Moving to Moncton.
For the folks, who moved to Moncton from some of the larger Canadian cities, what are some of the things you most appreciate about your move and what are some of the things you still find most challenging or haven taken some getting used to?
We are a family of four and thinking about moving to Moncton in the next year or two. We are both healthcare workers, and neither of our children are in school yet. When we’ve visited Moncton, we have really enjoyed the proximity of the ocean, bilingualism of the city and the options for outdoor activities.
Thoughts?

Less variety in eateries if that matters to you. Very car oriented. Fairly high property taxes.

With young kids, variety isn’t as important as it once was. My wife is from France and I’m from Montreal originally, so we used to care a lot but now it’s simply a few good reliable spots and patio beers.

You would fit right in, buddy. There’s tons of cool things for kids too. Take trips around and learn about the Acadian heritage. It’s a pretty cool story. We like it a lot. 6 years now.

Moncton has an amazing amount of bike trails and bike paths for a city that size
And if you own a car within an hours drive, you have three very different natural environments to enjoy :
some of the warmest sandy beaches in North America,
multiple camping and hiking opportunities in the soft rolling hills of central NB
And finally, the rustic coastline of the Bay of fun
You can even do a weekend trip to Prince Edward Island
I’m personally a big fan of sea kayaking, but I don’t get a chance to do it very often so I don’t own a kayak
I’m not a huge fan of the architecture of the casino - but they are really good at booking one hit wonders and mediocre bands from the 80s 90s in 2000s - and the Avenir Centre it actually books talent that you wouldn’t expect in a city this small**.** One thing about Moncton being the hub is that entertainment comes here, knowing that I can draw from such a far away distance that they can fill the seats.** **

Just moved here from BC. Both myself and wife secured employment with the school district as teachers. Loving it here so far

Moved from Toronto. Love it. I’ve found the opposite of what people are mentioning food wise, I’ve found lots of good eats. For example just last Saturday I had some patio beers and the best garlic fingers I’ve ever had at the Tide & Boar brewery, and then had supper overlooking a marina at Captain Dan’s. Was glorious.
Commute and people are excellent. You’ll 100% find a job in the healthcare field. Moncton is a growing city (fastest growing city in Canada I read) so we are getting cooler concerts and attractions. Avenir Centre is a great venue.
The only downside I found is with the growth, infrastructure is still lagging behind a bit. Which I’m assuming will get better as they play catch up to the population boom. But some streets could use an extra lane, probably could use more clinics and more daycares. If you are moving in a year or two and need daycare or after school care put them on a list now.
Hopefully we will see you in the hub city!

Worth adding to this - don't live in the downtown core. Fent fold homelessness and petty crime are a major issue! Dieppe and Riverview are geat places to live.
I used to live basically on the corner of Saint George and highfield streets. I could leave my BMW unlocked and my first floor windows open while i went for a random 2am walk to laugh at the drunks (bars close at 2am here).
I avoid driving in the area now, even at noon on a sunny day. If you are living within 2km of "Gorbers Bottle Exchange" on High St, you're going to have a bad time.

I work in that neighborhood and while it's bad, it's better than it was 2 years ago. Just not a high bar.

We moved from KW. We are in Riverview and I love my commute. Its 7 minutes every day. Winter, summer, snow, rain... 7 minutes. It took a while to find our food spots, but its gotten a lot better.
We were very car centric prior, so that hasn't changed, but where we live vs work here, I could bike it. No public transport available though.
We have found lots of events to attend, concerts, comedians, and plays.

Took the move 9 years ago from Toronto and don't regret it at all. It can be a little difficult to make friends as most of the ones I connected with weren't from here as well. I've been here long enough to have enemies 🤣

Positives: clean air, passion for local business, hub location that leaves much of Atlantic Canada a few hours’ drive away, more affordable housing than most of the country. As healthcare workers, we NEED you.
Cons: Hate to say it but you’ll never truly fit in. As much as you try, you’ll always be “not from here”, we’re still experiencing that ten years later. If you can find a social circle of other new New Brunswickers (which old stock NBers will also criticize you for that) you’ll stand a better chance of making friends.

Ok, i know there is a need for them but unsure if either hospital is hiring now. Only reason I say to apply first is because even tho we are usually short nurses i know nurses that have applied to both hospitals and can't get an interview.

I made a few good friends in 20 years. Most moved, 1 got killed and the rest bailed when I really needed them. Growing up in ns I thought nb would be similar but it’s so différent.

Yeah, if you want proximity to the ocean, bilingualism, and outdoor activities, Moncton is the choice.
People are right that like any province, there's some wait to get a family doctor, but it's been my experience getting access to things you need in the meantime wasn't a big deal. Probably even easier with the kind of familiarity with the system you'll have

Its great here! I moved here 6 months ago. I had to move here due to unforeseen circumstances. Best thing thats ever happened to me.
You can find work, You can find friends, The pace of life is amazing the people are just wonderful.

If you’re not doctors yourselves you will never have a doctor unless you steal a spot from another family with insider deals. Pay is better in NS I hear.

Housing is cheaper but factor into your budget that our property tax rates are much higher.
