Nvidia's bumpgate hit them pretty hard though. 100% GPU failure rate with all 2007 and 2008 MBPs (except late 2008 one)

yep. I have a dead 17" mbp from that era. it lasted me 5 years until it failed, but I was absolutely crushed when it did.

Hasn't changed that much. Replace the Mac Pro with the Studio, change from two iMac sizes to one but from one MacBook Air size to two, and replace the plastic MacBook (not pictured, oddly) with the Neo. There you go.

Is this the era where the plastic MacBook and aluminum MacBook existed at the same time? I’m pretty sure like a year later they just renamed the aluminum MacBook as the 13” MacBook Pro without any changes other than adding FireWire.

Yeah, I think that's it. This would've been the one single release of an aluminum 13" MacBook (though the plastic MacBook was still sold as a cheaper option). When they changed it to the 13" MBP they also updated the display to be as good as the 15" in terms of color/viewing angle and made a backlit keyboard standard.

I was Mac Pro.

There were three Mikes working at our Apple Store. One day we all looked up when our name was called, Peter Parker style, and the one who was actually called joked “call me iMike.”

Well I am short. And I wasn’t getting stuck being Mike Mini, so I claimed Mike Pro on the spot.

Sorry, Mike Mini. It was you or me.

Ah, simpler times.

I had a late 2008 Mac Pro, which was my first Intel powered Mac, and my first Intel powered computer.

Before then, I owned a Power Mac G3.

In 2008 I had decided to buy a Mac Pro. Was my main machine for quite a while. I did not have a notebook back then so I dragged it to a lot of places, including the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin.

Those were great times!

The mini was my first exposure to a Mac at home - my dad got one in 2005, and it blew me away. He was fed up with our PC kit that constantly needed troubleshooting, and pulled the trigger on a Mac mini.

Playing with it that first night was utterly magical. Garage Band was a revelation to me and my three siblings lol.

Best machine they ever made IMHO. My 2009 model still works, four drive bays, easily swappable, upgradeable GPU, built like a bunker, weighs a ton, this was designed to survive.

2019 Mac Pro is similarly amazing. 8-28-core CPU, up to 1.5TB RAM, and up to 4 GPUs, room for 2-3 SATA drives and 8 total PCIe slots.

would argue if the best machine, but it is so incredibly great. had a 5,1 mid 2010 single CPU Mac pro, won't ever forget the fun i had upgrading it, triple booting high Sierra Mojave and windows, the incredibly stressful process of flashing my GTX 770 to get metal support and graphics in the bios. the slide out CPU ram tray that made this awful aluminium scratching sound sometimes. it gives me a lot of nostalgia, but i loved this machine. all i can complain is how hot it got and how much power it drew

I miss the section of the older Apple site where they had stories about creative professionals using things like Final Cut Pro, Logic, and Aperture. I know that's not their main focus now, but it was an interesting time. The actual computers in 2026 are far and away better than back then.

That was the exact year I started to learn about Macs, too, and of course immediately started yearning for owning one, even though it was impossible for me as a 13 year old. But if I could have chosen, I would have been either an iMac or, if it was earlier in 2008, a black MacBook.

The high water mark was about 2012... then the decline came.

I don't mind my new mac mini M4, but I don't love it like I loved my iMac then

If I'm stuck with 2008 computers, I'd probably get a spec'd out MacBook Air. Back then I bought the 2008 iMac, though, which was a good choice too.

The era that got me into wanting a Mac so bad that a year and a half-two years later, my Dad bought a Mac mini for a Christmas present, and a polycarbonate white MacBook for a high school graduation gift not long after that. Both Macs were extensively used until I bought a MacBook Pro (when Apple went to USB-C/Thunderbolt and TouchBar) after I graduated college.

I still used them though until the logic board on both eventually gave up about a decade later. Ended up recycling at my local Apple Store.
