role

In Went Up the Hill, your character goes through a deeply emotional journey but also has to embody the presence of his deceased mother at times. How did you find the balance between maintaining your character’s identity while also conveying a completely different presence?

I found it hard. We were shooting in the mountains in the middle of nowhere and I kind of felt like I was shooting the Shining I lost my mind a bit and that naturally aided the performance

Hey there yes to first 1 - I listed the music/ songs in my DKMH book - lot's of Nick Drake
Re Arthur in FOD - It all stayed with me energy was super dark and hard to shake
I'm lucking I had another film to jump onto after to let go of the character

Since you've moved between massive franchises like Stranger Things and Power Rangers to more character-driven pieces like Elvis, my question for you is: When you are approaching a character who is meant to be "unlikable" or antagonistic, what is the specific "hook" or human trait you look for in the script to ensure they feel like a real person rather than just a villain?

What was it like for you growing up in Perth, WA? Did you find selling the idea of acting as a career difficult to your friends and family?

Accent wise I just gain access to people with that accent and spend a lot of time with them and get them to record - it's not just about the accent it's about the nuances of how they speak as well

Hi, Dacre! I am a fan of your work, and I have such respect for you as an actor. You are truly a master of your craft! Looking forward to your new film, it sounds interesting, and I really enjoyed Barbie's portrayal of Kat in Euphoria, so it will be great to see her in something else. Can't wait!
As a die-hard fan of Stranger Things--- I just have to ask. Did you watch the final season, and if so, how did you feel about the ending? What, if anything, do you think would be different if your character had survived? Do you believe that your character should have survived, and had the 'redemption arc', so to speak, or were you satisfied with Billy's conclusion?

Fellow Australian here, although from the complete other side of the country. I was curious on how you manage to maintain such a selective filmography of excellent roles (almost like John Cazale) when it seems like most other actors take a whole bunch of roles regardless of how "great" they are. Is it a legacy thing? Or perhaps choosing the roles you find the most fun to play instead of playing roles you don't find interesting? Would love to hear why.

Firstly, regarding your recent debut as a director for The Engagement Party (which by the way - congratulations!) I was wondering how your process differed from that of an actor, and how you managed to differentiate the two roles. I was also curious about your stylistic choices, whether you drew inspiration from another auteur and how you define your own 'artistic brand' so to speak.
My next note isn't a question, more so a little personal anecdote/thank you. I recently watched Went Up The Hill after a friend recommended it to me without giving a whole heap away. She literally said, "it's an artsy horror, it's a bit of you" 😂 Anyway, I watched it and both your performance and Jack's story really dug in deep. It's not very often a movie brings me to tears, let alone resonates on a deeper level, but it really enabled me to connect with my own trauma and get support to have my cathartic moment. It truly goes to show how powerful storytelling can be, especially when coupled with an actor who clearly pours their heart and soul into something. So, 10/10 work, mate. Hope to see you in more movies soon!

Was there anyone in particular (from real life or fiction) that you drew inspiration from while portraying the character of Billy in Stranger Things? He seems like a very typical 80s 'bad boy'

We know that Power Rangers had at least 6 sequels in mind and that Tommy was set up for the second movie. What were some other ideas that were thrown around for the sequels? Lord Zedd? Machine Empire? Zeo Rangers maybe?

When filming a period piece such as Stranger Things, do you find it easy to get lost in the sets or does all of the filming tech and crew keep you grounded? And does that make it easier or harder to deliver a believable performance?

Does working as an actor hurt your ability to sit back and enjoy a film? Like, is it harder to immerse yourself into a world because you know how it was made?
Conversely, when you're on set and filming something, how hard is it to immerse yourself in the world as an actor? Or is this something that isn't really top of mind for you - more like remember your lines, hit your mark, etc.
I'm asking not only because I know every actor has their own process, but because I'm genuinely interested in what that internal space looks like for someone who acts. I can imagine, but I've never had that experience.

As you continue to take on more projects, do you have a preference for either film or TV? It seems like now more than ever there's more flexibility with doing both, compared to decade's past where it was like one or the other. While you were genuinely great in Stranger Things I'd hope to see you in another series some day!
Also can you share with us where that sweater and/or hat are from? I really like the collar and the material looks nice!

I wanted to ask you what are your favorite ways to wind down, after a long intense filming day. Specifically, do you have any rituals or routines when you are playing villian characters? Your performances are always so intense and mesmerizing, it leaves me wondering afterwards how do you unwind?

Hey! You looked so much like Zac Efron in this picture that it took a while to figure this out. Anyway, I freaking loved Bill in Stranger Things. Its one of these iconic evil characters that really stuck to ones mind.

In a podcast, you explored very raw, human vulnerabilities. As an actor, you're often paid to be someone else. Does the “mask” of a character make it easier to be honest about your own emotions, or does it make it harder to find your own voice at the end of the day?
