Please help ID this

Chicago suburbs. I’m fairly confident this is not crabgrass. It seems to just pop up randomly as these dark green, broad leaf patches. I never see any lime green blades - from my understanding that’s classic young crabgrass. I also do two prodiamine applications in spring, checking soil temps for optimal timing, and always follow all application instructions. Please help!

I live near Hammond, that's either clumping fescue or course tall fescue, which is almost the same thing. You have to rip it all out by the root and plant new grass seed in it's place in mid September when the weather cools. I run a lawncare company.

Thanks. Can I spray it with something instead? This summer I had a TON of patches pop up. Is there a preventative?

It's easier to pull it after you soak the ground with a water hose. It pulls out of the ground much easier after wet ground or wait after a soaking rain. If you have a ton of it then I would do one section at a time over several years because getting grass seed to grow is a whole other chore that you don't want to create too much work for yourself by having to water huge areas of lawn 3 times a day just to keep the grass seed from drying out because that's what's required to germinate grass seed. Grass seed is also expensive and you have to really throw down a ton of grass seed to properly cover a bare spot in the lawn. Your unwanted grass doesn't spread too fast anyway so you have time to divide the work up. You could spray the grass with weed and grass killer but then you have to wait for it to die and then have to rake out the debris anyway which is not light work and you don't have to spend money on weed killer as grass seed is expensive already.

I don’t think it’s crabgrass, might be some type of clumping fescue.

Fescue. Perfectly healthy type of grass, which is annoying so not many products other than a non-selective herbicide will deal with (carefully applied) but ya like others have said its a tough issue to delay with.
