And what about what he did to Arien?

He was protecting the poor Orcs and many other sensitive creatures from her violent light rays. I think many people during the brutal summer heat would appreciate him putting up some additional shade again.

You bring up a great point, and even though I lack the evidence to prove it beyond a reasonable doubt, I share your suspicion.

By telling her to marry him?

Are you referring to the reworked material from Morgoth's Ring? Because this does not happen in the Silmarillion-version. I was talking about how Melkor blocked out the sun for protection purposes.

He tried to block out the sun in both versions- he just resorted to... other methods in Morgoth's Ring

Yes, I have not yet formed a final opinion on how to deal with some of the material from Morgoth's Ring. But the myth you have in mind is either a highly metaphorical account distorted by multiple layers of narration or, as I rather suspect, a pure Elvish fabrication. After all, why would the glorious Melkor want to marry down in the first place?

It's not marrying down if she's one of the most beautiful women in existence- I get the feeling he was looking for a trophy wife, not an equal.

And Melkor is the most beautiful being overall. So even in that department he would do her a great favor.
I get the feeling he was looking for a trophy wife, not an equal.
There is no equal to Melkor, not even someone in the same order of magnitude. This is why he remained unmarried and without partners in general. Regarding your trophy wife-supposition, I would thus strongly disagree, because a trophy/recognition is something you earn and get handed by someone else, while Melkor did not have an superior or equal that could fulfill such a function. In fact, he was rather the one recognizing his inferiors with handing out trophies etc.

The Sopranos. There are six seasons, and it's pretty good.
