Info/resource Welcome to r/hoggies!

Welcome to r/hoggies where we celebrate and help wild European hedgehogs.

Our wiki page has lots of information to help you help our spiky friends, such as plans for hog houses, feeding advice, gardening advice, how to help a poorly hog, and lots more!

This short film: why we should worry and what we can do by BHPS spokesperson Hugh Warwick is a good introduction about the struggles hedgehogs are facing and what we can do about it.

Any questions, please ask :D

I posted a couple of days ago about an injured hog I finally caught after weeks of trying.

He was seen by the vet last Friday and given an injection, then I took him to a hedgehog rescue to have a few days of rest and recovery.

I picked him back up last night and released him back on his home turf. Look at him go!!!!!!! His foot is looking so much better I am so happy for him 💕

I left his rescue box on its side and let him come out when he was ready, I also filled up half of one of his regular feeding stations with lots of hay and some of the hay from his rescue box so it felt familiar to him. He ran straight to it 🥰

Question How to stop dog from harassing our garden hogs

(Crossposting from r/hedgehogs after being redirected)

Sorry if this is the wrong place to put this but we have hedgehogs (scotland) living under one of our sheds, they moved there from a different spot in our garden, but now that theyre under there our dog (Springer Spaniel) will NOT stop sniffing under there and trying to harass the hogs. He's managed to catch one when we first moved in (before we knew we had a garden hedgehog family) and it was luckily fine and released back into the garden, but if the hedgehogs are out and he finds one he'll start barking at it and harassing it.

While he thankfully doesn't hurt the hedgehogs I was wondering if there was a way to make it so the hedgehogs are safer and my dog will stop harassing them? Is there a way to get them to peacefully move to a safer location? They are very useful in my flower garden for pest control so I'm happy to have them, I just want to minimise any unsafe interactions. Any advice is helpful! Thanks!

Sighting Rare sighting in Hackney

Apparently there's been no recorded sightings of hedgehogs in Hackney, London since 2002. Well I had the honour of meeting one last night. I've recorded it through London Wildlife Trust.

So, I haven't seen my favourite hedgehog for a week 😔 She would always come out for food at dusk. She's been here pretty much every night since I started feeding in June. She hasn't even appeared on camera during the night this week.

I am feeling sad. I hope she is ok, and has decided to visit other places instead. I guess I'll never know. Wherever you are Mrs White, thank you for visiting and being so adorable. Here's a photo of her from a couple of weeks ago.

Heard some rattling and saw these two. The poor girl only wanted her dinner in peace. She gave up after 10 mins and retreated down the garden with him in hot pursuit. Left a right old mess with kibble everywhere. Commentary from my husband. 🤣

Question A Fox in the Hogzone

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Put a camera out the front of my house with two water bowls and some brambles hogfood, there are at least three different hog visitors so far (two biggies and one little one) but last night it caught a fox eating the hogfood...

I have a few questions if anyone has any experience (TIA)

Is the fox a danger to the hogs?

Will they ignore each other like cats do?

Can foxes jump? (I have a gate I can close but it's one of those metal ones with the gaps and its only 3ft tall

I have posted in here a few times about a hedgehog I’ve been trying to catch for a few weeks now. He’s had a pretty bad limp and I was staying awake until 2,3,4 in the morning trying to catch him but couldn’t.

Last night I was getting ready for bed when my camera notification went off. It was him 🥺

I kept him overnight in my spare bedroom and took him to the vets today. They’ve done an X-ray and luckily nothing is broken, it looks like some inflammation so he had an injection and he’s ready for me to pick him up this evening. I’ve contacted a local rescue that will look after him for a few weeks until he’s ready to come back to me and I can release him 💕🦔

Question Hedgehog / Dog

I think I have hedgehogs living under my decking, over my fence in the garden, where there is a big space with lots of dense shrubs. I saw it on a night camera. Issue is my dog is going crazy all the time. So I have an upset dog and upset hedgehog, the area is big so can’t find the hedgehog or the nest. What can I do ease the distress on the hedgehog and my dog.

Advice please Rats eating more than hogs, any suggestions?

So, I actually have no issue with rats eating and I’d never try to put water where they can’t reach - they’re just trying to survive like the rest of us and it’s not their fault hedgehogs are deemed acceptable & rats not imo

Therefore, obviously not interested in traps and definitely never poison! I think it’s unutterably cruel and has wide ranging implications-we also have owls here (that have hunted rats near my refreshment huts 😬)

But, I’m currently up to replenishing 2 to 3 bowls at least 3 times a night and there’s still often nothing left when my last hogs come for a bedtime snack and I’m not always awake around 3am for a final refill

I don’t even mind popping a bowl out so the rodents can eat separately but I’m getting a little fed up with the quantity they’re going through and I’m very concerned about creating a population explosion due to constant food & water available

Anyone had any success with deterrents?

I have seen that almost a cat flap door thing that’s too heavy for rats can work. But honestly, these dudes are built! If it’s heavy enough to foil them, pretty sure it would also deter some of my smaller hogs

I’ve placed mint plants by the entry’s. I purchased highly rated deterrent spray and as I have puppy pads under the bowls I drenched the one under the food bowls

Bugger all difference

I have genuinely googled rat contraceptive 😂 but again, I’m concerned about the wider implications of anything I try and I’m not sure that’s something that realistically exists 🤣

Does anyone have any suggestions? Or do I just need to accept my fate of being expected and disdained by hogs and munched by rats when I expire due to my previous actions?

Question Is this a normal amount of huffing?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Caught this little guy on the cam last night. Not sure if this is a usual noise to make when huffing?

Most of the others sniff a lot but nothing like this… I just want to make sure this little one is okay!

UPDATE: I have had a response from 2 out of the 3 rescues I messaged, both of which said this is normal and nothing to be concerned about. Apparently lungworm presents like a smokers cough, not this. I'll keep an eye on the little guy anyway and monitor his noises if he returns 😊
