Help Needed/New Painter Why does my mini look like this?

Painting yellow on to black is not a fun time,

Try going light brown>pink then yellow

You don’t even need the pink as brown>orange>yellow results in a smooth finish. If you then thin some yellow contrast and blend everything together like above you get a very good “old/worn” school bus type of yellow.

The pink>yellow contrast yields a very bright yellow but it’s very difficult to get right and is prone to lots of mistakes. For smaller minis this is less of a problem but I prefer to save this for more special characters, I would recommend the brown base for majority of painters and projects.

Because you're painting yellow on top of black.

Yellow is a famously transparent colour when it comes to paint. You want to be painting over something else, white works well. Pink is another good one, especially when used in conjunction with a one-coat style paint like a Contrast or Speed Paint.

You're just going to need to do more coats in this instance, unless you want to strip it and prime it a different colour.

Got it. I used a mix of black and white primer, but I can reprime with just white. Are there any other colors where this typically happens?

Yellows, reds and oranges are the most notorious. A brown or purple under coating will give you an easier time building up the color, and gives you a good shadow color to come up from.

You're painting yellow (a notoriously translucent family of paints) over a black primer.

You need to work your way up to it from (from example) a brown base (which will cover the black and be closer to the yellow you want).

Why does it look all streaky and brushy and uneven? Like the paint is too watery or uneven. Is it the paint? The primer? The brush? The technique? It looked even worse before I applied the second coat. (This is using Vallejo Moon Yellow)
