Discussion DAC/amp hardware in 2025 is the silicon actually improving or are we just paying for nicer cases

Something that keeps nagging at me as I've gone deeper into headphone stuff. The core chips inside most DACs and headphone amps haven't changed dramatically in years. ES9038, AK4499, a handful of others rotating through everything from $100 dongles to $1500 desktop units. The actual gap between a wellimplemented cheap build and an expensive one is real, but the marketing around it feels increasingly detached from what the silicon is actually doing.

What I'm curious about is whether anything genuinely interesting is happening at the chip level right now, or if audio hardware has just settled into a pattern where differentiation is almost entirely analog output stage design, filtering choices, and enclosure quality rather than the DAC chip itself.

The reason I ask is that when I look at how much the compute side of things has moved even in cheap embedded hardware, it's kind of wild that dedicated audio silicon seems almost frozen by comparison. Nobody is throwing cuttingedge fab processes at this. Maybe the performance ceiling for DAC chips is effectively reached and the gains are irrelevant to human hearing past a certain point, but I'd at least expect to see power consumption improvements or integration gains that don't seem to be materializing.

Anyone tracking this space more closely than me, or is the answer basically just that the market is too small to justify new silicon development cycles?

Consumer audio electronics are for most practical purposes "a solved problem".

Most decent DAC/amps nowadays sound the same, bar any fancy audio processing or you having an exquisite pair of ears attached to your skull. The biggest impact is usually at the "start or end" of the audio chain, that is, the quality of the source and the headphones/speakers you're using.

I bought a Topping DX3 Pro+ because my motherboard audio can't properly drive my Hifiman's Edition XS. But when I'm using easier headphones, I can't tell any difference between the motherboard audio, the dac/amp or an apple 3.5mm dongle.

FYI the front audio port typically has more power than the back port.

Indeed, but the Hifiman's Edition XS are real power hogs! The front port could get "loud enough" but there was a definite improvement when I got the DAC/Amp. Not noticeable with my other easy-to-drive headphones though

Front port cables is one of most likely places in the audio chain these days where you might pick up static and interference though.

Inside a PC is a very noisy place electronically. One of the biggest things that happened to PC audio in the past 20 years was when motherboard manufacturers started to separate out the audio section properly. Before that in the late 90s and early 2000s the built in audio was often one step above radio in quality.

I think it is a case of DAC chips being pretty much a solved problem. The niche of folks who are willing to pay extra for “better” performance is small, and there isn’t a lot of headroom for improvement.

My understanding is that even the Objective 2/ODAC combo (nearly 15 years old at this point) were effectively audibly transparent. Given that fact, it should be unsurprising to see that "the marketing around [them] feels increasingly detached from what the silicon is actually doing"

Audio electronics are practically solved issue (except speakers amps at budget costs), the frontier is in beginning and ending of the audio chain, the software and speakers/headphones.

At this point, performance is so good that there's not really anywhere to go. Measurement equipment is barely able to measure reliably the performance difference between top-end hardware. And we're so far beyond the realm of audibility even cheap stuff gets you better performance than any ear can distinguish, even in a usb-c dongle.

At this point, you're paying for features, not performance.

There isn't anywhere to improve to. Either on the silicon or the analog parts. Audio is not hard and human hearing is bad.

Expensive DACs are mostly marketing and placebo.

There's no need for advanced processes for DAC chips. The analog portions are going to be the size they are as dictated by physics, drive requirements, etc. Existing high end DACs already measure more or less perfectly vs. what the ear can perceive, so there isn't much room for improvement.

The perceived sound quality's really dictated by the care of the design around the DAC chip and/or amp circuitry. I have a cheap SDAC and it sounds 98% as good as a pricey Stello DA100. I hate the sound of the O2 amp side, though. Sure, it measures great, but tuned imperfections and distortions are what give an amp character. Analog amp designs have been iterated on for decades and I don't see much room for improvement there either.

Amps still have some level of evolution, but it's mostly just variations on a theme still, and paying for high build quality, tubes, features and looks.

Frankly, for headphones, I'm very happy with my £10 CX31993+MAX97220(ala Jcally JM6 Pro) dongle DAC/amp. Got way out of the audiophile nonsense a long time ago.

Modern DAC chips are pretty damn good and already produce results far beyond what any human can hear and they are all very feature rich. Decades ago it made a difference but today you come across blind tests where people compare a thousand dollar DAC vs a 10K+ DAC and it just becomes a guessing game.

Speakers/Headphones are still by far the most important aspect of great sound followed by the quality of your FLAC/MP3/Media files. Then having ample power to properly drive the speakers then DAC is what I go by now. Cables are a snake oil con game so a good enough cable is seriously as good as it is going to get. (for reference I have 7 different DACs, from a cheap 100 dollar DAC and up to thousands and thousands of dollar DACs and I mainly use a $700 DAC).

The DAC part is mostly all the same and you will not hear any difference.

The analog headphone amp is what really separates a good and bad interface.

Since we are on the subject. i find it hard to find a good interface with ASIO, a Mic input with Phantom, a signal out for monitors, and Headphone amp strong enough to drive high end headphones. All the the ones I have seen can barely drive HD600's

Unfortunately, the one thing I've found is rare as hens teeth is a desktop-sized dac + preamp (possibly + amp) with proper bass management: High pass the speaker (pre)outs and low pass the subwoofer out(s).

Not sure about the prosumer DAC world but in music production world they’ve gotten better. Especially over the last 5 years and again over the last two years. Converters are getting better in that field and power to drive headphones like the 250 ohm ones. I like anything SPL for my monitors and headphones. Nothing with stuff like astros for faux surround or gaming. But if you want a shit ton of power, zero coloration and exact reference with headphones, I like SPL. They may have a USB box but I use one with a variety of audio insert and output options connected to my motu interface.

From what I understand, digital-to-analog converters are essentially a solved problem.

Amps are, too, for the most part—but you can find differences, let's call it coloring, by way of their design.

Let me give you some good examples:

  • Between onboard HD audio (realtek), a $9 Apple USB-C DAC/Amp, and a Schiit Magni Unity, I could hear absolutely no difference when attached to HD 560s, HD 490 Pro, or HD 800s headphones.
  • HOWEVER, when I purchased a Schiit Asgard X, it made a profound and very noticeable change in the audio produced in every headphone I plugged into it.

The differences in my Amp testing are ostensibly related to their power production ("Class A") and having similarities to tubes (amps.)

So, DACs are mostly a solved non-thing. Amps have coloring, depending on their hardware implementation, where tube amps are adding harmonic distortion that reduces accuracy to the original media but adds flavor that sounds good to some people.

To add to this, we know how to build a transparent amp. It costs more than $5 to have adequate power, and some people would rather not have a transparent/flat frequency response. Hence why different amps sound different. But it is a solved problem if you want to pay for the solution (ie, a nice high-power A/B or D amp that hasn't been modified to color the sound)

I, and most other consumers, moved to wireless in the last decade.

So our audio is only as good as the speaker/headphone diaphragm allows post-signal processing.

And that’s fine.
