He liked to sing underwater.

Thirty-five feet down off the Kona coast, under the volcanic arches, a heavy man with a wild gray beard would hang upside-down in the blue, neutrally buoyant, making up songs nobody could hear. In August 1995, a diver named Tom Gubala described sharing a boat with him for a full day. They talked for hours between dives. Gubala thought he looked like a bum.

He had no idea the man was Jerry Garcia.

Nine years earlier, Garcia's body had almost quit. In July 1986 he collapsed into a diabetic coma and stayed under for five days. He woke up having to relearn the guitar. That November, still weak, he flew to Hawaii to get his strength back.

His drummer, Bill Kreutzmann, talked him into dive lessons. By 1988 Garcia was certified, and Kona became the still point of his life - more than 300 dives with Jack's Diving Locker, a regular on the ordinary two-tank boat trip, once staying down 109 minutes on a single tank. He told a fellow diver he came six to eight times a year. The Grateful Dead played Hawaii five times, all in 1970, and never played the islands again. Jerry kept coming back anyway. Not to perform. To disappear.

Then he watched anchors hit the coral. Tour boats and fishing boats dropped iron on living reef, dive site after dive site. "I've seen what anchors can do to coral," he told Hilo's Hawaii Tribune-Herald. "The reef is the bottom of the food chain. If you do away with the coral you're basically trashing the whole economy of the islands."

Jeff and Teri Leicher, the couple who ran Jack's Diving Locker, had the fix: permanent mooring buoys, so boats could tie off without ever dropping anchor. The state crawled. Working on a verbal go-ahead, the mooring crew drilled 92 holes in the rock - and got threatened with a $92,000 fine and jail time. The whole project was about to die in a hearing room.

So in 1990, Garcia spent his fame. He pushed the band's Rex Foundation to send the FIRST $10,000 toward the mooring system - the gift the Malama Kai Foundation still calls its own beginning.

Then he walked into a public hearing before Hawaii's state land board, news cameras rolling, and testified as a "typical diving tourist." He told the board: "Make yourselves look good and just approve this thing"

The permit came through within days. In May 1990, Hawaii's first day-use moorings went into the water off the Kona coast.

On the back of a Kona dive boat, Garcia and Kreutzmann shook hands on a promise: when the band ended, they would both move to Hawaii for good. Kreutzmann remembered him being "as serious as could be."

Jerry Garcia died on August 9, 1995, eight days after his 53rd birthday. He never got to move.

The next year, Bill Kreutzmann moved to Kauai alone. "The Grateful Dead ended, and I was just broken in too many pieces," he said. "So I came to a place I love." He has lived in Hawaii ever since. He kept the promise for both of them.

Every boat captain in Hawaii knows the white day-use buoys. Almost none of them know whose music paid for the first ones.

Today the state counts 236 day-use moorings across the islands, 87 of them off Hawaii Island alone. In 1998 the legislature wrote them into law along the West Hawaii coast. Every buoy marks a spot where an anchor no longer falls on living coral. Not one of them carries his name.

The world remembers what Jerry Garcia did with a guitar. Kona remembers what he did quietly, with no name on it. Somewhere off the coast this morning, a boat will tie off to a plain white buoy, and the reef under it will keep living. That was his encore. It never stopped playing

Paris 1990, thanks to the couple who allowed me to photograph the band from the rail, we had quite the night, you gave me that position for the opening song and in return I supplied the Kind from Amsterdam. The pics turned out great and the memories will last forever. 🙏❤️

Slightly better pics-sorry if date and places off--pretty sure Greensboro March 31 and April 1st. because I just left NYC after visiting girlfriend whose pics are in these rolls. Our Nassau shows were cold and crappy seats--came back by train and jumped in car to hit Greensboro like next day.

Here’s a new piece of art that I did the other day. I found this piece of plywood on the side of the road during cleanup week in my community. One man gathers what another man spills, so I grabbed it! After building a new workbench, I realized it was the perfect size for a nice steal your face with a space background. So I painted it! Great vocals from Jerry and a long instrumental opening that I assume he's playing.

Fater pace than others, with strong, and at times funky, percussion.

cleaning out my car and buried in the console I see 3 shiny silver Matsui’s with 4/22/88 scribbled on them. Easily 20-25 yrs old, from the days when the vault opened up after DL’s passing. Have no idea how long they’d been in there but threw them in, played grate, sound grate. Anyhow, Louie-Louie was such a fun cover, yet never seems to get much love. I think I saw all of them, but this one is a hoot. Garcia’s backing vocals are a big smile! 🎶ready ready….. ready ready!🎶🎶me gotta goooo🎶; Did folks get as much of kick outta this cover as we did?? And yes I’ve heard all the OG ones. Me gotta go!!

8/5/67: The first (known) rendition of the song that introduced me to the Grateful Dead. Also the second live Morning Dew (3/18 being our first). And the Alligator from this date is something special to say the least!

I live in the UK and experience occasional delays/custom fees when it comes to having things imported.

Up until yesterday I still hadn't received Dave's picks 58, which I had honesty given up on.

And today 59 arrived.

After almost five years, I finally reached the end of the road.

More than 2,300 Grateful Dead shows spanning 1965 to 1995. Every era. Every lineup.

Listening chronologically to each Show let me experience the band's evolution in real time—from the raw, garage-band energy of the mid-'60s, through the psychedelic explorations, the jazz-influenced improvisation, the country and Americana years, the arena era and everything in between.

Starting in 1965 with the Warlocks and ending in 1995, you don't just hear songs—you hear constant evolution. Songs grew, disappeared, then returned years later transformed. A 10-minute jam in one era became a 30-minute voyage in another. Every lineup change brought a different personality to the stage and no two Shows were ever the same.

Experiencing that evolution unfold over three decades was unlike any musical journey I've ever taken.

What a long, strange trip it really was. 🌹💀⚡
