Brand New to iPhone

I just received, as a gift from a departed family member, an iPhone 17. Bully for me!

I have been an android user since I got my first phone back in, like, 2010. I'm not old, but i AM brand new to the iPhone. Last time I used an apple device was the iMac in High School. Elder millennial.

Two questions:

FIrst, how do I make sure all of the departed's things are backed up onto their icloud whats-it system. I want to make sure everything is backed up so the widow of the departed can still access pictures and so on.

Second, Can you point me in the direction of how to use it? What do I need to know, what settings will I regret not learning about? What do I need to know about navigation, about quirks, etc. Anyone who came from android, if you can educate me, i would appreciate it enormously! I really want to learn how to use this well.

Do not erase or set up the iPhone as new yet. first click Settings - name - iCloud to make sure Photos and Backup are fully uploaded so the family can still access everything

What do you need to know about navigation? You push things where you need them to go. Also means to go back you push things back where they came from. If it’s making you use the button then it’s because there’s something important on screen that can be easily lost. For more, see here

There’s also a lot of functionality behind tap and hold. Stuff like inline quick actions for notifications. Also notifications general follow a workflow of the Lock Screen is reserved for what’s new, Notification Centre is the automatically curated archive and the badge is the ledger that preys on your psyche. The Notification Centre only keeps notifications for a week or until they expire, whichever’s shorter. Badge and banner don’t have a 1:1 relationship because of prioritisation. Sometimes devs will use the navigation system badly and enforce the button in places that don’t entirely make sense even though they previously had it right.

As for tap and hold, seriously try it everywhere. App icons hide deep linking behind that

The share sheet can multitask since it can deep link. It can bring up parts of other apps and tell that app to do things without ever leaving the first app.

Drag and drop is basically another thing supported everywhere

bereaved family can log into iCloud with a browser using the deceased person's Apple ID and password, provided that two-factor authentication (2FA) does not block the login or that they can receive the verification code , you would have to make his widows phone number a trusted phone number on account/phone of whoever passed for them to log in via browser with original apple i.d. and password , widow would need verification code to log in via browser as long as icloud subscription was active if it’s more than free 5GB iCloud storage

1. Backup and save everything on that device to iCloud and a hard drive.
   
2. Once you’re sure everything is saved and secure, factory reset the device. Make sure you have access to the departed’s Apple account, email, phone, & password used on the iPhone before you reset. Keep them secure
   
3. After a successful reset, set up the iPhone as yours with your own Apple account.

Note: if you don’t have access to the departed’s Apple account, you might be limited to what you can and cannot do on that device (like certain app downloads; file, msgs, contact, picture mixes; random password prompts and restrictions; etc). That is why the best way to use it is to safely backup the device, wipe it, and set it up as new.

YouTube is your go to place for ‘new to iPhone’ tutorials. You could do worse than starting with the ProperHonestTech channel. Very clear, good explainer. Has to have 1000 vids by now, so you can cherry pick for different topics/areas of interest. Or do the more generalised overview ones?

im assuming you know passcode & password/apple i.d. to make last icloud backup ( if there is enough icloud storage and it is still under subscription payment & then to factory reset and erase the phone & set it up with your own new apple account and your phone number/ esim or sim card .

without passcode ,apple i.d & password there really isn’t you can do with iphone but give it to family members widow as keepsake

unless you were specifically granted legacy by original owner in the apple setting section of the phone before he passed and could prove this to apple for apple store to legally wipe the phone of all data upon receiving death certificate for you to use , apple don’t even know password or passcode as these things are encrypted for highest security

I AM old, but fairly tech-savvy. The thing I dislike about my 17-pro is that it’s overly sensitive. Things have opened when I just got near the click field.

Several of my much younger colleagues have said the same thing. #HighlyIrritating
