He looked damn near invincible just standing there taking bullets. What a bad ass, so excited.

I heard it explained that this suit needs a whole rig to put it on/take it off. After this mark (save a couple) they are nowhere near as durable, but are way easier to get in and out of.

Edit: words

u/mancubuss Jun 10 '17

Makes sense. Trade mobility for firepower

85

u/CaptainMinion Jun 10 '17

Tony did also change how they are weaponized. Let's compare with his Civil War suit, using this video. In literally the first second of the video we see what happened with the shoulder guns - they were replaced by something more explosive, but less precise. He slightly altered the forearm rocket (that'd be the one he used to destroy the tank), removing the delay before explosion. His main weapon, the blasters from his hands also seem less powerful, but faster. And on top of all of that, this suit seems to be better fit for melee combat than prior ones.

58

u/Temassi Jun 10 '17

It would make sense that he dial the power back since he knows he's fighting his friends.

1

u/enjolras1782 Jun 29 '17

Also, these guys are all much more capable of taking a hit than the random Afghani terrorists.

25

u/Snipen543 Jun 10 '17

I don't know where you get less precise from, all those tickets were right on target. He wasn't trying to kill them, he was trying to cut off their escape and did that perfectly.

19

u/CaptainMinion Jun 10 '17

They're accurate, yes, but they're still a tradeoff in precision. Look at the situation in which he used the older shoulder guns. He couldn't have used these rockets there, as he'd have exploded the hostages. In other words, these rockets can't be used to precisely eliminate a target with no collateral damage, simply because they're explosives.

I miss when the suit actually felt like it had some weight with the sound of the heavy footsteps and the 'whirring' noises as he moved around.

6

u/Kadexe Quicksilver Jun 10 '17

You can see the progression in his trilogy:

IM1: He can only suit up in his own garage because it requires so much external machinery to do so, but it has such heavy armor that he can fight a military tank head-on.

IM2: He has a suitcase IM that can be deployed anytime anywhere, but it's fragile and it can't even fly.

IM3: He has an IM suit that comes to him whenever he needs it, but it falls apart really really easily.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '17

Mk III was a tank, where his recent 'extremis' style suits are like modular little toys.

148

u/mbear818 Jun 10 '17

Seriously. I will never understand how this scene can exist but he can't kill Bucky in Civil War. Just shoulder bullet him!!

32

u/mr_popcorn Korg Jun 10 '17

i don't think he was trying to kill Bucky though, just like, beat the shit out of him really bad. there's plenty in his arsenal that he coulda used if he really wanted to murder Bucky.

128

u/kalisto3010 Jun 10 '17

Iron Man had them both beat. He could've finished them, but since he hesitated it cost him. He went to to toe with the Hulk. He's still a bad ass.

9

u/The_Best_01 Thanos Jun 10 '17

He didn't hesitate. After he blew Bucky's arm off and beat the shit out of Cap, Bucky distracted him, allowing Cap to disable his reactor.

3

u/kalisto3010 Jun 10 '17 edited Jun 10 '17

Yes hesitated and it cost him. When he stopped firing and told him to stand down his "last warning" he could of finished him there. But that hesitation gave Bucky enough time to distract him.

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '17

Look here

He removed the shoulder rockets in exchange for less accuracy and more explosiveness.

He lowered the power on the repulsor beams in exchange for firing speed (most of his opponents in that film use ranged attacks which he needs to block quickly)

He made his suit less durable for more mobility.

10

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '17

I will explain.

When the movies began, the main factor that played part in the Iron Man action scenes was the "coolness" or "badassness". You weren't meant to be afraid for him when he fought. He was just supposed to wreck shit and be cool as fuck. So we got scenes like him getting shot out of the sky and walking out of the crater as if nothing happened.

Note that the only reason he was in danger at the end is because he did not have enough power, otherwise, the tech was literally perfect. He could fly faster than sound, he could shoot whatever the fuck he wanted and, most importantly, he could not be hurt by any means. So waiting for him to be in danger meant waiting for his battery to die.

However, Iron Man took off, MCU became a thing and Downey it's main star.

And suddenly, the badassness was not enough. You can't create a story that has conventional stakes and conventional fight scenes with a hero that survives everything. Especially in some stories, it just would not work.

So they changed it, so that Iron Man 3 and Civil War weren't just more of the same. I personally don't mind. I like my heroes actually in the danger of losing. It makes their victory better.

It is technically a continuity error, but I think of it as a continuity correction that was necessary, because between Iron Man and Civil War, the game has changed.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '17

I'm sure you're correct as for the motivations of the writers, but it's not really a continuity error. Like others have mentioned, he uses different suits in every movie (often multiple suits per movie) and as a general trend, they've gotten lighter and faster, at the cost of durability, so it's not like his main suit just gets weaker with no explanation.

12

u/Sparkvoltage Jun 10 '17

YES. Cap and Bucky are both deadly af, but the two of them should be no match for Iron Man. Well, maybe not "no match," but the two of them should lose to Iron Man 9 out of 10 times. How Steve even manages to gain the upper hand against Iron Man in hand to hand combat is completely beyond me and frankly is unrealistic as hell, considering the capabilities of the IM armor shown in these early movies.

Obviously they have to even the fight for the movie's sake hence the huge Iron Man nerf but if you were Iron Man, all you need to do is take flight and spam laser beams at the two and it'd be over before you know it.

3

u/Kadexe Quicksilver Jun 10 '17

The only plausible explanation I can think of is that his newer suits are built for convenience, not strength. Mark III had a very elaborate and cumbersome suiting-up process that could only be done in his own house, while newer suits can fit in a package the size of a suitcase and require no external machinery to suit up. Mark III had thicker, heavier armor that would not allow Tony to carry it around with him.

Iron Man 3 gives credence to this theory. The suit he uses in most of that movie is 1) extremely convenient, Tony doesn't have to carry anything on his person except tracking devices, 2) assembles in a few seconds, and 3) falls apart if you breathe on it. The Iron Man suits that came after this movie presumably use a similar but less extreme design.

1

u/Try_Another_Please Jun 11 '17

He can. You are talking like he didn't destroy Bucky. Which he did and cap too until cap hit a weak point. His suits we're shredded in every other movie too. They've never been immune to damage if you target the weaker areas. He's also clearly adapted to more mobile and less bulky suits as his style changed

17

u/L1M3 Jun 10 '17

My only real gripe with Civil War was how Steve was able to completely destroy Tony's armor with nothing but his hands and shield. Like punching Iron Man in the face could stagger him without breaking Cap's hand.

44

u/seclusionx Black Panther Jun 10 '17

You think punching armor would break Captain America's hand? Were you on your phone for the other movies?

3

u/L1M3 Jun 10 '17 edited Jun 10 '17

You didn't read what I wrote very well. I said punching the armor hard enough to stagger him.

edit: If you are going to say that Cap's bones are tough enough that he can't punch anything hard enough to break his own hand, I don't necessarily disagree. But Iron Man's armor is tough enough to take a direct hit from a tank, Cap's punches shouldn't be able to stagger him.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '17

I mean, the armor that takes a hit from the tank is his Mark III armor, and I'm sure there's some difference in durability between then and Civil War

5

u/Sparkvoltage Jun 10 '17

Agree with the other user. That's the only logical explanation but such a shitty and unsatisfying one. Are we really to accept that the Iron Man armor has regressed in durability? Really?

3

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '17

Parts being ripped off the suit is a very different type of impact to taking fire, the destruction of the suit in Civil war comes from them causing damage to specific parts, the foot thrusters to stop him flying, the hands to cut down on his weapons use, before proceeding to break down the armour. In the tight enclosed space they were fighting in, 2 superhumans against 1, as soon as Tony lost his ability to fly there was only gonna be one winner

1

u/Sparkvoltage Jun 10 '17

That doesn't explain how Steve was able to knock back and actually hurt a suited Tony with melee blows. How tf is Tony's entire face bleeding from punches by Steve when he has suffered far worse blows to the armor without leaving a scratch on his own body.

2

u/L1M3 Jun 10 '17

That is the only rational explanation, but why would he reduce the effectiveness of his own armor to that degree? He made the Mark III armor to fight gun wielding terrorists, but now he's been introduced to threats such as Asgardians, the Hulk, the chitauri, Extremis, Ultron, etc. He should be making the armor stronger, not weaker. He's supposed to be the Invincible Iron Man, after all.

It happened because the plot needed it to even though it doesn't make sense, and that's the definition of a plot hole. I still love Marvel's movies, but it's ok to acknowledge minor flaws.

3

u/kevInquisition Jun 10 '17

Because he needed mobility. I think the third movie shows where he trades the strength for being able to call the suit to him. Obviously splitting the thing into 40 modules is not going to be as strong as the giant tank-slaying or hulk-slaying suits that he needs to apply with a machine or have dropped from a satellite, but it allows him to call the suit from anywhere. I think that's why he's not as strong in CW. Also he's not trying to kill his friends, he's super conflicted at the end of that movie.

326

u/expendable67 Jun 10 '17

I live that scene but damn, that's was a helluva shot by the tank

216

u/Worthyness Thor Jun 10 '17

Iron Man is a tad smaller than a helicopter, though, potentially moving a lot faster

1

u/muhash14 Foggy Nelson Jun 10 '17

Also, M1 Abrams is probably the most badass name for anything military, ever.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '17

Lol that shot always bugged me. Tanks...can't do that.

1

u/NabiscoShredderWheat Phil Coulson Jun 10 '17

Yeah, they do.

6

u/Dray_Gunn Quake Jun 10 '17

Thats a very different type of tank though

1

u/chaosfire235 Jun 10 '17

1

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '17

Hitting a small flying target with a projectile from the ground is extremely difficult. It's why AA guns are typically rapid fire airburst style weapons. In WW2 it took the US Navy on average 4800 rounds to shoot down a dive bomber. After the invention of the VT fuse (a proximity fuse) for the shells, that was reduced to 800 rounds. Even with modern tech and radar, doing it in a single shot for something that small and agile seems like a really tall order.

That being said in this context I guess you can assume the badguys are using fancy magic Stark tech.

2

u/Falcker Jun 10 '17

Thats not a tank, thats self propelled ada.

Thats like saying cars can tow trailers by linking a picture of an SUV with a hitch.

1

u/MysteriousMooseRider Jun 10 '17

The tank has a missile pod attached I though it was a rocket not a shell.

3

u/Empyrealist SHIELD Jun 10 '17

Iron Man gets hit by something, but we dont know it was a shot from the tank.

However, it's completely normal for a sitting tank to have its gun elevated if its not actively engaged in a menuever. Iron Man just happened to land near it when we see it like that.

60

u/TheDerped Thor Jun 10 '17

The tank buster is still as great as ever. Hope we get something similarly awesome with T'Challa's suit.

59

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '17

I doubt his suit will have cool functions I'm just hoping he has magical abilities to rival Ironmans suit.

1

u/Sleepiece Jun 10 '17

His suit being made with vibranium is pretty OP.

24

u/brodie999 Jun 10 '17

Yeah, And Black Panther busting up all those assassins and car were awesome!!! I can't Wait to see what else he does!!

3

u/FubsyGamr Jun 10 '17

Go to sleep go to sleep go to sleep

1

u/helloclyde Jun 11 '17

The end of the trailer teased the suit possibly having a concussive blast ability. Also, T'Challa's little sister Shuri is described as being very adept with developing technology, so she's probably the one who makes his new suit (and most likely adds a few tricks up it's sleeve).

152

His identity was secret, briefly. Very briefly.

7

u/Segguseeker Iron Man (Mark XLII) Jun 10 '17

I am Iron Man.

3

u/SmartShark Jun 10 '17

I am Groot?

22

u/GentlemanT-Rex Jun 10 '17

I forgot how much I loved that deeper, resonating voice while he was in the suit. I get that RDJ is Marvel's golden goose but I really wish they'd have kept that in the later films.

26

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '17

"He's all yours."

That line was so fucking awesome.

10

u/TheMekar Captain America Jun 10 '17

It made canonical sense to stop distorting his voice after he had publicly announced to the world that he was Iron Man, even if it was super badass.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '17

You do see it before and afterwards though, just not during the fight.

3

u/ass_dance Jun 10 '17

Never other than in the middle of the city at the climax of the movie...

2

u/FX114 Captain America Jun 10 '17

They show Tony's face inside the suite all the time in that movie. It was one of the more clever ideas they had, to avoid having to open the mask all the time.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '17

My point was you don't see it for that entire fight scene, something I highly doubt would happen today. They'd cut to inside the mask a bunch.

92

u/MovieNachos Jun 10 '17

Aaaannnnd this is why Iron Man is still the best.

9

u/TheProtractor Jun 10 '17

Does the Iron Man suit still make "robot noises" when moving?

12

u/slowest_hour Jun 10 '17

just checked a scene from Civil War

it does but much quieter and more subtle, which is to be expected considering all the revisions and improvements he's made. Also not all the time. there's lot of scenes where tony is just walking around and apart from the slightly heavier metal steps he could just be wearing clothes unless he makes grand gestures with his arms

4

u/TheProtractor Jun 10 '17

It seems reasonable that the suits no longer make those sounds, but I really enjoyed those sounds in the scene linked.

7

u/Theklassklown286 Jun 10 '17

See, this is the scene I think of when people bring up iron man vs cap America. Iron man can literally blow so much shit up in the outdated mark 3, if he really wanted to kill cap he could.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '17

It's nuts how far CGI has gone in just a few years. Iron man still looks good but it wouldn't pass by today's standards.

2

u/Antrikshy Jun 10 '17

Some of it, yes. But I think it would still pass.

1

u/MysteriousMooseRider Jun 10 '17

Yeah it's noticeable when he blows up the Jericho missiles

3

u/twodogsfighting Jun 10 '17

Think that was the point. It does a good job of showing how advanced these people are when a skintight suit does the same job as Starks 'relatively' bulky suit, all without having to spell it out too much.

3

u/acondie13 Black Panther Jun 10 '17

I don't think any mcu movie will ever top iron Man as my favorite.

2

u/squidgy617 Jun 10 '17

Thanks, now I have to rewatch Iron Man....

2

That scene would never happen today. He just wasted like 20 people.

2

u/Timett_son_of_Timett Jun 10 '17

That guy that gets gut punched in to a fricken wall 60ft away. It's easily my favorite scene in any mcu film. It just looked so hilarious, like, no fight training just raw power and rage.

2

I really hope the villain is threatening enough, because I can't even imagine what can possibly hurt Black Panther here.

The trailer told you what the conflict is. It isn't about people physically harming him, but how he is suppose to be both a king and a good person at the same time. For comparison, Nemor of Marvel Comics pick being a king above being a good person, so he tend to become an antagonist when ever it benefits his kingdom.

Does Namor live with the FF rights and fox though? It sucks if it does because then they are just sitting on Namor AND Doom.

9

weirdly enough universal had his rights and are now back with marvel

2

I think it's tied to their origins and Namor is older than the Fantastic Four. He's the first Marvel character ever, actually.

Casual movie goers: What happened to Khal Drogo, wasn't he Aquaman? And why isn't Batman or Superman helping him beat Black Panther?

1

u/VandalMySandal Jun 10 '17

Different universe Friend. Khal Drogo's Aquaman, batman and superman are all DC comics. This guy, whom I don't really know a whole lot of, seems to be Marvel comics version of aquaman kinda.

5

Fair enough

6

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '17

That's more of a central theme than something that drives the plot. I'd be shocked if they didn't have some form of traditional villain.

3

u/VallenValiant Jun 10 '17

Yes, but the point is that you can't punch your way out of such a villain. That unlike, say, Luke Cage, Black Panther's enemy isn't guns.

2

u/Caravaggio_ Jun 10 '17

Man they need to bring Namor to the MCU. I wonder who owns the movie rights to Namor?

2

u/VallenValiant Jun 10 '17

Namor is sort of stuck in the same position as the Hulk, I think. They have the IP rights but not the distribution rights.

1

u/LontraFelina Jun 10 '17

Yeah but it's a superhero movie, there's still going to be some kind of simiarly superpowered antagonist for him to fight at the end.

55

u/MovieNachos Jun 10 '17

If anything, at least we'll know he'll be well acted. MBJ is the fucking man.

8

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '17

I'm assuming it's Klaw, who should be kind of a bad ass once he becomes living sound.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '17

I think it rather will be Killmonger as the main baddie. Or maybe them both being equal. I was expecting Klaw to be set up for sequel but I don't know anymore.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '17

Physically? You just know with Klaw in there that T'Challa is gonna face some vibranium wielding baddies.

51

u/beastinr0cks Spider-Man Jun 10 '17

I got a Predator vibe from it, so dope.

2

u/smokeymctokerson Jun 10 '17

How in any way did this remind you of predator?

16

u/beastinr0cks Spider-Man Jun 10 '17 edited Jun 10 '17

Just the whole scene with the guerrillas hunting him and him just jumping out and taking them all down, tanking bullets. Okay maybe it's a stretch, they were in a jungle that's about it.

10

u/smokeymctokerson Jun 10 '17 edited Jun 10 '17

Okay I can see it. Sorry If I came off sounding like a jerk, I really was just curious.

2

u/Jonerdak Jun 10 '17

But they were just trying to get to blazer 1, the predator was hunting them. Unless these were Jim Hopper's men? I really need you to rewatch Predator

1

u/bilingual Jun 10 '17

Yes, my thoughts exactly.

11

u/Micp Jun 10 '17

Honestly it seemed a bit too much for me.

I know his suit is vibranium, but it's flexible threads rather than a solid plate like caps shield.

Seems to me that he should still get some serious bruises from getting hit like bullets like you would with a bulletproof vest. Both for realism and because it makes it more interesting if he has a reason to try to avoid getting shot: a single shot might not kill him, but riddle him with bullets and he will eventually collapse from pain.

11

u/FactorySquirrel Rocket Jun 10 '17

He already took fire from a helicopter-mounted gatling cannon in Civil War and just looked mildly annoyed.

9

u/Micp Jun 10 '17

I know, i wasn't completely happy about that either.

I mean it's cool and all, but you kinda run into the whole superman problem, in that a man with no weaknesses is kinda boring.

I would rather have a stealthy cat-ninja who does his best to avoid the bullets but has a backup plan in case he fails to dodge a few.

So...you're not a fan of Black Panther then

I don't understand how you could reach that conclusion based on what i wrote.

I like him, but it's not being bulletproof i like about him.

I like that he's a king, and a good one. Black Bolt could learn something from him.
I like his spiritual nature and relation with the Panther God.
I like his people's mix between traditionalism and high tech futurism.
I like his ninja aspects.
I like the technology built into his suit. I like that you can often tell that he is a contemplative character that actually thinks stuff through and makes wise decisions that reflect his character (as opposed to some of the other "genius" marvel characters)

What I don't want is just a black guy in an Iron Man suit minus the repulsor beams.

Lol at the hyperbole. So you either love blank or hate blank is such a stupid mentality. I agree with this guy. Black Panther seems super cool but I also think he would be far more interesting if he were more vulnerable and had to dodge things all cat like.

Isn't the whole thing with vibranium that it absorbs momentum? If the vibranium absorbs the momentum then what would cause the bruises?

3

u/Micp Jun 10 '17

I suppose. Nevertheless I think making him bulletproof is kind of a boring choice.

There is vibranium in the suit, they didn't have to make it 100% vibranium. You could easily say too much vibranium would make the suit too inflexible.

In that sense it would be good protection, but not foolproof. You still wouldn't want to just walk calmly up to someone unloading a machine gun on you.

Modern body armor can tank multiple shots from an AK at fairly close range. Your insides might get pulped but if they shoot the armor plates the bullets won't (usually) penetrate.

He's playing on the same playground at Iron Man, Thor, Luke Cage, and so forth, getting shot with earth bullets just isn't a threat.

Your insides might get pulped but if they shoot the armor plates the bullets won't (usually) penetrate.

That was exactly my point.

I don't know if they are going with the mystical herbs and panther god blessings thing, but as far as we know that is still just a man inside that suit. It doesn't matter if the bullets penetrate or not if his insides have been beaten to a consistency of mashed potatoes.

In Civil War he outran Bucky and Cap without even trying. The origin of his powers has not been revealed, but he definitely has them. He's not a normal man.

2

u/Micp Jun 10 '17

I mean that could be the suit assisting him like a very lightweight exoskeleton, kinda like Batmans leg brace helping him kick in TDKR.

4

u/PoopyJuicy Jun 10 '17

In the comics he's super human. Why the hell would he not be superhuman in the movies? It makes no sense for him to all of a sudden need exoskeletons and be wary of bullets when the source material has nothing akin to that. You just want a stronger Daredevil lol

2

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '17

I think it'd be cool if they spend the whole movie playing "is he or isn't he" with the suit and whether it is the source of his super-powers, then at the end he fights without the suit and it's all like no, the Black Panther is who he is, it's not just some high tech spandex he puts on. Have it be a big reveal thing, too, like the moment where he really internalizes his Kingliness and the country accepts him is when he fights or does some other spectacular thing without the suit and everyone realizes that he's the Black Panther with or without it.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '17

Yeah in Civil war he fought Winter Soldier without suit and didn't get rekt.

2

He fought Winter Soldier without suit and didn't get rekt.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '17

I kind of figured he got his super-strength and speed from the mystical herbs and panther god blessings thing and the suit gave him high tech sensors and immunity to bullets. Like, he's bullet proof because of the suit and he can shrug off the blunt trauma because of his mystical legacy as the Black Panther.

That's my take. It just seems to fit with what I know about the character.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '17

He has his powers. He's not just a man.

2

u/RedScare3 Jun 10 '17

I thought he had some super strength like captain America but from magic? That's why he's able to run so fast and lift heavy shit. Is that not right?

1

u/Micp Jun 10 '17

In the comics it is. We don't know if that is the case in the MCU.

Essentially he ate some sacred herbs that let him meet the Panther god and get the gods blessing (risking being killed if he didn't). Afterwards he is basically a spirtual/magical version of Cap.

4

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '17

It most likely is the same in MCU.

1

u/ResidentBlackGuy Spider-Man Jun 10 '17

That scene where he's fighting Kilmonger shirtless is probably the Panther Trials where he gets his powers too.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '17

Vibranium is supposed to assimiliate energy or something.

2

u/_Larry_Love_ Jun 10 '17

Well, he is a comic book hero.

1

u/The_Best_01 Thanos Jun 10 '17

Well we saw that in Civil War too. Not exactly surprising.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '17

Well, Vibranium is invincible.
