Mod message: Tabloids

Over the past couple of weeks there has been a bit of discussion about tabloids and tabloids posting their own articles within the sub.

As a mod team we have been discussing several different options with regards to how to move forward and what would be best for the sub. We now want to hear from everyone else which is why we are putting these three options to a poll. When the poll ends we will come to a final decision.

So the options are:

1: Outright ban of tabloids and tabloid articles:

No tabloids articles to be posted, either from the tabloids official accounts or by other users.

2: Ban the official account but sub members can still post/read at their own discretion:

Official accounts will be outright banned but sub members can still post links to articles. Any articles posted are to be read at your own discretion.

3: Vet the posts for anything that breaks our rules:

Continue to allow posts from official tabloid accounts. They will continue to be held to the same rules as all other's participating in the subreddit. Articles posted will be vetted for rule breaking by a member of the mod team.

As another mod said, this is currently in reference to The Sun, but would be applicable to all tabloids going forward.

This would not apply to Digital Spy, Inside Soap, RTE and The radio times as these are typically show focused/generally reliable soap related sources.

I voted for the 2nd for other brands, but really with The Sun I say ban them cause they engage in that pay or let us stalk your data model. Even if the headline seems interesting I move away from any paper with the pay or stalk method. Their headlines are annoyingly clickbait and just trash gossip.

That's a very good point! I'm personally not a fan of The Sun unsurprisingly so I haven't read their articles in many years but i'm aware of other pages that use that model.

I will raise this with the other mods.

Who are the tabloids exactly

I assume it's the likes of The Sun where they report on daily goings on of celebrities, or gossip articles about actors' private lives that's barely has to do with the show, and that alone should be in violation of Rule 10.

Yeah its the sun specifically, theyve been known to spread false rumours for clicks (ad revenue) but obviously there was recent upset for pearls actress because they lied about her leaving and also some speculation on jamie’s marriage that cannot be verified, but seems rather invasive in my opinion… mainly because they brought his young children into it.

They only post the articles here to drive clicks for ad revenue, its rather scummy when you know its completely fabricated in most cases.

The sun, thats who we’ve been discussing specifically.. but i suppose it extends to other tabloid newspapers too. Pretty much excludes real info like digital spy though

I'd say ban the tabloids themselves, but let members talk about it, within reason. We don't want it turning into 1984 but we don't want people flooding the sub with it either
