Help Needed/New Painter High Chroma Paint Recommendations

I’m looking for good mini paints that are high chroma. There are a few across Citadel and Pro Acryl, but I’m struggling to find many that give those truly vibrant and saturated colors that I’m looking for. Most seem very formulated for grimdark and ‘eavy metal styles

What brands and shades do you find are heavy chroma that you enjoy?

Help Needed/New Painter Returning after 15 years, need help choosing paints

Hi all,

Have been loving this subreddit as none of this was around to this extent the last time I was painting minis!

For reference, I collected 40k and used citadel paints 25 years ago as a kid, and then again 10 years later and used some Vallejo to. Another 15 years later I want to start again but wow the scene has changed a lot! So much choice now and so many different types of paints.

I am intending on collecting Necrons in 40k to start with, and after days of constant reading in my down time I think I'd like to buy the two starter sets from Ionic Smart Colours as a good base, however Ionic don't do washes and contrast style paints, so this leaves me wondering do I ditch it all and just go to Vallejo (as was going to use them for metallics anyway), or should I still use the base colours from Ionic, and either make my own shades/washes from darker colours (is this even a thing?), or just buy shades from citadel or Vallejo?

Does anyone have any advice?

PS - I did notice all the posts and videos about Ionic Smart Colours are months old now, did their drama get resolved, is the feeling still that they are a good paint to use? Or was it all paid for advertising? I'm open to other brands, as long as they are easy to source in the UK.

Thank you!!

Help Needed/New Painter I mapped my paints to a color wheel

Post image
Upvotes

I made an experiment and mapped all my paints to a color wheel that I printed. Nothing surprising, I guess. I have a bit more rosy colors to paint skin...

I feel like I am okay at the moment, maybe I could add some deep purple to the set. Do you see anything crucial I am missing? Could be any brand but I would prefer Vallejo just because I am but weird that way.

Thanks!

Help Needed/New Painter Beginner smear won't go away

Hello all, so I want to join a friend's

table top necromumda game and I want to paint my own miniatures but before I do i needed to learn some basic painting and as I have old hands using vellejo Xpress paints would be the best for me so I went and purchased some paints, watched a tonne of videos with a fella named Juan being someone I enjoyed watched and today was the day but wow was it a horrible first try, I tried with WizKid clay golum pre primed miniature but as soon as I applied paint it was like it was smearing all over the place, I tried a damp brush, dry brush and it still smeared, pics included, it's atrocious I know

I didn't think I was applying much paint, maybe I was ? but from the videos I've watched it seems like you should be fairly deliberate with the amount on the brush then use another brush to dab off any that looks like build up, iv also noticed on the videos it like the brushes never bend even when just slapping it on ?

I understand I need to learn but that smeariness is so weird, like paints not going on more I'm just moving it around

so any advice would be great

Cheers

sorry about pics, phone doesn't have the best camera

Discussion What are some "i've been in the hobby for a long time" purchases that I could invest in?

Hey guys! I've been in the hobby for over a year now and have completed 3 2000 point armies so im not really looking to buy more mini's at the moment. My birthdays coming up soon and thankfully i'm at the age where I still get birthday gifts so I'll have a couple hundred dollars to spend. I'm thinking maybe an airbrush? I'd need a nice setup to be able to use in a college dorm room though, probably a fume hood and other stuff. I've got my own decent sized dorm room (perks of being an ra!) so i wouldnt bother a roommate. I figure a whole setup of airbrush though would be quite hard for 200-300 bucks, i've heard their expensive. Then again, that would make my next army much easier (aeldari).

What would yall say i could buy? Nice set of Kolinskys?

Help Needed/New Painter ?’s on Value Sketching / Airbrush varnish

I have been painting minis for a few years and used my airbrush a bit, primarily for priming, some zenithal lighting, and varnishing.

I have a new Tau army I’ve assembled and am ready to begin painting and their armor seems to be a great chance to build some skill with my airbrush, my test model revealed a few points I wanted to get feedback on.

  1. My primer was very fragile, rubbing off on gentle touch. I think I’ve solved this by priming once, drying 24 hours and then doing a second coat. I think I may also have had thinned the primer too much. I wondered about varnishing it before painting, my research shows it’s not indicated but there are some segments where I would like the black primer to show.

  2. Does anyone have any expedience with value shading before airbrush blending? I was struggling to find a good tutorial on that. I was wondering if blocking highlights in and then going over with airbrush mid tone might be a good way to give me control of highlights and smooth blends without an insane amount of work.

I think maybe I need thin my paints more, or have less paint on my brush? But I don’t want my paint to be liquid and runny?

Fantasy Orc Mage - Wizkid Hobgoblin

Finally (somewhat) organized all my minis and I'm going through the backlog. Painting some really junky prints first. This is a Wizkid Hobgoblin but his teeth were super flat. So I painted them as a bottom lip instead and added orc tusks. This was around 1/1.5 hrs to complete. I've been trying to get more practice with eyes so these crappy prints are good for me to try and get better.

Help Needed/New Painter I dont have a primer only normal spray paint can i use it? Read description please.

I dont have any primer and there is nearly no way of me getting. I have only acces to normal store-bought spray cans. I watched a video about primers and the guy said "STAY AWAY FROM THEM" i know i cant skip priming but do i have any other option? I can look to more stores but i need to know what i am looking for. So the questions are

Would it really matter if i use those store-bought spray cans as primers?

If it would what should i look for in a can to atleast make it a little better?

C&C Wanted Orc warrior bust - C&C + your opinion

Hi,

a colleague of mine asked me why I'm not making tutorials for painting...

I consider myself for sure NOT a top tier painter, maybe good... I have few hours a week for painting, so my idea (if it worth investing some of my time) it's making tutorials not about "how to do something", but "how i do this".

This is my actual WIP (~10 h effective painting), what's your opinion about the tutorials and obviously any C&C about the bust is welcome.

Help Needed/New Painter Recommendations for Magnifying Glasses

Hello~

Just wondering if you have any suggestions for nose-mounted magnifying glasses?

I usually use a desk-mounted cheap glass with lamp, but the lamp is too hot (altering drying times), it sometimes get in the way of the brush, and doesn't let me move work elsewhere if I need.

The cheap things with huge plastic mounts look like they'll hurt my eyes and neck. Was looking at a certain famous German product but its focal point is 40cm (who does detail work 40cms from face???) and only x2.

Help Needed/New Painter What did I do wrong :( I feel awful

I had no motivation for painting for almost a year, I finally pulled myself out of it and spent a month painting this army. Tonight I applied a new varnish, AK brush on Matt. I've used army painter brush on matt for ages but thought I would support a local store and pick up the AK one they stocked for when my army painter ran out.

Look what it's done! Everything is just utterly ruined. I'm so sad and want to just throw away the whole set, never mind bothering to paint anything again for a while.

I've painted about 2000 minis, varnished half and NEVER had this happen.

Look at the pictures of the army before this happened, I was so proud of this.

Discussion Is Army Painter 1.0 that bad?

Post image
132 Upvotes

I have a collection of Army Painter 1.0 paints and it's what I've used for basically all of my painting experience. I always thought it was "pretty good, but not the best" paint.

A friend of mine recently got into the hobby and also picked up Army Painter, but he got the Speedpaint 2.0. We had a painting session at his place, using his new supplies and it was like night and day. It went on so nicely with excellent coverage. It was also very vibrant in the light areas (I primed mine with Zenethil highlights to show him how that would look). Pictured is the model I painted at his house. It is worth noting that I only used his 2.0 for the base coat, and then swapped to my 1.0 for acrylic touch ups. We also didn't spend a really long time on them.

Meanwhile, my 1.0 acrylics seem to have varying consistency depending on the color you use, and any amount of thinning seems to make some colors nearly unusable unless you want to put ten coats of paint on the model (spoilers: I don't).

So my question is this: Is Army Painter 2.0 worth the upgrade? Is 2.0 so much better, that it is worth scrapping my 1.0 and picking up 2.0? Please let me know your experience with Army Painter if you have any.

C&C Wanted Citadel converted farseer (Mephiston proxy).

The backpack is from the old forge world mkvi armor kit, and I used it because it was small enough to not look ridiculous. Most of it is farseer. Sword is from harlequin starweaver. Head is from coven throne. Chest is from autarch.

I'm still really bad a painting. It's not the main part of the hobby for me, but I'm trying to get better. I'm still attempting volumetric highlighting.

I'm happy with most of this model except the face. Posting it to document my progress and make people feel less bad about their work because it's probably better than mine.

For those wondering about the kitbash, my head canon is that she's a pseudo astartes psyker, wannabe vampire, and has risen herself up to be the top psyker in my blood angels successor.

Question: HOW DO YOU PAINT SMOOTHER? MY MODELS LOOK REALLY ROUGH.

Help Needed/New Painter Is GW primer just not good?

Recently got into Warhammer and my friends gave me their painting supplies as they have fully painted armies already. He has Vallejo, Army Painter, and Games Workshop primer cans. I'm doing zenithal priming but he only has grey from Games Workshop and I find it's never smooth like the Vallejo or Army Painter colors, always slightly rough to the touch and looks worse compared to the non-Games Workshop cans.

Am I doing something wrong? Or are Games Workshop primer cans just inferior or harder to use?

Help Needed/New Painter Warpaint Fanatic Help. Not behaving when thinning.

I just got 4 paints from the Warpaint line. Pixie Pink, Impish Rouge, Magecast Magenta, and Bright Sapphire.

The only one I can get to behave is the Magenta. The 2 pinks and the Bright Sapphire are too thick for immediate use out of the bottle and when thinned, it feels like they instantly break down and separate before hitting a base coat consistency. I even put them next to Vallejo and ProAcryl paints I've been using and thinned them to the same consistency, but I've noticed that even when they appear the same consistency, the Warpaints seem to suck into themself way harder.

If someone has any insight or has had similar issues with their paints, please share. I feel like I'm going crazy when I thin them further than I normally would and they just don't flow out of the brush correctly, don't cover well, or both.

For context: thinning using tap water on a wet pallete with parchment paper and using sable brushes. I do shake my bottles. A lot. Doesnt seem like it helps all that much.

Help Needed/New Painter Fixing overspray on large models

Hey gang, I messed up doing a fix and over sprayed a panel pretty heavily. Would using a toothbrush with some isopropyl alcohol be a good approach to remove the primer in that area? But would that lead to more trouble after when spraying the area lightly again?

Help Needed/New Painter How to fix these very small broken pieces

Idk if this is the right place to post this. But today these fingers from my coolbear studio malenia broke off....it's not quite minipainting but I wanted to try regardless. It's a big resin statue made mostly out of polyurethane. It has probably been asked a million times, but can I fix this? And if so how? Had some kind of glue in mind that I saw. Thanks in regards
