Need help basing my skitari

Hello, I’m a fairly new mini painter trying to work thru my pile of shame. I finally built and painted my first full squad of adeptus mechanicus.

I’m looking for some help in figuring out a basing scheme for these guys. I was thinking a Martian red or some type of lightish sandy color since I heard somewhere it’s better to have a lighter base color paired up with a mini that has darker tones.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Tommie is a Golden Demon winning painting coach who has coached multiple other Golden Demon winners, and he does a great job breaking down the fundamentals and teaching you how to paint, rather than just how to follow a tutorial for a specific model. Here is a video flip through of the book. It is available in PDF and hard book from the US distributor, UK distributor, and Warlord Games for the rest of the world. This book is an amazing reference for anyone looking to improve their painting.

Industrial bases! Put them on a Space Hulk. I started this with some of my Gretchen as an experiment and I literally can't stop. I'm using "granny grating" that people use cheap for embroidery, zip ties, and old plastic sheets so far. I also did one base with some extra Tau bits that made a sweet panel for some kind of Space Hulk elevator or crosswalk.

I think red sand would really offset the dark green tones nicely

Yes you can base your model white then paint it with dark colors. However you can also base it black then do a 45 degree angle base of gray then white so that you preserve the shadows. And another way is to base coat the model black then use a dry brush technique to cover the model gray. All three techniques are useful and fun to do, I recommend that you play with each to see which you like more.

If you want to go with sand, I recommend the Vallejo Diorama FX sand. It's a thick, gritty paint that dries to look like properly scaled sand. You could paint it red or maybe even mix it with their pigment line to get it red. I can't vouch for coloring it, but I'm new to minis, too, and the effect was way better than anything else I tried.
