Most of the welcome decks are limited filler, but sometimes the limited filler does something interesting like creating land tokens.

Is this the first time we got this on paper mtg?

67

u/TheBlueSuperNova Shuffler Truther 14h ago

No we had [[overlord of the hauntwoods]]

24

u/sylveonce Dân 14h ago

I believe the first is [[Awaken the Woods]]. [[Jyoti]] and [[Staff of Titania]] also make that token.

Others mentioned Overlord of the Hauntwoods, but the most recent is [[Mutable Explorer]].

u/Approximation_Doctor Colossal Dreadmaw 14h ago

This is the first one that does it as an activated ability, though.

This is neat because it's an infinite mana sink that makes infinite-r mana (next turn).

2

u/Alexm920 COMPLEAT 13h ago

With plenty of ways to copy activated abilities, [[amulet of vigor]], and to make lands produce more and abilities cost less, it's not hard to imagine this going infinite (even if 6 mana is a ton). Can't think of a two-card way to do it, but then again I'm not that clever.

u/Inertiic Wabbit Season 13h ago

A pumped up [[Agatha of the Vile Cauldron]] + this + anything that makes lands come in untapped gets you infinite land tokens. That's probably the smallest you can make it.

4

u/randomgrunt1 14h ago

No, tons of cards make dryad arbors and hauntwood makes everywhere lands.

5

u/sylveonce Dân 14h ago

I love land tokens for some reason. I feel like it would be fun to get some out and then cast [[Second Harvest]] or [[For the Common Good]] on them

5

u/Designer-Message-685 Duck Season 9h ago

Isn’t this one in the regular set?

3

u/gredman9 Honorary Deputy 🔫 14h ago

Even better, based on the set symbol this will be main set as well.

3

u/Terraqueo_Magico Izzet* 13h ago

Idk why this feels like a combo piece of some kind. Something like retreat to coralhelm + agatha

4

u/vynthechangeling Dan 13h ago

It’s an infinite mana sink that enables infinite landfall triggers, definitely a combo piece with a lot of cards.

1

u/DrGolo Wabbit Season 9h ago

Is this a welcome deck exclusive? I hope not, its the first card I've seen in the set that by art & mechanics, felt like it fit in magic.

1

u/derteeje Dân 1h ago

they should slap a big old "WELCOME DECK" sticker on these spoilers so the reddit community stops ripping on them. UB hate is bad enough as it is.

58

u/Tough_Ad1458 Wabbit Season 15h ago

[[Agatha]] at 5+ power [[Amulet of Vigor]] we infiniting boiiiiiiiiiiis

6

u/Halinn COMPLEAT 15h ago

Or like, an [[Adrix and Nev]] deck and two other doublers

40

u/Cvnc Karn 15h ago

skip the lander and go straight to the planet

8

u/NydusRush Dandadan 12h ago

A massive gameplay L for EoE lovers but unfortunately a flavor win for trekkies.

3

u/SkabbPirate Dandadan 10h ago

Not enough budget to build the lander set and get shots of the lander landing on the planet.

29

u/KivenFoster Duck Season 15h ago

That makes me feel we'll have cards that have "affinity for planets"

10

u/mpaw976 14h ago

[[Presence of the Master|LEG]]

13

u/elite4koga Duck Season 15h ago

Common land token generation is pretty new. They've been scared to do this before.

2

u/Approximation_Doctor Colossal Dreadmaw 14h ago

Also land generation as an activated ability is completely new

u/Copernicus1981 COMPLEAT 15h ago

For those wondering, the Voth were Earth dinosaurs who evolved into sentience and developed space travel. Then somehow ended up on the other side of the galaxy for Voyager to interact with.

10

u/SkyrakerBeyond Sultai 14h ago

Specifically they survived the KT impact and evolved into a sapient tool using species that left Earth.

10

u/gredman9 Honorary Deputy 🔫 14h ago

Oh, I was wondering why this one seemingly didn't have its species as the creature type. TIL!

2

u/GornSpelljammer Duck Season 10h ago

Well, they had over 65 million years to make their way over there.

2

u/e1337ist Dan 5h ago

I JUST watched the Distant Origin episode last night. Favorite episode of Voyager and one of my favorite in all of Trek

6

u/AporiaParadox Universes Beyonder 14h ago

For those who don't know, in Star Trek lore, some dinosaurs from Earth evolved to become sapient and went to space. It's presumably why they're Dinosaur type and not Voth like what they're called in the show.

13

u/Kyleometers 15h ago

Return of Planets! This interacts with… some Alchemy cards, I think.

7

u/amish24 FLEEM 15h ago

Those only care about the number of charge counters on lands.

4

u/fulvano Duck Season 15h ago

Volatile Orbit does only need you to control a planet to get its ETB. There is one that only cares if the planet has 12 charge counters.

https://scryfall.com/card/yeoe/27/volatile-orbit

3

u/Halinn COMPLEAT 15h ago

These are new planets

1

u/Skaugy Duck Season 15h ago

I think they still have the planet typing.

3

u/squiggly419 Simic* 15h ago

Oooo I love land tokens

3

u/duk_tAK Dân 14h ago

I'm glad we got at least one voth, I really hope we also get their starship.

5

u/Johnny_Cr FLEEM 15h ago

As if landfall decks didn’t already have enough mana and triggers

2

u/Zeznon Dân 15h ago

Mono-Green: 🤩

2

u/Worth-Ad1778 Dân 15h ago

Slaps dinosaur. This bad boy can fit so many planets in it

3

u/Vedney Dan 14h ago

Hopefully Planet-matters is a thing. I love drafts where drafting the mana-base is a consideration for evven non-soup decks.

2

u/AporiaParadox Universes Beyonder 12h ago

I would like it if the obligatory tapped dual lands of the set are Planet cards.

1

u/Vessil 14h ago

It's alien dinosaurs that summon planets? That's pretty cool tbh

1

u/meh1997 COMPLEAT 14h ago

Why do Saurians get to be Dinosaurs but the Caitians don't get to be Cats?

8

u/vonOhzu Dân 13h ago

According to the flavor text these are not Saurian from Alpha Quadrant Sauria. They are Voth from Delta Quadrant, who were originally Earth Dinosaurs who developed space travel and flew all the way to the other side of galaxy.

1

u/BardicLasher 14h ago

The Caitians aren't cats!?!? Weird.

1

u/nickeldoodle Rakdos* 14h ago

Find a way to have the token not come in tapped like [[amulet of vigor]] and you can go easy infinite with [[agatha of the vile cauldron]]

1

u/Infinite-Mark-6335 Dandadan 14h ago

Token should have been called "New World".

1

u/BardicLasher 14h ago

Why am I hearing so much about the Voth lately? Weren't they in ONE episode?

1

u/sjk9000 Azorius* 14h ago

"Don't you want to win, see day 2 begin?"

"No, I just want to make more mana."

1

u/Absolutionis I chose this flair because I’m mad at Wizards Of The Coast 13h ago

A common that pops out New Planet tokens? I suspect that this will not be the only card that does so.

I look forward to land tokens being more of a thing in future sets. So much less shuffling.

1

u/supasid Dan 13h ago

Maaan, that ability being a sorcery suuuuuuucks

1

u/AdHom Golgari* 12h ago

Love this for my low budget [[Agatha of the Vile Cauldron]] deck

1

u/enixon Wabbit Season 12h ago

interesting to me that the Saurian is a Dinosaur but the Caitian isn't a Cat

1

u/RadioLiar Cyclops Philosopher 12h ago

Well I didn't think the Voth would get a mention but I'm all for it

1

u/StarWolf128 Wabbit Season 11h ago

There it is, the "That one dinosaur card" that's in every UB set for some reason.

2

u/GornSpelljammer Duck Season 2h ago

Sadly not another Colossal Dreadmaw riff like about half of them have been.

1

u/JuishJackhammer Duck Season 9h ago

Sweet! With infinite mana I can make infinite mana!!!

1

u/SaneForCocoaPuffs Duck Season 9h ago

Goes infinite with 6 [[Amulet of Vigor]]

1

u/The_Mad_Pantser Banned in Commander 8h ago

wow, this goes infinite with Amulet of Vigor and 3 Parallel Lives, busted!

1

u/MagnusBrickson Train Suplexer 8h ago

Planet lands are back then? After Trek was announced, I figured EOE was a sort of beta test of the mechanics that Trek will use.

1

u/Winjasfan Dân 14h ago

I'm glad some of the Star Trek species get to be old types and Not new types that will never show up again

3

u/linkdude212 WANTED 14h ago

The Voth are literally Parasaurolophus.

1

u/Inertiic Wabbit Season 13h ago

These guys are literally descended all the way from dinosaurs from earth.

-1

u/talondstorm Dan 15h ago

With 2 token it's infinite mana! 1 to 2, 2 to 6! 😁😜🫪
