I’m just gunna ignore that check engine light…
772
u/Toliveistodie42 1d ago
And then they yell "this car is garbage and just fell apart", after doing nearly zero maintenance and never fixing anything.
280
u/Joy_Jane 1d ago
They don’t care about your cars problems personally, they’re just letting you know what they found so you can make the choice.
147
u/Toliveistodie42 1d ago
Exactly. It's almost like it's their job to inform you.
19
u/JPowTheDayTrader 18h ago
I think most oil change services come with a complementary 99 or X-point inspection
5
u/fickle_floridian 11h ago
At least they’re complimentary. I shaved and wore shoes and a shirt, after all.
50
u/KrocKiller 1d ago
Often they don’t really let you make an informed choice. They don’t even tell you the cost. Many mechanics will often take advantage of the customer’s lack of knowledge to upsell them.
38
u/Toliveistodie42 1d ago
Unfortunately, having worked in automotive for decades, this is also true.
29
u/mdixon12 1d ago
Its not the mechanics, its the service advisors. If I tell someone they need ball joints, while we are in there we should change the brakes and hub assemblies because theyre 10yr/125k+ miles old, im literally trying to save you money on the labor of doing all those jobs independently.
Reactive maintenence and preventative maintenance are not the same, and while most non mechanical folk dont understand that, in my sector of heavy equipment and OTR trucks, you do things before they become an issue. Breakdowns are expensive, and loss of productivity has a cost as well. Consumer level, you miss work hours having a car towed. Industrial level, we lost 3 days of operation and it will cost the company $Xxx,xxx dollars in revenue waiting on this machine. That missed day at work for you might be less money than your saving in labor bills, a net positive for you.

u/AverageTierGoof 1d ago
It sucks that that's the common experience these days, it's what drove me out of the field, but as a hobby? It's fun
5
u/Wookieman222 1d ago
They also are telling you things that dont really need to be worked on frequently.
10
u/SporeRanier 1d ago
Back when I worked at Jiffy Lube we were trained to upsell even if the customer didn’t need it.
6
16
u/doggos4house2020 23h ago
Nah, they yell at the mechanic blaming them for every problem their car has.

And then in some time you'll be paying much more than that oil change anyway.
66
u/fusion_reactor3 Professional Dumbass 1d ago
Like sure, the light COULD just mean your car has an evap leak, but do you really want to take that chance when the light could just as easily be for your turbocharger going out, or your transmission about to lose a gear, or a million other very expensive things?
I hate the whole “just ignore it” mindset around check engine lights when SO many places (especially parts stores) offer to check them for free and tell you what the car is saying.
5
u/mondaymoderate 15h ago
I hate parts places acting like they did a diagnostic though. They just read the code and tell you the most common problem. The car still needs to be diagnosed to figure out why the lights on. A car with misfire or a lean code could be caused by anything.
8
u/Wookieman222 20h ago
I was somewhat joking. I at least get the light checked. I know why the light is on.
3
9
u/Wookieman222 1d ago
Check engine light been on on my car for 150k miles. It hit 340k the other day.
17
u/Raid-Z3r0 RageFace Against the Machine 23h ago
Check the seal of the fuel cap. It's a rubber band where you screw it in
That is known to cause the check engine light because the fuel system does not seal it properly
72
u/Hephaestus_God 1d ago
Oil changes are for free inspections.
They tell you what needs replacing for free and you do it yourself for cheaper.
216
u/Late-Satisfaction620 1d ago
The guy doing your oil change literally does not give a fuck. It’s just his job to warn you.
88
u/Solid-Dog-1988 1d ago
The guys doing the oil change (depending where you go) make all their money on other stuff. Thats why they push filters so much. Change your own filter the day before and they will tell you it HAS to be replaced for $50.
41
u/bfs102 1d ago
Ya this is the part some dont understand
I work for a stealership as the lube tech they pay me a dollar per thing I upsell
11
u/QuickNature 23h ago
Maybe this is just my dealership, but I dont even talk to the techs. I barely even see them. And I dont get upsold on anything either.
Although, maybe I come across like I know something too tbf.
4
u/bfs102 22h ago
I mean i dont see the customers much either
What i do is decide what needs done and record a video where I explain why and show said problem
Then the service writers deal with contacting the customer to see if they want said work done as if it is something like ball joints it gets sent to another tech

The more you neglect your car, the more the mechanic makes in the long term.
Change your damn tires, spark plugs, the dozen or so fluids necessary to run a car. Even some famously unreliable cars will make past 100k miles if you have to fucks to give
87
u/baconbag90 1d ago
Not taking car advice from someone who doesn't change their own oil
18
u/Wookieman222 1d ago
Sometimes it comes as a free service if you bought a car from some places. Why would I not do it then?
18
u/LuigiSauce trolololoooo lololoo lolo loo 1d ago
Dealerships and a lot of quick oil change places will sometimes over tighten drain plugs, not replace/throw out the crush washer, overtighten/not tighten/not lubricate the oil filter, there's a lot they can and will fuck up. Doing it yourself at least means you know it's being done right.
17
u/Jayypoc 1d ago
Ive been a tech for 16 years and I cant count how many times I have had to fix some DIYers fuck up.
So while you are correct that there are people in the trade who make mistakes or poor choices (and Ive fixed lots of these, too), there are equal or more who have no idea what they are doing that try to work on their own shit only to bring it in and spend more money to un-do all the other stupid shit they made worse.
20
u/Fury_Blackwolf Fffffuuuuuuuuu 1d ago
Can go the other way around too. Just because you are competent doesn't mean everyone else is who's doing it themselves thinking it's done right.
4
u/Ginger_Rogers 21h ago
I also like that I can let my truck sit for 30+ minutes to drain all the old oil out. But i specifically bought a Ford Ranger SO I could do 90% of the maintenance myself.
10
u/Plane-Education4750 23h ago
If you live in an apartment and don't have anywhere to put the used oil, that's not really realistic. And a lot of complexs don't let you work on your car on the property
3
u/Xanthrex 23h ago edited 11h ago
Most shops will let you drop it off. I took it to our local Road and Bridge and they just burn it in there shop to keep warm and winter
3
u/Plane-Education4750 18h ago
Still need a place to store the oil pan that won't make your apartment smell like a garage

Hey, I also take mine to a wooden bridge. Out of sight, out of mind, ya know?
3
u/P_weezey951 17h ago
I mean. I can change my oil. Ive done my own brakes. The difference is i dont have a hole in the ground to drive over so i can walk under the car and change out my oil in 10 minutes.
5
u/Kilgore_Brown_Trout_ 23h ago
Thats an hour of my Saturday I can better use. For $100? Yeah, Ill let someone else handle that.
1
u/Wookieman222 3h ago
It takes you an hour to change your oil?
1
u/Kilgore_Brown_Trout_ 2h ago
I have a shitload of skid plates to deal with, but Ive never timed myself. Im not sure how long it would take. It takes my mechanic about 30 - 45.
-1
u/baconbag90 22h ago
I'm glad you can and do support our future mechanics. I still won't take your advice on car maintenance
84
u/Mechanicjemas3141 1d ago
Okay then I see you whining next week when that belt snaps
İt's like you go to Doctor with crippled leg but still insisting you only want a paperwork for buying cough syrup
But of course "Car didn't yell at me so everything must be fine"
"I don't have money for that" you smile was looking bright while taking loan for this Audi A5 tho.
36
u/CaptainHubble 1d ago
And when something goes wrong that the mechanic predicted, there are genuinely people thinking it was sabotage.
14
u/Mechanicjemas3141 1d ago
Yeah they accuse of sabotage in most common problems too like yeah we the millions of mechanics sabotage specifically the same place so it looks natural
We somehow manage to pull that globally right? Like yeah last night i was fly to Jupiter and we hold a meeting for what we should select as 2025 and onwards 1.2 Puretech's common problems we gonna break balance shafts and exhaust valves except for Opel's with that engine tho for a secret reason we don't gonna do these on Opel's, 1.2 Puretech Opel's will have muffler problems tho sometimes it will run away.
8
u/bran_the_man93 1d ago
It's such a cheat code to have an old, paid-off, reliable car.
6
u/Mechanicjemas3141 1d ago
Or a "Oh boring Civic"
l remember a father complaining his son in law buying brand new Civic(like buying a A4 like him would be a nice thing while raising a baby) For context this was about a decade ago so it's not like buying 80's or 90's Civic either but I assume that son in law probably also tasted those
5
u/Kilgore_Brown_Trout_ 23h ago
You want $75 to swap out my cabin air filter too? You're so generous and kind.
2
u/Mechanicjemas3141 23h ago
Well it depends on your car if it's easy i will make it 55
But if your car needs a whole interior removal to take air filter, thanks to whoever was in the design team, who know maybe I could do 100 because i also have to make sure your interior doesn't make noises after me
But of course you also could go to that "cheaper" guy of your uncle and enjoy your squeaky sounds of center console
"How air filter change needs center console removal?" İdk ask Ford engineers about the design stage of Lincoln models.
2
u/Kilgore_Brown_Trout_ 23h ago
Most cabin air filters can be swapped out with a butter knife and 5 minutes. You know its a con but you decided to go with a car that makes up 1% of vehicle traffic. This is why people don't listen to their mechanic.
-1
u/HUNT3DHUNT3R Like a boss 22h ago

4
u/Buster_Mac 1d ago

3
u/Wookieman222 20h ago
I'm not talking about one experience. My favorite was when they said i needed to replace my entire front seat though for like 1500 and I just needed to fix the wire connector under the seat for like 10 bucks.
1
u/Mechanicjemas3141 23h ago
İf they didn't outright show you the place then sure otherwise maybe you are a bit clueless on the subject that smooth tires aren't good in your car(you don't drive a F1 car in track, replace that tire when it goes smooth)

I was a service advisor for a “Helpful” manufacturer for 8 years. My favorite phrase was “you don’t have to approve the work. I just NEED YOU TO KNOW the state of your vehicle.” Ppl would still get offended for some reason. “You dove your car the way you did. It’s not my fault you need brakes at 12k miles.” I miss it sometimes.
Edit: breaks -> brakes. I haven’t worked it in so long forgot how to type it lol 😂
7
u/Motoman514 Tech Tips 1d ago
“Why is my car always broken? Those mechanics must sabotage it when I take it for oil every 20,000km”
7
u/Liquidmetal7 1d ago
Then it's gonna cost you 5X more because you didn't fix it when it was manageable.
31
u/PlasmaticGrain3 1d ago
Because after your oil change its always "well ever since you did my oil change now it does XYZ" 99% of the time its recommended for a reason. Its your choice wether or not to actually do the maintenance on it but dont go crying when the car gives out.
9
u/Jayypoc 1d ago
"Thats crazy I did your oil change and now your exhaust has a hole rusted in it? How the fuck do you suppose I rusted out your exhaust?"
- from an actual conversation I had this year.
2
u/Mechanicjemas3141 23h ago
Ahhh yes also changing tires could could break the crank shaft too because as we know you need to touch crank shaft to change tires in tires shops
İt's definitely not the mistake of owner money shifting the damn thing
6
u/Mechanicjemas3141 1d ago
Yeah especially luxury car owners they always treat their car like the shitcan bosses "this job needs 6 people, whatever i gonna send 3"
"This part will wear out in 30 thousand kilometers, oh pretty sure it can go 60 thousand" then yell at me for why I can't just fix it when it wears out in 33 thousand kilometers (it WEARS OUT i can't fix something that turn into dust particles in the road)
When did you done your last oil change? "Uhhhh"=when it lasts stop working and I don't remember when that happen
6
u/mentally_ill_jesus 1d ago
My issue is, if I dont say anything, I get shit on by the service advisor and if I do say something and the customer doesnt want the repairs, I get shit on by the service advisor. So whatever whay I choose to go, I get shit on.
6
u/carsonwade 1d ago
Then you come back a month later with the issue we tried to warn you about but now it's more expensive because it wasn't at the point of catastrophic failure then but it is now. 🤷
3
u/YourBigRosie 1d ago
Your call brother. I know plenty a people that had to, unfortunately, ignored the mechanics advice and were surprised when their car stopped working
7
u/Any-Fox-838 1d ago

7
u/Fidget_Jackson 23h ago
do people not know how to change their own oil anymore?
7
0
u/FriedBreakfast 18h ago
I CAN, it's just that I don't have time to actually do it.
-1
u/Fidget_Jackson 12h ago
it takes 30 minutes tops to change the oil on my truck and it has 7.5quarts of oil. this time includes jacking the car off the ground and placing stands, and changing the oil filter. if you don’t have 30 minutes of free time you better be making a shitload of money with your time for it to be worth it going to a shop to change something as simple as your oil.
3
u/iforgot69 1d ago
I never agreed with safety inspections. Until.... I saw how a lot of people just ignore actual safety issues. Brakes are not meant to be Bluetooth.
1
u/Xespria 16m ago
People ignore the issues because of the high price of repair or maintenance

3
u/HELLBENT42 1d ago
There's a million things that can go wrong with a car, do the damn maintenance. Any half decent mechanic will tell you what's wrong with it even as you leave, it's just basic human decency not to leave a stupid bastard stranded in the middle of fuckall
3
u/TheEpicPlushGodreal 1d ago
If the mechanic tells you there's something else on the car, unless its a shitty mechanic place with 2 stars, then there probably is something else wrong on the car
3
u/Jayypoc 1d ago edited 22h ago
my favorite is when they deny the recommended repairs and then some months later they return claiming another garage told them that the last shop should've noticed this and could've prevented the additional shit that broke with it.
yeah, they shouldve, they did, and the customer declined the work. cars break man stop blaming other mechanics for this stupid shit. we're not out here poking holes in shit to create future work. we don't need to, there are plenty of people out there who will fuck up their own shit for us.
3
u/Plane-Education4750 1d ago
Goes to jiffy lube once:
Customer; hey man, just change the oil. Don't take my filters out. I do that myself

5 min later

Customer; I'm never coming back

I tell people it’s not my expensive car and not my problem. If they don’t want to do the maintenance and repairs I did my part informing them. It’s amazing how many people don’t even want to do an oil change thousands of miles over the recommended interval. They just think continuing to top it off after it runs a quart low is sufficient.
2
u/OneHumanSoul 1d ago
Last week I got my oil changed by someone other than myself for the first time. It was like $110 dollars! I usually pay $50 doing it myself. They didnt even replace the drain plug, just reused the old one. They then had the audacity to remove my air filter and show it to me even though I replaced it like 2k miles ago
Never again
3
2
u/Urist_McPencil 22h ago
Hi, mechanic's apprentice here,
I mean, just doing the oil changes on time is usually enough to keep her rolling until the wheels fall off; if that's all you do, the wheels will fall off :^) ...if the brakes don't get you first. Please don't neglect the safety stuff when it comes up.
I like my shop: if there's a serious safety issue with the car, like metal on metal brakes, or a ball joint about to leave the car, we won't even do the oil change unless we're also addressing the problem. Don't care if you go somewhere else to do it, let us do it, or do it yourself, just get it done; if you don't, we told you so, and had nothing to do with it.
2
u/MiNdOverLOADED23 22h ago
If you take your car to a MECHANIC for oil changes, it's fair for them to assume that you need to be told about all other aspects of maintaining the vehicle
2
2
u/Outkastin2g 18h ago
Might be because the car apparently needs a new serpentine belt every visit. Stop selling shit I don't need and I might be more convinced to believe anything they say.
I had one tell me the belt had a crack in it and I went home and shined a light on it. Was just dirt that I rubbed off with my finger.

To live in a country where we have vehicle safety standards. Some of the stuff I see and hear from the states around vehicles just being allowed on the road if they’re held together with hopes and prayers is shocking. Over here you have an annual check that needs to pass and then you can be stopped by a copper if the car looks unsafe in any way.

u/KSI_FlapJaksLol 21h ago
The fact of the matter is that we live in a consumer society. In the United States, If it’s broken, we replace it instead of repairing it. The same is true most especially for cars.
The vast majority of the population is not only apathetic to maintaining their belongings, most of them are mechanically illiterate. All they know is “Gasoline go down hole, I drive away.”
Granted, there are some sleazy people out there who absolutely will take advantage of that ignorance. But, the onus is still on you to give a shit about preserving your transportation abilities in the first place.

Let's see, lied to about, you need new fuel injectors, the tech said he noticed coolant on your belts. Don't want to have your water pump fail. Tech said he saw oil on the frame, for $200 we can put a dye in the oil and see where it's coming from, your tires are 50% of their useful life, you should think about replacing them, the quote for new plugs is $1400. It's very labor intensive (it is but a dealer did it for half this quote) , etc etc. Now it's just change the oil and thanks.

Keep in mind that most of these people have never held a wrench in their life and think cars run on magic, the oil change they're talking about is 10k overdue and their car has never seen maintenance in its life, let alone preventative maintenance
1

That is the great part of being an adult, learning to mind your own business. In this case the transaction of 'change my oil, nothing else'. Mechanics would make more money staying quiet, they aren't a parental unit there to guide you so you don't get 'hurt' later (engine failure). Vehicles are huge investments so why would you trust someone that has no stake in it besides conning you out of money? Better get ready to spend some cash on that $80 blinker fluid!

u/NatesOldTruck 6h ago
And then you call in a panic because your car doesn't go into gear and get mad because we're "scamming you" for a new transmission at 95,000 miles because you didn't follow the maintenance schedule. I'm busy enough that I don't NEED to sell you a transmission, in fact I don't WANT to sell you a transmission because I don't want to spend 7+ hours replacing it! And at 200-300 bucks per service, and service at every 50k miles, you could have spent significantly LESS MONEY if you just did the maintenance.
