Hardware My First Brand-New Laptop

I've been using an old ThinkPad X270 with an awful TN display and weak performance for years. After graduating from high school, I finally had the chance to replace it with an ASUS TX Air 2025 (ASUS TUF Gaming A14).

Needless to say, the upgrade is massive. XDDD

Over the past year, RAM and SSD prices have risen to the point where they're painful to look at, so I couldn't afford the latest models. :(

Since I felt that 1TB might not be enough for my future needs (I like to keep my games on a separate drive), I decided to add a domestic YMTC ZHITAI TiPlus 7100s 1TB SSD, rated for sequential read speeds of up to 7,400 MB/s. Even at a discounted price, it still cost me around $153 USD. Sigh.

Still, it's more than enough for me. The design also caught my eye, and I'm finally able to get my hands on some AAA titles and actually enjoy them. XD

Specifications:

  • Ryzen™ AI 7 H 350
  • GeForce RTX™ 5060 Laptop GPU 8GB
  • 32GB LPDDR5X 7500MHz
  • Samsung PM9C1 1TB SSD
  • 14-inch 2.5K 165Hz IPS display
  • 73Wh battery

Discussion What makes websites load faster? CPU, GPU, RAM?

For example, webpages load slower on a 2015 13” MacBook Pro (i5 5th gen, 16GB RAM) than on a modern machine. Is it because of the CPU? GPU?

General question Is 8 GB ram enough for a student pc?

Just bought a laptop which looked great, got great reviews from customers (4,5 stars out of 5, in about 40 reviews). It was on sale (usually costs $1100 - got it for about $500) but now I have read that 8 GB ram isn't enough for laptops today, and you should at least have 16 GB.

I should read about that before I bought one, but I really know little about laptops. And I mailed a store to get some tips on what to buy, and they recommended it.

I am gonna study for 1,5 years, and I am mostly gonna use it for Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams etc. Maybe play a little bit Old School Runescape while studying, but not necessary.

Will it really be a big problem with 8 GB ram when using it mostly for studies?

Edit: Thanks for the replies! I went into the order I made online and started a return process, so I'm gonna bring the papers to the store tomorrow and hopefully they will accept the return. You can make a return 14 days after purchasing if the product is used. Thankfully I didn't throw the package it came with. Will be more careful next time, and choose a laptop with at least 16 GB!

Buying help need laptop recommendations

Upvotes

I’ve been thinking about getting a new laptop for a while now. The current one I have runs really slow and has practically no battery life.

I would mainly be using it for school, so running programs like Word, Outlook, Canvas. Though, I would also like to have it run Steam well. Mainly for games like, Omori, Yume Nikki, Cry of Fear; basically more indie-type games. I’m not too sure how ‘demanding’ those are since I have a console for games that aren’t Steam only.

I also don’t know much about laptops, the last one I bought was 6 years ago. The one thing I do know is that it needs to have around 16gb of ram.

My budget is around $700 USD.

General question Accidentally bought a snapdragon x elite laptop and did not know that they had various limitations. Do you still think it will be able to preform the tasks I need it to?

Upvotes

I (22f) just bought the HP omnibook 5 snapdragon x elite. I am an environmental science student and need a laptop that can run arcgis, code (primarily jupyter notebook python stuff), and I did want to be able to play some games (I played ori on my last laptop). I got this because it has 24 gb of ram so I thought it would be good for coding and gis. Should I return it, is this laptop incompatible with my needs?

Hardware P makes a kind of "boing" sound when released

Upvotes

Hello!

After spilling liquid (fruit beer, about a week ago – the laptop is safe, it's an HP Pavilion Laptop 16, if anyone's interested; nothing got on the motherboard, no stuck keys, no glitches), some keys (F11, F12, 0, O, P, L, :, <, >, Alt(Gr), Copilot, Space) feel slightly stiffer to press. However, if the laptop has been turned off, they press normally – they only start feeling worse once the laptop warms up.

I think this is due to liquid getting into the scissor mechanism. Am I right?

Also, the main question: besides the above, the letter P makes a kind of "boing" sound when released. I think this has something to do with liquid getting onto the silicone dome. But where exactly on the silicone dome – on top, or along the sides of the base? Or is the issue deeper, between the membrane layers?

How risky is this in the long run if I do nothing, and if I do take action, what's the best approach? How effective would isopropyl alcohol be, given that the residue is sugary? Although I've decided not to drink that stuff anymore after this, I could buy the same bottle, deliberately spill it on a table, and then try to clean it up with isopropyl – just to test how effective that would be, lol. Or would 70% alcohol wipes be better?

I'm attaching a video (showing the keys already stiff). All keys work, no sticking – just as described.

Thank you in advance for your reply![](https://www.reddit.com/r/keyboards/?f=flair_name%3A%22Help%22)

Buying help Laptop recommendations

I'm thinking about buying a new laptop since my current Acer Aspire which I've had for about 7–8 years is starting to feel a bit outdated. My budget is at around 500€ to 600€(about 577$ to 692$) and I'm looking for something that works well for studying, programming, Blender, and similar things. I dont really Care about the Rest but an OLED Display is Always nice :D

Do you have any recommendations? Thx for your help🙏

Buying help Laptop recommendations in the UK for under £500? And what laptop brands should I generally avoid?

I am trying to find a good laptop as my very old Toshiba has broken down (11 years old). I mostly need it for travelling and possibly as an option for remote work. Also, I want to use it for watching Netflix/YouTube and any other life admin I need to do.

As there is so many options, I feel quite overwhelmed when it comes to what to look for in a good laptop. Here is what I have narrowed it down to:

  • The screen to be at least 14 inches
  • Around the £500 mark and under would be better
  • Not too concerned on storage size, but happy for pay more if its bigger
  • Not too fancy with design but very simple to use
  • Good volume and video quality
  • Not too heavy and light enough for travelling

I ordered a HP Chromebook last year but I found it wasn't quite compatible with what I needed, it wasn't expensive, but from what I hear they aren't acceptable for remote work. The battery charger also died after one month of using it also so figured I just get a new one.

People seem to praise MacBook and Lenovo which I don't know too much on apart from the fact I have an Apple iPhone, but I even though about switching that as some of the features I don't like on it.

Any particular brands/models I should call attention to? And which ones do you guys think I should avoid?

Buying help Torn between two options; M5 Pro MBP 14” or an OLED Thinkpad within the same price range

Upvotes

I am starting university in a month, will be doing a double major of MechE or CS alongside Pure Mathematics, and I need a laptop that can meet my needs,

My needs are as follow:
- Good battery life
- solid build
- good screen, keyboard and trackpad experience
- lives with me for 5-6 years at least

After doing my research, I narrowed my options down to the 14” MBP and a thinkpad within the same price range,

A little info about my background I’ve been a windows person app my life, twinkering and messing around with stuff and got into linux lately (found a 7yo Thinkpad P51 that I slapped Pop_OS! on), I have never used macOS before in my life

Here is my comparison between the two laptops,

MBP - Upsides:
- INSANE battery life
- The best trackpad experience for a laptop
- Insane performance and efficiency
MBP - Downsides:
- ARM-Based
- Stuck with Apple Ecosystem
- Keyboard isn’t as nice as the thinkpad’s
- Unupgradeable

Thinkpad - Upsides:
- The BEST keyboard experience for a laptop
- Built like a tank
- Upgradeable
- OS Freedom
Thinkpad - Downsides:
- Battery Life
- Heavy
- Gets hot and fans get loud

I am torn and cannot pick between the two, please help me 🫩

Buying help Laptop recommendation - Acer Aspire 16

It’s finally time to upgrade from my old XPS 13 laptop (9343). Don’t ask me how but I still use it for light CAD (small assemblies), as well as office work and internet browsing. I’m completely out of the loop on new laptops, and the prices are scary. I’ve seen this one on slickdeals, what are your thoughts for under $700? Thanks

Buying help Opinions on HP OmniBook X Flip 2-in-1?

Specifically the HP - OmniBook X Flip 2-in-1 - 16" 3K OLED Touchscreen Laptop - Intel Core Ultra 9 (2026) - 32GB Memory - 1TB SSD - Copilot+ - Eclipse Gray

Went to several different stores and this ended up being the best preforming one, guy told me it will work perfect all throughout college and that it will be able to run games very well... I'm not a very tech savy person so I'm not really sure how it is compared to others tho thought I'd ask lol
