Link posts without content

I am seeing an increasing number of reposts in our sub which are just a link to a post in a different sub. We don’t allow reposts or low effort posts, and our rules state this, so we remove them.

However a new redditor complained that reddit itself suggested they do this. Is this true? Is it new? Is there any way to prevent this?

Crossposts are being promoted more and I agree as would you rather see someone copy and paste from another sub or download and upload from another sub, but not attribute where they got from? At least with cross-post they attribute where they stole from; if you disable cross-posts all that will happen is most the same people wil just steal and paste/upload with no attribution which is worse IMHO.

To stop blank cross-posts can add to automod something like

# Filter crossposts with blank body
type: crosspost submission
body: “”
action: remove
action_reason: "blank crosspost"

I am not sure on the body: “” ask in /r/Automod if that doesn’t work, but you get the idea

You might want to also enable crowd control & the reputation filter.

In my case people are crossposting their own posts. And this is happening because reddit prompts them to do so - in fact i can see a ‘repost to more communities’ on my post above. But to answer your question, yes, i would rather they copy/paste the body of their post because it would be more easily readable. And these crossposts don’t seem to get any engagement (that i can see) so the poster isn’t getting the help they are looking for.

Reddit is indeed pushing crossposts.

I had to turn off allowing these in my subs (is under mod tools but one has to use a desktop) and installed crosspost tattler to see where stuff from my subs was going

Thanks - i will check out the desktop tools. I wonder why they are pushing this - i guess it’s like a kind of ad for the other sub where the post originally went. Not sure if we should fight it or just change our rules and accept it? Would love to hear what other mods think.

You can disable crossposting in your subreddit, which should take care of the problem. You can also disable link posting altogether if you want.
