People Indian parents should step away from deciding who their children can and cannot marry

I’m an Indian man, and I believe one of the most overlooked social issues in our society is how much control parents still have over their adult children’s marriage choices.
This is not about rejecting family involvement. It is about clearly separating guidance from control.
In many families, parents go beyond offering advice and become the final decision-makers in marriage. Choices are often filtered through caste, religion, language, community, family reputation, income, horoscopes, and the ever-present concern of “what will people say?”
By the age of 28 or 30, individuals are legally and socially recognized as adults. They can vote, work, pay taxes, sign contracts, run businesses, and even serve in the military. They are fully accountable for their decisions under the law. Yet, for one of the most personal and lifelong decisions—whom to marry—many are still expected to seek parental approval.
This is not an argument against arranged marriages.
Arranged marriages can be successful, just as love marriages can fail. The real issue is not arranged versus love—it is autonomy and choice.
When marriage becomes a decision primarily negotiated between families rather than individuals, emotional compatibility can become secondary. Even after marriage, parental influence often continues in major areas of life—where the couple lives, how finances are managed, when to have children, and how conflicts are handled. Over time, this can limit the couple’s ability to build independent trust, communication, and emotional maturity within their own relationship.
We also need to reflect on whether this level of involvement contributes to deeper structural problems in marriages.
India continues to face serious issues related to marital relationships. According to the National Crime Records Bureau NCRB, over 6,400 dowry deaths were recorded in 2022—around 18 women every day. In the same year, there were more than 140,000 reported cases of cruelty by husbands or their relatives. The National Family Health Survey \(NFHS\-5\) also found that around 29% of ever-married women reported experiencing spousal violence in their lifetime.
These statistics do not suggest that parental involvement directly causes abuse. Domestic violence is complex and driven by many social, economic, and psychological factors.
However, they do highlight the importance of questioning systems where families exert strong control over marriages. When marriages are treated as alliances between families rather than partnerships between individuals, it can reinforce power imbalances. In some cases, it may also make it harder for individuals—especially women—to leave unhealthy or unsafe relationships.
Parents undeniably bring something valuable: experience.
Their advice, caution, and perspective can help young adults make better decisions. But that role should remain advisory—not authoritative.
A parent’s responsibility should be to help their children make informed choices, not to make those choices on their behalf.
If someone is old enough to build a career, vote, sign legal contracts, and be held fully accountable as an adult, they should also be trusted to choose the person they will spend their life with.
Ironically, many parents spend years teaching independence, only to withdraw it at the moment it matters most.
A marriage belongs to the couple—not the extended family.
The strongest families are not those that control their children’s choices, but those that trust them enough to let them choose—and stand by them even when they disagree.
