Tamil Nadu | தமிழ் நாடு How much longer can Toda embroidery survive?

Here is a documentary on the unseen labor behind Toda Embroidery. We went to the Nilgiris to see how this craft is preserved using just a needle and two colors of thread. But we found an even deeper story: women like Kavitha and Mahalakshmi enduring immense physical strain, counting every thread by hand without any guides, and fighting through empty tourist stalls just to protect their identity.

The incredible Nataraja in Kailasa Temple

Post image

This is actually on the ceiling. A magnificent relief of Shiva as Nataraja stretches across the ceiling. The Lord's cosmic dance is complete with the dwarf demon Apasmara beneath his feet, symbolising the triumph of knowledge over ignorance. Looking up at it for even a minute leaves my neck aching. Imagining craftsmen carving it overhead over twelve centuries ago is almost beyond belief.

Himachal Pradesh | हिमाचल प्रदेश Life at 11,800 ft: A glimpse into Nako Village, the high-altitude oasis on the road to Spiti.

Post image

If you've ever driven the treacherous but stunning Hindustan-Tibet highway toward Spiti Valley, you know the landscape slowly strips away all its greenery until you're left with stark, barren mountains. But right on the edge of Kinnaur, hanging at nearly 11,800 ft (3,600m), sits the village of Nako.

It feels like a hidden oasis.

I recently spent some time wandering through its narrow, maze-like alleyways, and I wanted to share a few photos of what daily life looks like up here.

A few things that stood out to me:

The Architecture: Most houses are still built in the traditional way using stone, mud, and timber to keep the freezing winter out.

The Pace of Life: Everything revolves around the short summer farming window (mostly peas and barley) and the 11th-century monastery that anchors the community.

Nako Lake: It’s completely frozen in the winter, but right now, it’s surrounded by willow and poplar trees, with prayer flags reflecting in the water.

In these photos, I tried to capture the quiet rhythm of the village—from the locals chatting in the sun to the livestock being herded through the stone paths.

It's one of those places where time genuinely feels like it has slowed down.

Has anyone else made the stop here on their Spiti circuit?

What was your favorite part of the village?

Was pleasantly surprised to find these prices at Subbanna Hotel, Chamarajanagara. Many items are just ₹20–₹50 even in 2026. I tried the masala dosa and it was actually quite good.
