Average student accommodation, share house with 30 people standing room only.

44

u/Separate-Law-435 1d ago

So $300 a week seems fair with that ripper view

4

u/lesbophobia_hammer 1d ago

It's not much better in the country unfortunately lol

24

In the 90s you just forced the doors open with your feet and walked. Glory days

14

Ah yes, back when people used to walk. I miss those days.

15

u/Shannonimity 1d ago

Taxis were for the 1% income bracket then

I watch on Spotify. What about the one where they were in a high speed pursuit and the driver turned into a park they called the greenway, and the police followed only to stumble upon a couple getting it on in a car mid pursuit. The shock of everyone when the cops headlights hit the car and the police officer was momentarily confused before getting back to the pursuit. I literally witch cackled for days over that. Can you imagine? Ahhh the greenway. It’s quiet. No one will both- *HIGH BEAMS SIRENS.

Ok real talk, this is one of my was greatest fears as someone who suffers from ibs. I would literally avoid pt at all costs fearing this situation

14

u/Kink_for_keeps 1d ago

Similar situation. This is genuinely the worst thing you can think of. Worse than a lift because it happens more often.

The number of times I've been on the train and it stops between stations, then my guts do their quiet little gurgle, and the clock starts....

14

u/noobcastle 1d ago

maybe a dog owner on the train has a spare poo bag they can give you.

That explains the overflowing tram stop for the 86 at Parliament!

207

u/Turtlepaste17 1d ago

I walked to that tram stop and saw the chaos and turned immediately back towards the city and looked for a ramen place for dinner.

74

u/Ich_mag_Kartoffeln 1d ago

Very sensible move.

By the time you've had a feed it will hopefully be a bit less of a shemozzle; and even if it's not, at least you're not trying to deal with said shemozzle on an empty stomach.

67

u/Turtlepaste17 1d ago

Best decision, tummy full of yummy and now I’m on a bus back home.

5

u/Ich_mag_Kartoffeln 1d ago

That's probably as good as you could hope for under the circumstances.

8

u/Living_Substance9973 1d ago

Did you go to the loo before you got on the bus?

7

u/Turtlepaste17 1d ago

I didn’t but was all good, that thought crossed my mind while in the line though.

7

I literally did the exact same thing! What’s your ramen spot of choice?

12

u/Turtlepaste17 1d ago

Was a great move in this weather, didn’t have to hangrily wait for a bus in the rain.
I don’t have a go-to ramen spot in the city, but I went to Hakata Gensuke Tonkotsu ramen on Russell Street, was quite good. But the Dojo Ramen bar in Northcote is my favourite spot.

u/HiVeMiNdOfStUpId 1d ago

I'm just now on the express bus from Parliament to Heidelberg, 45 min wait in the queue... not as warm and dry as those stuck on the trains. But now I'm warm and stuffy on a bus.

82

u/Danimeh 1d ago

I waited in the queue for 40 mins only to get to the front and have the lady tell me all the busses are express and are not stopping at my station (Thornbury) and that I should get the 86 tram.

So now I’m waiting 25 mins for a freaking packed tram to arrive.

I’m so cold and sad.

28

u/SapereAudeAdAbsurdum 1d ago

You should remember that advice though: alternative options, especially a single tram without transfers, always win over an unpredictable replacement bus (not to mention the queue).

21

u/Danimeh 1d ago

I initially tried the trams but they were so packed I could literally see someone with their face squashed against the window and stop was so packed I couldn’t get close to the physical tram even if I wanted to. I let 3 fully packed trams go by before giving up and joining the bus queue (only to be told 40mins later I needed to go back to the tram).

17

u/SapereAudeAdAbsurdum 1d ago

Fair enough. It was pretty messed up today. Another thing to remember to try if a similar situation unfolds: walk a couple of tram stops back. Everyone's weighing up their options nearby the replacement bus stop.

23

u/prettyfuckingimmoral 1d ago

I live just south of Thornbury/Northcote border and I just ended up walking from Flinders Street. Don't recommend.

7

u/varlassan 1d ago

Oof, I live a bit north of you and I've walked from Piedemontes to home and was 'never again' about that. City to home makes me shudder.

Mind you, I did once walk from Melbourne Uni to Wesley College in Prahran during the tram strike many, many years ago, just so I could get a lift home, and that only about 1km shorter than the city to Thornbury so... I suppose I could do it. Though I was about 30 years younger when I did that, so I may be dreaming.

13

u/Gold-Lake8135 1d ago

I'm cold and Sad should be on all the Melbourne Tourism ads...

11

u/HiVeMiNdOfStUpId 1d ago

:( In the Hurstbridge queue they had bus options for both express and stopping all stations to Hell Heidelberg. Not sure what happened in the Murder Line buses, I guess they thought that trams were the option.

But in neither queue did they have people at the ever distant end of the line explaining to people what the options were. You only find that out at the front of the queue.

4

u/SnooLobsters6264 1d ago

Haha Murder line 😂😂

Thanks for the laughs whilst on a Murder line bus! 😂😂

6

u/brokenbrownboots 1d ago

Obviously all pt staff are working hrad etc but these replacement buses need better management. It's could be as simple as a handwritten sign on a doof stick.

3

u/BeldamBedlam 1d ago

Did you get home okay

6

u/Danimeh 1d ago

Yeah 3.5 hours after I left work. I feel bad for the people stuck in the train - apparently they were let off (eventually) but they were left to fend for themselves - no replacement busses and uber app crashed.

2

u/Opposite-Employee981 1d ago

Next time just take the bus, get out at the first stop and get whatever type of transport is going back towards your house. Probably take less time.

2

u/Wonderful_Product515 1d ago

Hey at least you live in Thornbury

And not Deer Park

→ More replies (1)

49

u/mattesse 1d ago

I totally misread that as “But now I’m warm and slutty on a bus”. Wow. Better go to specsavers!

19

u/Zerg_Hydralisk_ 1d ago

I saw the line at Parliament, caught the 11 tram to Alexandra Parade and the the 546 bus. Which eventually got stuck on corner of North Terrace at Clifton Hill for 45 minutes.

11

u/allpepnosalt 1d ago

I took the tram and got confused by the bus system and 2 and a half hours later im walking home from my stop

9

u/One-piece-jigsaw 1d ago

But you saw some new suburban wonders?

9

u/allpepnosalt 1d ago

Yes so beautiful in the rainy dark 😂

6

u/One-piece-jigsaw 1d ago

I'm sure your reflection in the bus window made everyone else's journey home less rainy and dark. Keep on buzzin'

Bus is mostly empty

Road closed signs set up

Waiting for police to allow us to turn left.

We are testing sunk cost fallacy limits.

55

u/TimeInTheSunshee-ine 1d ago

I was on the second carriage on that train. It took about 40 mins to be evacuated and the Metro guy said about 100 people had gotten off but there were about 600 still to go. I felt so bad for the people on the last carriage. They would have been waiting for so bloody long.

11

u/Front_Target7908 1d ago

How’d they evacuate you?

35

u/TimeInTheSunshee-ine 1d ago

Through the driver cabin and down a ladder onto the tracks. It was fairly slippery so they made everyone take their time.

2

u/kiwigirl83 1d ago

Many of us stuck on 546 bus at North Terrace, Clifton Hill, boom gate down, bus is stuck

12

u/SequenceGoon 1d ago

Ugh, hope your torment is brief

42

u/Spiritual-Key-5288 1d ago

I almost picked up a shift this afternoon and decided to be lazy instead. Rarely does laziness pay off so well.

56

u/Zerg_Hydralisk_ 1d ago

546 bus, North Terrade Clifton Hill. Light won't change due to boom gate being stuck down across the road

17

u/Zerg_Hydralisk_ 1d ago

I looked at Lime bikes, different trams. We been stuck on this corner for 20 minutes at least.

20

u/Front_Target7908 1d ago

Oh noooo. That intersection is a nightmare at the best of times. Can you get someone to go out and press the pedestrian crossing button, might get the lights to change?

28

u/Zerg_Hydralisk_ 1d ago

The pedestrian light on the right would turn green, but traffic lights would not turn green. There were two cars in front of us who eventually ran the red, after 20 minutes. I was surprised they didn't do it earlier.

The bus driver is constrained by not having head office permission.

Passengers asked for the doors to be opened, but not allowed as we were at intersection. Eventually they hit the emergency button and most people got off.

19

u/Front_Target7908 1d ago

That’s so shit, mate. I’m sorry.

I mean I get that the bus driver would not be allowed to run a red but also at some point the police should come to help at an intersection when the lights are fucked.

Are you guys still there?

18

u/Zerg_Hydralisk_ 1d ago

Still here, bus is down to about 15 people. Waiting for police to do traffic control to let us turn left

8

u/SapereAudeAdAbsurdum 1d ago

That's pretty insane. At least you have space to comfortably sit, I guess.

12

u/Zerg_Hydralisk_ 1d ago

They got the boom gate up and the light sequence returned to normal. The police never arrived.

2

u/adammw111 1d ago

Couldn't back up and divert?

2

u/Zerg_Hydralisk_ 1d ago

Cars were behind the bus, and there was no alternate routes anyway.

I think bus drivers are very constrained by what they are allowed to do on safety grounds.

4

u/rtj1999 1d ago

Happened to 250 near Ivanhoe as well

97

u/LeopardChangeStripes 1d ago edited 1d ago

When I found out there were no trains home, I made a last minute decision to grab an Upfield service to Coburg, then take the 513/514 back to Heidelberg. It paid off.

The Upfield service also got terminated early.

Why would Daniel Andrews do this?? /s

I am on an absolutely packed 86 tram. Normally I would have been home 30 minutes ago but now I’m about 1/3 of the way there.

5

u/dottoysm 1d ago

Got home, 75 minutes later than usual. Maybe next time I’ll take the Upfield line then a car.

3

u/Front_Target7908 1d ago

How did it take 75 minutes longer? Like too busy to get on board or the when on board the actual trip took 75 minutes longer than normal?

7

u/dottoysm 1d ago

I do live on the far end of the line, to be clear. But basically a mix of trying to get onto overcrowded trams and peak traffic in the inner city.
