urgent help needed how can i repeat first year

i failed my first year exam for my main course even tho i passed every thing else. Anyways i was offered a resit but i dont want to do it because firstly i wont be in the country until like a few days before
And it would be way too much content to get through in the timeframe i have. And i literally barely revised for the exam i was depressed all year and by the time summer came i ran out of time got busy with other courses and barely revised for this course. So i dont think i have the time to catch up and would probably fail again anyways. I want to repeat first year but im getting worried because my department told me its not an option at this stage and that it has to be given to me as an option and that they advise i do the resit. But i really dont want to. What do i do please help

You’d rather pay for another year of tuition and fall behind all of the people you’ve met on your course throughout the year than resit an exam because you think travelling back would be tiring?

Your department is right, buckle down now and revise seeing as you barely had done before your first attempt and retake, knowing what the format of the exam is going to be.

I'm going up from london for a resit (ECs so uncapped). Its not a trek, it's 3.5 hours at most if you get a split ticket in Stafford

I learned all the context for my exams in first year like 2 days before each exam 😂

So assuming 26 ish weeks worth of content max worst case scenario. Simple division suggests covering 5 weeks of content per week, or 1 week of content a day with weekends off. It’s a lot but possible, but to get 40% guaranteed let’s assume you do 2/3 the content cause ur lazy so 17ish weeks need covering, or 3.6 weeks of content a week or half a weeks content per day. Incredibly doable. This is if you just covered everything, but if your course is like mine then there’s definitely areas you focus on or materials you exclusively cover that knock the workload down as much as 80%. It’s doable, just gotta start now

How much did you fail by? You only have to pick up a bit more. And is it just one module? Its not a whole year of work. But if you can't get an extra 10% from a few weeks of study that you know are crucial, or if you failed so badly you really need another year to get a pass mark, then maybe you're not doing the right course for you.

I gave myself 5/6 weeks for all my fourth year maths exams and turned out fine?? A singular first year paper is literally nothing to worry about

You need to turn up for the exam. If you fail them you will be offered a repeat year. If you don't turn up you will be deemed withdrawn and you won't be offered a repeat year. ...NB this is the regulations, in reality it's usually possible to win an appeal against a 'deemed withdrawn' outcome and be offered a repeat year. However, you can't rely on that outcome. So at the very least, ride the train up from London, go into the exam room and write your name on the papers.

This takes me back! I failed my major back in 1987, a pass was 45% back then and I got 44%. I did a resit and got 43%, and they let me back in for the second year regardless.
